I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 1236: Chapter 425: Three Crows of the Rooster, Beyond the Law (8k)

Fan Zeyun’s tone carried a sense of resentment, a hint of sarcasm, and a touch of disbelief.

Wen Yan picked up on it; back then, Fan Zeyun wanted him to get caught, then tear the sky apart.

Previously, when Wen Yan was going through the files, he saw a separate case about a revengeful Fierce Ghost, and in one corner of a document photo, an emblem that belonged to Fan Zeyun was visible.

On top of that, in the first Ghost Market massacre, there were actually survivors, and those survivors were mostly victims.

He guessed, this most probably wasn’t an accidental event.

When the blackened Fierce Ghost lost its mind and went on a killing spree, there were still clear signs of target selection, which evidently showed rationality.

Back then, no one paid attention to what was just considered a lantern used as a signal marker; in fact, it acted as the biggest catalyst.

That lantern itself was just a sign for passing information; replacing it with an ordinary light would essentially have the same effect.

This also gave Fan Zeyun a good opportunity to act.

He probably didn’t need to do anything actively; he could have just found a child, had them break the lantern, and people in the Ghost Market would have just replaced it with another lantern.

In the Scorching Sun Department’s data, it merely mentioned that the lantern was a signal; as for the lantern’s existence, no one cared at all.

Back then, an insane, blackened Fierce Ghost was beyond the timelines of the Spiritual Qi Resurgence progression; no one could hope to recognize an undocumented lantern.

The inside story of those years, just by looking at the records, can’t really be understood; some details should have been omitted. Wen Yan could feel, seeing the records, that back then, the skills, personnel, and authority were far lesser than today’s Scorching Sun Department. They were quite unwilling to compromise, and in the end, it’s unknown what happened that led to the final outcome.

Wen Yan couldn’t manage affairs from decades ago, nor did he understand them, but the current matters were linked to him.

Wen Yan opened his phone, flipped to the generated lantern image from the Black Box, which most resembled the one he saw during Soul Summoning in the Nether Path.

“Have you ever made a lantern similar to this?”

“I did, the Soul-Suppressing Lantern, but this one wasn’t made by me, and the design doesn’t match.”

“This design is just a computer-generated schematic, mind if I ask whose hands the lantern ended up in?”

“I only know who had it initially; who ultimately had it, I am unclear.”

Saying this, Fan Zeyun wore a complex expression, paused slightly, then added.

“This time, the risky journey with my physical body into the nether was because I had a premonition, sensing that old Soul-Suppressing Lantern seemed to appear on the Nether Path.

I thought some audacious person had taken the Soul-Suppressing Lantern into the nether and got lost there, leaving the lantern behind on the Nether Path.

Unexpectedly, after going down, I couldn’t sense it anymore.”

As Fan Zeyun spoke, he saw the curtain pulled open by a big rooster, which strutted in with its head held high, tilting its head to look at the two inside, and when it spoke, it had a strong old Guanzhong accent.

“This fool is planning to die inside there.”

Seeing the big rooster enter, Fan Zeyun, who had been calm all along, immediately panicked, trying to grab the rooster, but didn’t get a chance to cover its beak.

The rooster flapped its wings, perched on the kang, kept tilting its head, looking at people with one eye, and glared at Fan Zeyun.

“This fool sticking up his butt, I just knew what he’s up to, isn’t it just finding that lantern, then resolutely destroying it, along with the lantern bearer and himself, dying on the Nether Path once and for all.”

Wen Yan looked at the big rooster; it seemed robust, with bright feathers, which would have made excellent shuttlecock materials in the past, guaranteed to be plucked every few days.

Just now, Wen Yan had noticed, but didn’t pay much attention; he’s seen many demons. Those without bloodthirst or malice he would just regard as ordinary passersby.

“Brother Dao, I’m begging you, please stop talking.” Fan Zeyun tried to cover the rooster’s beak but couldn’t catch it; he could only turn to Wen Yan, sounding slightly pleading.

“The past has nothing to do with Brother Dao; don’t drag him into this.”

“Saying you’re a fool, and you truly are a fool; someone’s already come knocking, do you think I could still hide it? Eating all that salt for nothing.” The big rooster tilted its head, looked at the people with one eye, filled with a sarcastic tone.

Wen Yan chuckled; the rooster’s words sounded familiar. He heard such words countless times as a child; the old ladies at the orphanage couldn’t speak Mandarin; they were authentic old Guanzhong folks.

Wen Yan seamlessly switched to the local dialect, waved a hand at the rooster.

“Take it easy, I’m not here to make an arrest; he passed by my doorstep, just happened to have other questions to ask him.

I’m Wen Yan; how should I address you, Sir?”

The big rooster held its head high, speaking in a formal manner.

“My surname is Huang, name Dao. If you’re nice, call me Brother Dao; if not, Taoist Master would do.”

“Ha…” Wen Yan laughed out loud, what kind of logic is this?

“Brother Dao, do you know any other fairies?”

“Why? Trying to get more info?”

“Just asking casually, it happens that I also know quite a few other demons.”

“Ew, who would you know, isn’t it some smelly fox?”

“…”

Wen Yan was speechless; this rooster must have some grudge against the fox.

Come to think of it, it made sense; in the place where Granny Fox and they were, local free-range chicken farms sprang up around them heavily. To have a good relationship with a rooster that had such a sarcastic tone in its speech, now that would be a real oddity.
