Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Have a look yourself.”

Wei Kaiyun held their son while sitting on the kang, looking at the letter.

”I’ll know when I get back. I have my own people over there.”

”What’s the point of this?”

”Just some minor things, mainly about investigating spies as ordered from above.”

At this point, Jiang Xinyu stopped pressing for more details.

”Do you think what people are saying about that person is common knowledge?”

”How would I know? But there’s no need to look after Kong Mengjie anymore.”

”Yeah, that’s true. But she’s quite lucky; there’s always someone willing to make sacrifices for her.”

Hearing this, Wei Kaiyun immediately reacted. He placed their son on the kang and embraced Jiang Xinyu.

”Wife, how can you think that way?”

”What?” Jiang Xinyu looked at him like he was crazy.

”That’s not good. Everything is arranged by fate. Someone like her won’t have a good outcome. If a man makes sacrifices for a woman, he must have his own motives.

You just need me to treat you well. Don’t think about anyone else.”

With that, Jiang Xinyu finally understood what the man was getting at earlier.

”I was just talking about her. I could never do that. What were you thinking?”

”You scared me there, wife. Although I’m not omnipotent, I will absolutely put all my efforts into matters concerning you. Those are also my matters. So let’s not rely on other men.”

Jiang Xinyu looked at him like he was an idiot. ”You’re overthinking this.”

Even though Wei Kaiyun heard his wife say this, he still wasn’t at ease, wracking his brains to figure out how to explain things to her.

Little Shi Jing didn’t care about his dad’s dilemma. He tugged at his dad’s clothes but got no response, so he swiftly climbed onto his dad’s lap, babbling excitedly.

Jiang Xinyu burst into laughter. This little guy, truly a little genius.

Wei Kaiyun adjusted his son’s position to make him more comfortable.

”Wife, in your life, my role is that of an all-rounder, really.”

”Okay, okay, I know. I’m not someone who likes to depend on others either.”

”I am your support.”

Jiang Xinyu quickly nodded, eager to wrap up this topic.

She promptly picked up a letter, opened it, and found out it was from Shen Xueqi. Nothing significant, just some greetings and concerns.

”Why would Shen Xueqi write to me?” she said, shaking her head.

Wei Kaiyun quickly took it, read it, and then put it down. There was no alarm in that.

When they opened the last letter, Jiang Xinyu frowned. What is this? A lunatic?

Wei Kaiyun kept watching his wife’s expression and noticed the distinct look of disgust on her face.

He snatched the letter from her hand, and after reading it, his face significantly darkened.

”Wife, who is this Kong Demin?”

”Kong Mengjie’s second brother.”

”A soldier? Now working at the Revolutionary Committee?”

”Yes. I’m telling you, he’s not a good person. I’m especially disgusted by him.”

”What did he do?”

”Don’t ask. He didn’t do anything to me; others told me he’s no good.

Anyway, I just find him repulsive. Just thinking about him makes me uncomfortable. See, I have goosebumps.”

”Yeah, don’t pay him any attention. I want to see for myself what kind of person he is.”

”Alright, let’s burn this letter as kindling later.”

After lunch, Wei Kaiyun didn’t nap with them. ”Wife, I’m going out to make a phone call.”

”Okay.” Jiang Xinyu was feeling drowsy at that moment.

Wei Kaiyun went to the post office and made a call. ”Get a detailed report on Kong Demin, as thorough as possible.”

After giving instructions, Wei Kaiyun still felt uneasy, but there was nothing he could do about it for now.

He strolled back home and stood on the floor, looking at the mother and son sleeping soundly on the kang, and a smile appeared on his face. He lay down next to his wife, knowing she was afraid of the heat, so he gently fanned the two of them.

Jiang Xinyu’s belly was growing bigger, and the baby inside was very active. She was used to it, but Wei Kaiyun couldn’t help being startled sometimes.

”Wife, does it hurt?”

”No, it doesn’t hurt. I’m used to it.”

Wei Kaiyun lay his head on Jiang Xinyu’s belly, ”Daughter, be good. Otherwise, your mom will feel uncomfortable.

Your mom already has it hard enough. Just be obedient. In no time, you’ll be seeing this world.”

Watching him interact with the baby, Jiang Xinyu felt that this side of him was the most endearing. At least, he was the best to her and their child.

”Wife, let’s go to the hospital these days for another checkup. I’m still not at ease.”

”Alright, let’s do it when the weather gets cooler.”

”Wife, you should take this seriously.”

”Okay, okay, we’ll go for a checkup a week before school starts.”

Having a specific time made Wei Kaiyun feel more at ease. He once again assumed the role of a doting, vigilant father.

One day, someone suddenly knocked on the door, which puzzled Jiang Xinyu since her classmates who knew the place were just Zhang Baozhen and Zhang Shuping. Could they have returned from their hometown?

Wei Kaiyun came inside. ”Wife, I’m heading to the post office to take a call.”

”Alright.” So quickly they’ve found someone to help? Quite impressive. These days, working in the post office was a good job, even more preferable than being a government official or police officer.

An hour later, Wei Kaiyun returned. He lay next to his wife, thinking about Yuan Xinyun, acknowledging that this person was indeed capable.

At three o’clock, he finally woke up the mother and son, otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to sleep at night and would feel uncomfortable again.

”You two have some watermelon. I’ve had it chilled in the well all morning; it should be delicious.”

The little guy wanted to eat by himself, insisting on taking Wei Kaiyun’s spoon.

Jiang Xinyu never intervened in the affairs between father and son. She ate with her spoon, occasionally feeding Wei Kaiyun a bite.

The little guy’s hand-eye coordination was quite good. He could scoop up watermelon with the spoon and put it into his mouth, bite by bite.

”Wife, today Yuan Xinyun asked me to go to X.”

”Director Yuan? How’s he doing here now?”

”He’s okay. Currently, he’s just a workshop supervisor, but that’s already pretty good.”

”And what about Secretary Tong?”

”I don’t know.” Wei Kaiyun shook his head, wondering why he’d pay attention to other women of his own accord.

”Are you going there?”

Wei Kaiyun shook his head, ”Nothing in this world is more important than you two. I’m not going anywhere; I’d rather spend more time with you and our son.

Wife, if I go back this time and it’s inconvenient for you to bring the child home, Shi Jing probably won’t recognize me anymore then.”

Jiang Xinyu didn’t persuade him because he was absolutely right. When the child returns at four years old, it’s normal if he doesn’t remember.

Each day passed like this, and when Jiang Xinyu started feeling restless, there was only a week left before school started.

The two of them went to the hospital, and after the doctor felt her pulse, they smiled.

”The child’s health is good, sister. Don’t worry. Just come back when you reach your due date.”

”Doctor, don’t we need an ultrasound?”

”There’s no need. The pregnancy is going well!”
