Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Hmm, I haven’t met someone I truly like yet. Let’s talk about it when you’re older.”

”Dad, don’t sacrifice yourself because of us.”

”Alright, I understand. But if I do decide to find someone in the future, I’ll make sure you approve.”

Lv Beiguang really doesn’t have the mind for it right now. Given his circumstances, he won’t find anyone that’s too great, and he doesn’t want to settle either. The main concern is really the two children.

Living like this is quite good, at least his mood is better without conflicts.

He again recalls Jiang Xinyu’s smiling face. After smiling to himself, he thinks it’s best to sleep. There are plenty of good men waiting for her, himself still can’t compare.

By mid-September, Wei Kaiyun starts to struggle with sleepless nights, constantly worrying about Jiang Xinyu. He’s afraid to let her know, worried it might affect her mood.

Jiang Xinyu, however, doesn’t feel anything unusual. It’s the same as before: she and her son each have a bowl of milk in the morning. When she sees both of them drink up, Wei Kaiyun decides to speak up, albeit hesitantly, ”Xinyu, should we not go to school?”

”Why? I’m fine as it is.”

”Let’s stay at the hospital. I’ll feel more at ease.”

”No need, I’m perfectly fine, I’m not that delicate. You don’t need to worry. Even if labor starts, It won’t be done in two or three hours. There’s enough time.”

Wei Kaiyun doesn’t dare voice his concerns. Seeing his wife’s nonchalant attitude, he swallows his words of persuasion.

He accompanies his wife to school. He lingers at the school gate. The gatekeeper, seeing him like that, lets him wait in the reception room; it’s too hot outside.

”You’re a good man; it’s good to love your wife like this.”

Wei Kaiyun smiles, ”I just worry about her too much. But she doesn’t want to take time off. I can’t stay at home, so I’m here to be near her.”

His words win the old man’s approval. ”You should wait here in the future.”

”Thank you, sir.”

Gradually, they become acquainted, leading to more conversations.

”How old are you, comrade?”

”I’m thirty-one.”

”You look only around twenty-five or twenty-six.”

Wei Kaiyun smiles; since he’s not often exposed to the elements, it’s easier to look young.

”Is Ms. Jiang twenty yet?”

Listening to this, Wei Kaiyun feels troubled, age being his current preoccupation. He never thought he’d be so bothered by the age gap.

But it has become a sore point for him.

”She’s nineteen.”

”Haha, you’re quite capable, finding such an outstanding, young wife.”

Wei Kaiyun forces a smile, fearing that his wife might despise him someday.

”You’re so much older than Jiang. You definitely have to be accommodating to her.”

”Yes, I must indulge her.” This topic feels like a stab to the chest.

He quickly shifts the conversation topic, really not wanting to talk about this.

This is how Wei Kaiyun spends each day. Jiang Xinyu remains unaware. By month’s end, there’s still no sign, leaving Wei Kaiyun unable to eat.

”You don’t need to be like this, I’m fine.” Jiang Xinyu finds Wei Kaiyun’s lip blisters amusing but refrains from teasing him further; he’s genuinely anxious.

”Wife, I’m scared.”

”What’s there to fear? I’ve already given birth once, I know how it goes. Don’t be like this.”

No matter what Jiang Xinyu says, Wei Kaiyun remains tense, my mood is particularly irritable. He doesn’t dare show it, losing more weight this month.

He can’t help but imagine how Jiang Xinyu managed alone during her pregnancy with Shi Jing.

However, there’s no movement yet. When October arrives, the school organizes a gala. Wei Kaiyun shamelessly brings two stools, sitting next to his wife.

All the female students familiar with Jiang Xinyu are greatly envious of her. Half of the class is married, seeing how her husband behaves, then reflecting on their own, it’s undeniably maddening and incomparable.

Even when nearing deliveries, work is unavoidable, and household chores demand tending; husbands seem oblivious to show any concern.

They look at Wei Kaiyun’s husband; not that he must behave exactly like this, but at least show some nervousness.

With no afternoon classes, Jiang Xinyu invites Zhang Baozhen and Zhang Shuping to her home for a couple of meals.

”Xinyu, haven’t you noticed? We’ve caught ’red eye disease’ because of you?”

Jiang Xinyu pauses, glancing at Zhang Baozhen’s eyes; they don’t appear red.

”Red eye disease refers to us envying you.” Zhang Shuping laughs alongside.

Jiang Xinyu chuckles, turning to look at Wei Kaiyun following behind. ”Indeed, I’m quite fortunate.”

”You surely invite envy. During my pregnancy with my daughter, my husband still had me do his laundry. Labor started in the middle of the night, yet he couldn’t be roused.” Zhang Baozhen says bitterly.

”I wasn’t much better off. My husband was busy with work, returning home in the wee hours. When I gave birth to my daughter, he didn’t even come home.”

”Haha, no need to envy me. He got a year’s vacation; being together all the time makes him nervous.”

”That’s different, it being a nervous display reflects his feelings.”

Because it was unannounced, the meal was insufficient, so Bai Hongying quickly makes pancakes.

After lunch, neither returns to school but enjoys a satisfying nap. After a lavish dinner, they finally leave.

”Shuping, isn’t Jiang Xinyu’s husband someone special?” They chat while walking.

Zhang Shuping shakes her head, ”I’m not entirely sure, only heard he was a factory director. Due to some issues, he was assigned to my husband’s forestry site. But he was later exonerated, likely staying for his wife. Probably, after the baby is born, they’ll leave.”

”Such a young factory director?”

”He’s thirty-one.”

”Certainly looks young. Seems only seven or eight years older than Xinyu, surprised to learn it’s a full cycle gap.”

”Indeed, the first impression of him was unlike how he is now, being pampered brought a change.”

”Well, no wonder he treats Xinyu so well; there’s quite an age difference. Why would Xinyu, such a fine lady, choose an older man?”

Zhang Shuping shakes her head, ”Never discussed this topic.”

”Could he have deceived Xinyu?”

”Maybe, else why would such an excellent young lady marry someone so old? Xinyu doesn’t come off as someone who seeks luxury.”

”Who knows? As long as they’re happy together, that’s what matters.”

”Yes, as long as they’re happy, outside opinions don’t matter.”

They return to school, but their minds linger on the couple. Zhang Shuping speculates about Jiang Xinyu possibly for Wei Kaiyun’s status, though there’s no fault in that. Just that Wei Kaiyun being quite older makes her wonder about a prior spouse or children.

Seeing Jiang Xinyu’s conduct, she shouldn’t be a homewrecker.
