Chapter 319: Chapter 318: The Power Characteristics of the Time Dragon

“Where the hell is that Chief Dragon? If I don’t get my main meal soon, I’m going to starve to death,”

Fang Zheng complained to himself as he circled in the sky helplessly and despondently. Although he had confirmed through Prophecy Spells that there must be a Chief Dragon among those Fire Dragons, and that it was indeed within this Island Nation, he couldn’t pinpoint its exact location. The reason was simple: after merging with the bloodline of the Time Dragon, Fang Zheng found some issues with his Prophecy System magic.

Or, to put it another way, there were mutations.

Unlike other Dragon Races, the Time Dragon had a significant characteristic or, should we say, problem—that is, their connection with time was very faint.

This made the Time Dragon the only Giant Dragon among all Dragon Races that wouldn’t be killed by time; they would only continue to grow without ever succumbing to the ravages of aging and death. Since the Time Dragon itself was not bound by time, it didn’t need to be affected by time like other dragons.

That’s also why the Time Dragon needed to devour and plunder time to conduct a “Top-up Ten-Pull” for random growth. They couldn’t mature in an orderly manner because the Power of Time simply couldn’t act upon them. That is why they required such a method to make themselves “temporarily” overlap with time to achieve growth.

In turn, the sensing ability of the Time Dragon was also different from other creatures.

Ordinary creatures perceive through “body heat,” “breathing,” “scent,” “power,” and other traits to make determinations. But the sensing ability of the Time Dragon was more like a continuous, uninterrupted Prophecy Spell. They didn’t sense your arrival; rather, they perceived through the flow of time that something would appear at some place at a certain minute, a certain second. Thus, any creature that cannot escape the flow of time cannot elude the detection of the Time Dragon.

And precisely for this reason, after Fang Zheng gained the bloodline of the Time Dragon and transformed into a Time Dragon, he discovered that his Prophecy Spells became much more powerful and, conversely, harder to control.

That was not surprising. The Prophecy Spells Fang Zheng learned were intended for humans. A human’s ability to sense time and the future was naturally not as strong as that of a Time Dragon. Thus, they needed multiple safeguards and precise connections to ensure that they could glimpse into the future without being affected.

But now, these methods had become cumbersome for Fang Zheng.

To draw an analogy, if time was a massive stone, humans would want to hoist it or flip it over. They would need a lot of precision tools and use gears and conveyor belts to make sure they could lift the stone without fail and not get hurt—that’s the essence of Prophecy Spells.

But for Fang Zheng, as someone with the bloodline of the Time Dragon, he only needed to reach out his hand to flip that stone over. However, precisely because this power was too strong, Fang Zheng completely lost the ability to release Prophecy Spells as he used to. It was like an adult holding a toy gun meant for a three-year-old child, expecting to enjoy it as much as the child, which was obviously impossible.

So, in this world, besides plundering the Power of Time, the other thing Fang Zheng did was to integrate as much of the magic he learned as possible, enhancing it. Fortunately, with the hidden knowledge within the Time Dragon bloodline, he had already successfully altered some of the spells. But there were still other parts that required further research and modification for Fang Zheng.

Because of the influence of the Time Dragon bloodline, Fang Zheng’s masterful Prophecy System magic had reached the level of Seven Rings. However, he couldn’t cast Prophecy Spells normally like humans; instead, drawing on the power and knowledge within his bloodline, Fang Zheng classified his control over Prophecy Spells into two types.

Enhancement and Release.

Enhancement types of spells, simply put, were many of the internally effective spells within the Prophecy System, such as “Arcane Sight,” “True Knowledge Technique,” “High-Level Detection,” which essentially utilize magical power to “acquire” the force of time to see through and sense. But now, Fang Zheng, with his Time Dragon bloodline and time manipulation abilities from “Edge of Tomorrow,” didn’t need to hassle with Spell Text to channel Magic Power and create the effect anymore. Instead, he could directly simulate the Power of Time to produce similar spell effects.

This meant that those enhancement-class spells that used to affect the Caster themselves, which needed to be cast before release, were now constantly present within Fang Zheng; he didn’t have to recite Spell Text, all it took was a glance, a thought, and these spell effects would immediately take effect.

Unfortunately, because Fang Zheng had only just begun to improve and apply them, the effects of these spells were not very distinct yet. It’s like fine micro-engraving techniques that require practice to reach perfection. So for now, Fang Zheng was not able to utilize these “Quasi-Prophetic Spells” that he modified to carry out precise locational spells like before.

After all, Prophecy Spells for Fang Zheng used to be like a firearm, a weapon, a tool. But now, spells had become a “Superpower,” part of his very body. Familiarizing oneself with a tool and mastering one’s physical strength are two altogether different concepts.

Beyond that, there was the “Release” type of power.

“Release” referred to those spells that do not affect one’s own body but are used on others, like the “Thought Probe” and “Suppress Good Luck” that Fang Zheng used to favor. However, what Fang Zheng most hoped to study right now was the most aggressive type of spell in the Prophecy System—the “Decree” series.

The so-called Decree series were rather powerful spells within the Prophecy System; you only need to issue a single word of a Decree to your target for them to immediately be affected by it.

The Three Rings “Decree of Clumsiness,” “Decree of Weakness,” the Fifth Ring “Decree of Dispel,” the Seven Rings “Decree of Blindness,” the 8-level “Decree of Petrification,” and the Nine Rings “Decree of Death.”

Just like many other spells, Fang Zheng saw a significant flaw in the Decree system. Except for the ultimate Nine Rings spell “Decree of Death,” the rest targeted individuals only, and Fang Zheng was now researching how to transform it into an area-effect spell. Additionally, another characteristic of the Decree system was that sturdy creatures could completely resist it, meaning its spells were only good for bullying the weak. For Fang Zheng, this was somewhat a lose-lose situation. Consequently, he was also referencing effects from other spells to modify his Decree spells. Although Fang Zheng wasn’t planning to make them unstoppable, he at least hoped to make them somewhat affect targets even if they resisted the Decree effect…

Of course, this was a very challenging research task.

“Perhaps after this instance is over, I should go and consult with my mentor,” Fang Zheng mused.

Even with the knowledge gained from the “Book of All Techniques” and the Time Dragon bloodline, Fang Zheng could begin learning and researching spells on his own, but he decided to return to the Mage Tower to have a thorough discussion with Rex. After all, Rex was a powerful Prophet Mage, who might help him solve this problem.

“Hmm?”

Just then, Fang Zheng inadvertently spotted a touch of green on the ground, which made him pause in curiosity before he promptly lowered his altitude and flew downward. Since arriving here, he hadn’t seen any greenery, so the sight of this color, representative of life, piqued his interest.

Quickly, as he descended, Fang Zheng saw clearly what the green was—it was a hidden vegetable garden amidst the ruins. The lush plants and bright fruits stood out vividly against the dreary backdrop, looking like a grey waste that had been burned to ashes.

“There’s a human settlement nearby?”

Seeing the vegetable garden, Fang Zheng was somewhat surprised. He hadn’t expected people to be able to survive under so many Fire Dragons’ watchful eyes, but thinking it over, it wasn’t surprising after all—humans, well… can survive anywhere, can’t they?

“Wuu wuu…”

While Fang Zheng was circling in the air, a vehicle suddenly appeared from a distant road. It carried three or four people wrapped in shabby, dirty coats, covering their entire bodies. They drove up to the vegetable garden, and before the driver even stopped the car, the others jumped out with a sack and hurriedly rushed toward the garden.

“Are these people here to pick the fruits?”

Fang Zheng watched with a hint of confusion, noticing that the garden’s fruits were not fully ripe. Were these people so hungry that they had become undiscriminating?

The humans didn’t notice the presence of Fang Zheng and the Little Fire Dragon at all; they just quickly moved through the field, hastily picking the nearly ripe fruits. Fang Zheng watched with interest; he even considered going down to greet these humans as a local authority, perhaps they might know where the so-called Chief Dragon was?

“Beep beep beep…!!”

Just then, accompanied by the sound of an engine, another iron-clad vehicle roared towards them. A man stepped out briskly and ran toward the others, grabbing one of the men who had arrived earlier by the collar, shouting something furiously, but the other man pushed him away forcefully, not backing down.

Hmm? Something interesting seems to be happening?

Watching the two stubborn men and others who hurriedly joined them, Fang Zheng became even more curious. He had initially thought it was a robbery, but it quickly became apparent that these two groups were together, possibly divided over some issue.

“Whoosh—!”

Just as Fang Zheng was about to go down and see what was going on, he suddenly felt a rush of wind below him, and then saw a Fire Dragon rapidly approaching the field.

“Aooo—————!!”

On hearing the Fire Dragon’s roar, the two groups, almost at blows, hurriedly reacted. They turned and ran towards their cars. But with just a few beats of its wings, the Fire Dragon was upon them, and with a breath of flame, it engulfed their vehicles in a relentless inferno.

It seems these humans are in trouble again.
