I Am Your Natural Enemy

And then I found out they were actually worshipping a real Ghost Wealth God, treating him like a Floating Immortal and serving him like a god.

I ran out from the Northeast, partly because I wanted to come to Guanzhong County and make my way here.

The other reason was, after I heard the Scorching Sun Department had busted some small temples of the Ghost Wealth God, I figured that boat of theirs was probably a pirate ship, so I bailed first.

On the road in between, every place I passed through, I went to the local Scorching Sun Department to file my information.

I was just afraid they’d think I knew a bit too much and decide to take care of me.”

When Wen Yan heard this, he was slightly stunned. So this was the real reason Fu Fu filed his information everywhere he went, obeying the rules to an extreme?

Right, no wonder he managed to travel this far and arrive here safely.

Along the way he’d even rendered merit, and he himself was especially distinctive, always taking the main roads. Under these circumstances, whoever dared to ”take care of” Fu Fu would definitely get caught by the Scorching Sun Department’s little handle.

According to the documents Wen Yan had read, strange fires had been increasing recently.

Guanzhong County’s Scorching Sun Department was actually planning to recruit Ghosts like Fu Fu, to use them as special firefighters.

”Do you know where that place is?”

”I do. It’s actually pretty well‑known there, it’s just that the temple isn’t primarily dedicated to the God of Wealth—his statue is in a hall at the back.”

”Which God of Wealth do they worship?”

”Since there’s a temple openly on the surface, which God of Wealth do they worship?”

”Don’t know, but it definitely isn’t the one on the surface.”

”Do you know who’s involved in this?”

”I do.” Fu Fu quickly rattled off a few names.

One of them was that guy Wen Yan had run into during the meeting. Wen Yan took out his phone, noted down the name, and fed it straight into the Black Box. The Black Box immediately displayed some public information for him.

They were all people from the local Shaman Sect, and among these few, some weren’t even from the same branch hall.

But then, the Black Box pulled up their recent movements, and Wen Yan’s gaze was instantly drawn to one particular entry.

One of them had already gone south to Nanyang, supposedly answering some hype from over there, going to get involved in matters related to the Tree of Immortality.

Wen Yan put away his phone and looked at Fu Fu.

”You just stay here with peace of mind. Don’t worry. But for your own safety, it’s best not to let anyone know you’ve met me.

After this, I’ll ask Lord Zhu to recommend you to the Scorching Sun Department. You warned of a fire beforehand.

And as far as I know, the Scorching Sun Department is indeed planning to set up special fire‑alarm arrangements. Ghosts with corresponding talents have quotas.

Your ability definitely isn’t a problem, and Lord Zhu recommending you is more than enough.

This is also very safe. Lord Zhu is enthusiastic by nature; he’s already recommended other Ghosts many times. No one will think there’s anything off about it.”

At this point, Wen Yan turned his head to look at Lord Zhu.

”Prince, I’ll be counting on you for this one.”

”A trivial matter. Once it’s daylight I’ll go take care of it.”

Fu Fu hurriedly stood up to thank him. He had no particular demands regarding the job itself, but as a Ghost, if he could get a position with the Scorching Sun Department, that would definitely give him status. Besides, he really was good at this kind of work now.

After settling Fu Fu to stay here under Lord Zhu’s roof, Wen Yan continued sitting with Lord Zhu and chatting.

”You trust this guy that easily?” Lord Zhu poured Wen Yan a cup of tea and asked with a smile.

”The look in his eyes is exactly the same as mine before I got into the Funeral Home.

What he wants isn’t to become powerful; he just wants a sense of security, a stable job.

Especially now that he’s a Ghost, what he needs even more is that sense of security, not some kind of strength.

If I’ve misjudged him this time, then I’ll accept it.”

Lord Zhu smiled and raised his teacup.

”A toast to you.”

Wen Yan might have said that, but Lord Zhu’s words still served as a reminder to him.

He looked over the information. He didn’t want to think of people as that bad, their thoughts so deep and scheming, but he could afford to think of other people as a bit worse.

For example, those sect people had found Fu Fu right after his death, right after he became a Ghost—was there any hidden story behind that?

Honestly, Wen Yan kept feeling that a Three Death Gentle Breeze was way too lucky.

Especially for someone who secretly worshipped a Ghost Wealth God—then Wen Yan couldn’t be blamed for thinking in terms of conspiracy.

Is there a chance that what happened to Fu Fu wasn’t purely an accident at all?

After chatting with Lord Zhu for a bit, Wen Yan prepared to take the Nether Path to the Capital City overnight—he still had to slack off at the meeting tomorrow.

He had the Black Box look up the fire in which Fu Fu died.

Checking it, the fire had almost instantly erupted at the time, and then the flames grew so fierce they were hard to extinguish in time.

Aside from Fu Fu, there had been two other people, also victims.

The case hadn’t landed in the hands of the Scorching Sun Department; it was treated as an ordinary case. The cause was a battery catching fire, so the flames spread fast and were hard to put out; by the time the fire trucks arrived, the people were already dead.

The records were very complete; just looking at the file, there was nothing wrong.

But Wen Yan thought about how more and more fires lately were becoming strange, and he had the Black Box pull the information on the other two.

Once on the Nether Path, as he passed a crossroads, Wen Yan tried a Soul Summoning again.

For the first person, the Golden Light Avenue flew out, but when it returned, it was empty.

Wen Yan paused slightly. Again? He couldn’t summon either of two people who’d died in ordinary accidents?

He tried the second one. The Golden Light Avenue flew out, and Wen Yan again felt an enormous resistance.

When he looked along the Golden Light Avenue, that dim yellow radiance was shining up ahead, like a lantern with weak light, shadowy and indistinct, blocking the path.

Under that faint glow, countless Ghosts, guided by the dim light, surged up onto the Golden Light Avenue and rushed rapidly toward Wen Yan’s side.

Wen Yan’s expression chilled as he watched the massive surge of Lost Souls appear, simply observing in silence.

Those Lost Souls followed the Golden Light Avenue rushing over, and immediately realized that this seemed to be the Nether Path.

They wanted to turn back, but it was already too late.

Hundreds of Lost Souls fell into the Nether Path. In their panic, with just a single turn, they were completely lost here.

Wen Yan flicked his arm; Gray Cloth flew out, swiftly snaring several Ghosts who clearly still had Spiritual Intelligence, grabbing all of them.

As for the remaining Lost Souls, once they charged into the Nether Path and lost themselves here, they could only walk forward forever, never able to leave again.

Wen Yan looked along the Golden Light Avenue. That lantern of dim radiance was still floating there, blocking the way at a vast distance; even the Golden Light Avenue couldn’t drag it over.

Wen Yan dispersed the Golden Light Avenue and let out a cold laugh.

Heh, within a single day, every Soul Summoning has failed.

Especially those last two times—it was obvious someone was blocking things, preventing any Soul Summoning.
