Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

Chapter 572: Chapter 572: What are you doing here?

Yang Yu could think of only a few possible scenarios.

The most likely was that the King needed a large number of valuable items to reward the generals who had performed exceptionally well in the war, and since there weren’t many high-level adventurers in Wansheng Country, that was why they treated adventurers in such a way, hoping they would bring back more symbolic prizes.

Compared to ordinary monetary rewards, tangible items were better able to represent the King’s esteem and affection for his generals.

Of course, all of this was just Yang Yu’s speculation. To know for certain, he would have to wait until they were in town and inquire around.

Following the carriage, as they passed through checkpoints, two beastmen couldn’t help but gaze at the huge Lotcar and Yang Yu sitting atop him. They put down their spears and stopped them:

”Please wait a moment, gentlemen. We have some questions and would like you to answer truthfully.”

Yang Yu remained calm and composed, showing no signs of deceit, ”What is it?”

”We would like to know your identities. You two don’t seem simple, and I want to know what you are doing in Baihua City.”

The soldiers guarding the checkpoint scrutinized Yang Yu and Lotcar with great interest; such a duo was indeed very rare.

Lot turned his head, his huge eyeballs whirring around as he spoke, ”I am Husky of the Silver Teeth Clan, here on the orders of our leader for military enlistment.

The one on my back is Mr. Potato Thorn, a member of the Plant Clan. He has some matters he wishes to communicate on behalf of the Plant Clan’s Council to the King of this country. Additionally...”

”Additionally, I’ve brought a handwritten letter from the Elf Queen and would like to have a private discussion with Prime Minister Ming Dalak of this country. We simply encountered each other on the way and decided to travel to this place together.”

Considering they had to remain active on the battlefield, Yang Yu and the others naturally couldn’t use their real names. Besides himself and Lotcar, Yang Yu had also given new names to Bai Jin and Iyas during the journey to disguise their identities—Bai Jin was now called Mu Jin Flower, and Iyas was Little Huang.

”If you truly are Mr. Potato of the Plant Clan and Mr. Husky of the Silver Teeth Clan, we shall certainly welcome you,” said the somewhat skeptical soldier. ”However, given your special identities, please allow me to report this inside. Please bear with us and wait here for a little while.”

”Alright. Please report as soon as possible.”

Yang Yu agreed to the soldier’s request to avoid suspicion.

Being escorted by soldiers, it was less likely for anyone feeling curious to come over for a chat; they were more likely to just look at them with strange gazes, which was much less troublesome.

Jumping down from Lotcar’s back, Yang Yu waited attentively at the city gate.

However, due to Lotcar’s enormous wolf form and Yang Yu’s distinctive hairstyle, they still managed to attract many passersby’s attention.

It was at that moment that a fox swordsman with two tails came out from the Baihua City side. She too was instantly captivated by the appearance of Yang Yu and his company.

She had intended to lead her team past the city gate toward the Underground Maze while casting curious glances at the odd pair.

But a scent that seemed familiar infiltrated the nose of the fox beastman. She stopped in her tracks, lifted her nose, and sniffed the air.

Searching through her memory for the same scent, the fox beastman continued to sniff around while gradually stepping closer to Yang Yu, unimpeded by her companions.

”Miss, is there a peculiar smell on me?”

Yang Yu furrowed his brows, knowing exactly who this person was—the fox beastman Xin Mang Madeline, who had watched from atop a roof last time as they had forcefully passed through that entrapment village.

She was the Fox Swordsman who had instigated the war between the two nations.

”Come with me,”

Looking at Yang Yu’s profile, Xin Mang Madeline’s eyes were filled with complexity. With a ”snap,” she grabbed Yang Yu’s wrist, but she didn’t notice the thorns on his hand and was pricked, wincing in pain, half-crouching and biting her teeth to suppress a cry.

”Miss, are you alright?”

Yang Yu asked with concern. He hadn’t anticipated that Xin Mang Madeline would suddenly grab at the thorns on his body.

”It’s nothing... Now is not the time to talk about this.” Xin Mang Madeline clenched her teeth, stood up, and carefully grabbed Yang Yu’s wrist with her other hand, pulling him away from the crowd.

Blowing on her wound until the pain subsided a bit, Xin Mang Madeline leaned close to Yang Yu’s ear and whispered,

”You’re human, aren’t you?

You, as a human, shouldn’t be here. I don’t know what your purpose is, but you definitely must not appear in Baihua City.

If your identity were exposed, you would be executed.”

Having said that, Xin Mang Madeline looked at Yang Yu seriously, hoping he would leave the Subhuman kingdom before things became irreparable, to go as far as he could.

Yang Yu, in turn, whispered in Xin Mang Madeline’s ear,

”I appreciate your concern, Miss Xin Mang Madeline. You’re truly fair-minded, just as you were when you broke the sculpture to save two human children.

However, please rest assured, Miss Xin Mang Madeline. We are here on serious business to report to the Queen and the Prime Minister of this country. If your conscience is clear, you have nothing to fear.

I assure you, we hold no ill will towards any Subhuman; as long as no one interferes with us, we will not trouble them in return.

It was just like our first visit to Wansheng Country, Miss Xin Mang Madeline, you saw it too, right?

If they had not troubled us then, we would not have taken action. After the altercation, we did not harm anyone.”

Hearing Yang Yu’s words, Xin Mang Madeline’s eyes widened in surprise. She had been so cautious, yet Yang Yu had still noticed her.

”Indeed, I understand. It seems no matter what, you won’t change your mind. Your presence here means you must be quite capable, but I still have to warn you, be extremely careful. With that... I must take my leave.”

With those words, Xin Mang Madeline hurried back to her adventure party.

Seeing their leader’s earlier demeanor, her team members teased her, mistakenly thinking Yang Yu was an old flame of Xin Mang Madeline, hence her agitation.

Xin Mang Madeline wanted to explain, and after thinking for a moment, she said that she and Yang Yu were old playmates who had not seen each other for years, managing to deflect their suspicions.

”Being exposed right from the start is really an ill omen.”

Keeping his thoughts off his face, Yang Yu casually returned to Lotcar’s side to continue waiting.

In the meantime, Xin Mang Madeline stole a few more glances at Yang Yu, signaling him with her eyes to hurry up with his business and leave, then followed her team as they temporarily stationed themselves near Yang Yu.
