I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 1231: Chapter 423: Requesting Authority, Archived Case (5k)_3

“Besides, it’s just a few ghosts, not important characters. If you think about it, if these ghosts get involved with someone or some force, and someone dares to be reckless enough to let these ghosts die in the Scorching Sun Department, wouldn’t that be a bigger fish than these ghosts?”

Old Li thought about it; this made sense. Either way, don’t intervene, don’t put pressure, and maybe we’ll catch a big fish.

After persuading Old Li, once he calmed down, Wen Yan told him to go back and catch up on sleep. There’s no need to attend the meeting this morning, as there aren’t any important topics today.

Wen Yan also took it easy, finding a place to review the materials.

He had the Black Box categorize the materials, starting with the parts he previously lacked the authority to access.

Once he looked, wow, no wonder it required such high authorization. The guy who originally ran the Ghost Market was from the Capital City, connected with a rich background. Many Ghost Market clients were either wealthy or high-ranking, especially many second-generation individuals eager to make a name for themselves.

At that time, the Spiritual Qi Resurgence had been happening for decades, just with very slow progress. Even the most intelligent demons were unable to transform or shift forms, remaining in their animal shapes.

But during this period, when the Ghost Market opened, it attracted true ghosts, and not just one.

This led to a tragedy, where many people died, and a lot of unspeakable, unreportable dirty deeds within the Ghost Market were exposed.

At the time, the case was handled by Cai Heizi before he became a branch minister, with the General Director overseeing.

Dozens of people died all at once, and those involved had either power or money, or their families did.

Such a big case should have blown up, given the evidence left at the scene and the still-alive witnesses. The ones who died, if caught while alive, would face at least ten years imprisonment, with at least a third likely ending in the death penalty without needing a trial.

Back then, the Spiritual Qi Resurgence was slow, and the Scorching Sun Department’s authority was far less than it is now.

Cai Heizi faced extreme pressure during his lead on the case, and even the General Director faced pressure from various sides.

Eventually, it turned out the ghosts genuinely believed it was a true Ghost Market, so they entered. One ghost discovered close friends inside, appearing as goods, and the ghost then turned dark leading to a major conflict and tragic outcome.

As a result, the matter was sealed, and the dead had to accept their fate, as the evidence and files related to their crimes were all sealed.

Wen Yan merely glanced at the documented words and breakthroughs, frowning involuntarily.

He noticed among the dead were some whose parents and backing individuals have either retired or been arrested over the years.

Wen Yan believed this was why the General Director let him view these materials.

Otherwise, looking at these documents could be risky.

These individuals were far more formidable than ghosts.

Examining further, many survived the Ghost Market incidents, indicating that the ghosts had clear objectives, not just mindlessly killing.

Flipping through, Wen Yan found a photograph.

The photo depicted the entrance to the Ghost Market, with a dimly lit lantern hanging, casting a unique atmosphere under the incandescent glow.

The upper part of the image showed the back of the Ghost Market, black energy swirling like massive flames burning.

This was part of the section he previously couldn’t access, representing that during the time despite the slow progress, some ghosts under extreme circumstances could unleash powers surpassing limits.

This situation undoubtedly caused panic back then.

With a clearer photo, Wen Yan instructed the Black Box to keep searching with the existing materials.

This time took a while, more than ten minutes later, the Black Box provided Wen Yan another photograph.

From another case, the Black Box enlarged and enhanced a minor corner of the photo.

The image’s background had a pattern identical to the lantern’s pattern at the Ghost Market entrance.

“This is the most relevant clue I found.

The pattern is written out, according to handwriting analysis and steadfastness evaluation.

There’s an 85% likelihood these two patterns were drawn by the same person.

The location in the picture has been sent, please check.”

Wen Yan looked at the location in the image, surprisingly it was somewhere in Guanzhong County, close to The Town of Lanterns.

“What’s the case in this image?”

Black Box immediately sent the data.

The data showed it was a typical case of a ghost seeking revenge.

A murderer from thirty years ago buried the corpse in their garden, and as Spiritual Qi Resurgence progressed, the victim’s unresolved resentment kept accumulating.

Eventually, gaining enough strength to burst through the soil, in rage, it shredded and devoured the murderer’s soul, and then the ghost lost its sanity, being dispersed by the arriving forces.

Wen Yan compared with the earlier case…

Hmm, there seemed to be similarities.

Wen Yan pondered, put away his phone, and turned to leave, skipping out on today’s unimportant meeting.

Through the Nether Path, he arrived at Guanzhong County, near the place from the materials, quickly locating the spot from the photo.

And simultaneously, within the Nether Path.

An elder, hair and beard snow-white, holding a white paper lantern in one hand and grasping three incense sticks in the other, walked through the Nether Path.

As he approached the Big Intersection, gazing ahead, he looked astonished.

The intersection had widened and expanded with a new crossroad, flanked by two Soul Lamp statues, and street lights illuminating the path.

Then the elder looked up, noticed the street lights equipped with cameras, causing his composure to falter.
