Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Okay, you go ahead; I can manage on my own.”

”If the baby wakes up and I’m not back, just give her some water. The spoon and bowl are ready.”

Wei Kaiyun nodded. Although he hadn’t cared for a newborn before, he had lived with his son long enough to have some experience. Giving water to a baby wouldn’t be a problem.

Now only the three of them were left in the ward. At this moment, Wei Kaiyun’s eyes turned red with excitement as he looked at the mother and daughter lying together, and he let out a foolish smile.

In this life, having a loving wife and both a son and daughter was a happiness he had never dared to imagine.

He himself was an illegitimate child; his father was unknown, and his mother had given birth to him out of wedlock and passed away when he was five.

Back then, his mother was kicked out by the family for bearing him, and he didn’t have many impressions of her. The deepest memory was of her sighing every night, once being startled awake by her midnight sobbing.

One of the most profound memories before he turned five was never getting enough to eat. At that time, when hunger became unbearable, he would run up the mountain, but being young, what could he find to eat?

At five years old, when he returned home, he found that woman had hanged herself.

Now, that scene was etched in his heart forever.

At that point, he became a complete orphan. The village chief wouldn’t take him in, so he ended up returning to his mother’s family.

Those days were nothing worth remembering until at ten, he ran away and met his current leader, and that’s when he started receiving training.

Originally, he thought he’d be lonely all his life. Unexpectedly, heaven favored him, granting him the world’s most beautiful blessings.

Suddenly, his daughter moved a little. Wei Kaiyun hurriedly approached and saw the little one smacking her lips. Was she hungry?

Remembering he needed to give water first, he rushed to pour some, blow on it, and tasted it to ensure it wasn’t too hot before slowly picking up his daughter.

He was caught by his wife who opened her eyes to see it was him holding the baby, and then she released her grip.

Wei Kaiyun felt bittersweet; his wife hadn’t slept soundly, afraid the child might be taken away by someone else.

”Wife, rest easy. I won’t leave your side for even a moment.”

Jiang Xinyu nodded slightly. Wei Kaiyun held the baby by his side, spoon-feeding her water bit by bit.

He didn’t know how much the baby should drink, so after three spoons, he stopped, figuring a little hunger wouldn’t harm her, but too much would.

Placing the baby beside his wife, that way both should feel safe, right?

It’s past six now, and his wife should be hungry. Why hasn’t the meal arrived yet? He truly dared not step out of the ward.

After waiting about an hour, Wei Kaiyun heard footsteps, and Shi Jing also arrived.

The little boy pushed the door open and saw his dad signaling him to be silent, mimicking the gesture by placing a finger against his lips. Then he carefully walked to the bedside.

Wei Kaiyun picked him up, ”Shi Jing, this is your sister.”

Little Jiang Shijing stared at the baby lying on the bed, looking a bit surprised at his dad.

Wei Kaiyun was amused by his expression, ”What’s the matter, Shi Jing?”

”Different.” His speech was still not very clear.

”She’ll look better when she grows up, just like you.”

The little boy nodded understandingly, then reached over to his sleeping mom’s side.

Wei Kaiyun originally wanted to refuse but thought breakfast had arrived, so he let his wife wake to eat.

Shi Jing leaned closer to her and gently kissed her cheek.

Jiang Xinyu opened her eyes, bewildered, but seeing her son in front of her, she smiled.

”Shi Jing, mommy sees you.”

”Mom.”

”Hmm, Shi Jing, have you eaten?”

The little guy cheerfully nodded, ”I’m full.”

Wei Kaiyun picked up Jiang Shijing, ”Shi Jing, mom needs to eat too.”

Bai Hongying approached, initially intending to help Jiang Xinyu sit up, but Wei Kaiyun stopped her.

”I’ll do it; you take care of Shi Jing.”

Bai Hongying certainly had no objection and took Shi Jing, holding him at one side.

Wei Kaiyun supported Jiang Xinyu’s neck, slowly helping her sit up.

”Wife, how are you?”

Jiang Xinyu nodded, ”Much better; my body is fine.”

”Could you eat first, please?”

Jiang Xinyu looked a bit embarrassed at Wei Kaiyun.

”What’s wrong? What do you want?”

”I need to rinse my mouth, or I can’t eat.”

”Okay, I’ll handle it, you wait.” Wei Kaiyun helped Jiang Xinyu lean against the headboard.

At this moment, Shang Zhenkun came over, stood by the bed, and looked at the newborn baby.

Jiang Xinyu smiled and called, ”Master Shang.”

”This child will surely be a little beauty in the future.”

”Thank you for the compliment, Master Shang.”

”Xiao Jiang, you can rest assured handing Shi Jing to me; I’ll take him back.”

”Okay, thank you, Master Shang.”

Shang Zhenkun chuckled, ”Alright, we’ll leave now. Shi Jing will come to see you again at noon.”

The little boy was a bit reluctant, but when Shang Zhenkun came to carry him, he left unwillingly, yet without any fuss.

Jiang Xinyu couldn’t brush her teeth, and Wei Kaiyun first asked the doctor, who said it wouldn’t work.

He drank tasteless pig trotter soup, which somewhat nauseated him, but he knew it was necessary.

After two bowls, he couldn’t drink anymore.

”Xiao Jiang, you should feed the baby.”

”Okay, Aunt Bai, can you prepare it?”

Bai Hongying readied warm water and brought it in, placing a new towel inside.

Wei Kaiyun watched from the side, realizing he should help with the wiping.

Hurriedly, he took over, ”Let me, let me.”

Jiang Xinyu glared at him, ”You don’t know how; step aside.”

When Jiang Xinyu held the baby and let her nurse, Wei Kaiyun finally relaxed.

”You should eat, too.”

”I’m not hungry.”

”Go eat and then rest; you have the night shift. Also, go to school and ask them to excuse me. I’ve already talked to the tutor, but it’s still better to inform them again.”

After Jiang Xinyu drove Wei Kaiyun away, she had Bai Hongying help clean her body and change into autumn clothes and pants.

Wei Kaiyun came back after an hour; he was worried about his wife and daughter being there.

”Why didn’t you sleep at home?”

”There’s a bed here; I’ll stay here. When Aunt Bai goes to cook, we can’t leave the place unattended.”

Jiang Xinyu stayed in the hospital for three days, and the doctor informed them she could be discharged. But Wei Kaiyun wasn’t completely assured, bombarding them with questions before going outside to find a cart to push his wife and daughter back home.

”Wife, sorry for the inconvenience.”

”What’s the harm? I wanted to walk back myself. Didn’t the doctor say? I’m recovering very well.”

”This cart isn’t very good.”

”What’s not good about it? I find it quite nice. Our home isn’t far from here; how is it any different to take this cart?”
