Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 589: Chapter 589: Bold Conjecture

With the pass provided by Qian Xialan, Yang Yu no longer had to worry about the human scent on his body while passing through checkpoints, saving quite a bit of time.

During the day, Yang Yu and Lotcar traveled continuously, and at night, Yang Yu would engage in battles with subhuman adventurers staying in towns to accumulate experience.

Of course, Yang Yu wasn’t foolish enough to make enemies everywhere.

Instead, like before, he issued tasks so others would willingly challenge him. For efficiency, he faced Level B and above adventurers in single combat, while Level C and D adventurers were encouraged to team up against him.

Lotcar, transformed into a Beastman, also used the same method to gain experience, reaping a large amount of it.

Seeing his experience rapidly increasing, Yang Yu was extremely pleased; even if the challengers lost, Yang Yu was willing to pay out of his pocket to treat them to a drink.

Seeing this, many less powerful adventurers also came to join in, eager for a good meal.

Apart from a few truly seeking to become stronger or strike it rich overnight, many were forced into becoming adventurers, maintaining their livelihood by solving problems for others.

If one could drink wine, sing songs, and lie in bed with a girl, who would choose to lead a life fraught with danger and constant turmoil?

The adventurers who could stand brightly in the spotlight were just a small fraction of the many, possessing exceptional talent and stable legacies, unlike many who turned to adventuring halfway through their lives.

The structure of adventurers was like a pyramid, with over 90% of the wealth monopolized by the top 1% of adventurers.

Most adventurers were stuck at the bottom, seldom achieving anything higher in their lifetime.

Due to the escalating war between Wansheng Country and Luoze Empire, many adventurers trapped at the bottom saw a chance to turn their lives around; many of them switched to becoming soldiers.

But someone always had to deal with the demons that harassed the villages; disliking being controlled, they continued to stay and work as adventurers.

With fewer adventurers around, the Experience Value Yang Yu had hoped for was halved.

Now, each level up granted Yang Yu significantly more attributes, but the experience needed to level up also greatly increased.

During the journey from Baihua City to Life Forest, Yang Yu was only able to increase his level by three.

By the way, while staying at the adventurer’s guild, Yang Yu had also upgraded his Level D adventurer badge to a Level A, allowing him to take on higher difficulty tasks.

The badge upgrade process was quite simple.

After confirming through the Crystal Ball’s ability assessment that he had the qualifications of a Level A adventurer, or after completing a set number of designated difficulty tasks, one could pay ten thousand Gold Coins to challenge a mentor within the guild. Victory meant the successful upgrade of the badge.

“Who would have thought, the adventurer’s guild, this organization, actually has the support of giant dragons behind it. No wonder whenever I visit different adventurer’s guilds, apart from finding the interior decorations slightly different, the internal style is too similar.”

Sitting atop Lotcar, Yang Yu mused to himself as he tossed up his newly acquired Level A adventurer badge, initially thinking that the adventurer’s guilds across different countries were not interconnected, hence, he never updated his adventurer Level.

It turns out, the adventurer’s guilds rely on the support of giant dragons to flourish ubiquitously across the continent, aiding people in resisting various bizarre demons.

With this in mind, it makes sense for the Dragon God Evaluation Country to request that the All Things Library assists in publishing a periodical for Level S adventurers.

As for the reason giant dragons cultivate adventurers…

In many stories, dragons are known to love treasures.

Utilizing adventurers to collect various treasures doesn’t seem far-fetched.

I wonder if here, the dragons will follow that common trope…

No.

Yang Yu quickly dismissed his thought; aside from anything else, the fact that dragons were also considered subhuman was peculiar.

According to the information Yang Yu had previously gathered, the differentiation among various subhumans depended on whether they could produce mixed species offspring, not on form differences.

According to Yang Yu’s knowledge, in their world, the subhumans that were most similar to those of this world were various breeds of domestic dogs.

Many breeds of dogs have significant differences in appearance, such as the Tibetan Mastiff and the Teddy, but they can still produce viable offspring, who largely possess characteristics from both parents.

After all, in terms of kinship, all domestic dogs belong to the genus Canis and are a subspecies of the gray wolf.

Based on this reasoning, could the subhumans of this world also belong to one genus?

Subhumans, subhumans, a subspecies of humans… Is that why they are called subhumans?

Yang Yu felt like he had stumbled upon a tremendous secret, but without concrete evidence, he dared not jump to conclusions.

After all, this is a world of magic; perhaps the creator hadn’t intended this connection, and he was reading too much into it.

Or perhaps, there was no over-interpretation at all.

Yang Yu recalled the painting on the last door of the Goblin Maze, where every evolutionary branch was covered in a faint light, as if they had received some kind of blessing.

Nevertheless, to completely unravel the mysteries of this world, one had to proceed step by step and verify cautiously.

“Lotcar, we have arrived in the Life Forest, and your village is not far from here. Would you like to go back and see it?”

Faced with Yang Yu’s sudden question, Lotcar slowed his pace, slightly lifted his head, pondered for a moment, and then replied,

“No need for now, it’s not time to go back yet. Going back now would only slow down the restoration of order.

Yang Yu, don’t worry about me; if you have something you want to investigate, just tell me directly. If you’re just worried, thank you.”

“If you don’t want to go back, that’s okay. We can investigate later on the way to the Plant Clan…”

As Yang Yu was still speaking, suddenly, it seemed as though something had entangled around Lotcar’s feet, rendering him immobile.

“Yang Yu.”

“I know!”

Checking Lotcar’s status on the panel, Yang Yu took out his shield and looked around but saw no one; it was eerily silent, and he could even hear the sound of leaves falling from the trees.

Releasing the [Binding Demon Curse] and having ascended to level seventy-six, Lotcar, with his strength of over seven hundred, still couldn’t move a step, his body tightly fixed in place.

Yang Yu wasn’t affected by the status, but he didn’t know if he would be bound like Lotcar if he jumped down from Lotcar’s back.

Looking around again, Yang Yu still couldn’t find anyone, and Lotcar tried to catch any scent in the air but still couldn’t detect anything suspicious.
