Medical Sage

As Chen Fei was leisurely riding the high-speed train back to Northern Mountain City, the political sphere in Tongzhou City had already stirred up quite a storm.

Liu Tianping, the Deputy Director of the Tongzhou City Finance Bureau and a man with high hopes of succeeding the retiring Deputy Director Zhang, was suddenly escorted from his office by personnel from the Discipline Inspection Commission and the Public Security Bureau. He wasn’t the only one. A high-ranking division-level leader from the Municipal Gardening Bureau, known to be a close associate of Liu’s, received the same treatment. Both were considered influential figures in Tongzhou’s political landscape. Adding to the intrigue were rumors that Liu Tianping had backing from the provincial level, yet he was arrested all the same. The event naturally led to wild speculation.

However, the truth was far less complex than anyone imagined. It was simply a case of certain people doing things they shouldn’t have and running afoul of someone with an overdeveloped sense of justice. They got what they deserved.

Meanwhile, the blissfully unaware Chen Fei had arrived at the Northern Mountain City High-Speed Railway Station, back on his home turf.

”Ah, Northern Mountain really is the best. Even the air feels fresher,” Chen Fei murmured with a contented, slightly exaggerated sigh, stretching his arms as he followed the crowd out of the station.

He failed to notice a dark figure lurking on a tall building hundreds of meters away. The figure held an absurdly large sniper rifle, a cruel grin playing on his lips. ”So, you’ve arrived, have you? Time to get ready.” He then leaned forward slightly.

Another lovely life, about to be extinguished by my hand. What a wonderful feeling.

He settled his body into a prone position, his finger resting on the trigger of the loaded rifle. Squinting through the scope, his cold gaze locked onto Chen Fei, his lips twisted in a sadistic smirk.

PFFT!

A muffled sound broke the air as a specially crafted black bullet shot from the dark barrel, leaving a trail of smoke. The projectile was enveloped in a terrifying, crackling aura of light-attribute energy that tore through the atmosphere.

First, I’ll grab a cab to the hotel and get my car… Chen Fei thought, heading for the taxi stand.

But just then, in a flash!

Without warning, the hairs on his body stood on end, and his skin crawled with goosebumps. An unfamiliar sense of danger seized his heart.

It was a feeling he had never experienced before. It was the scent of death.

He instinctively wrenched his body to the side as a faint red glow materialized over the vital area of his neck, covering it like a shield.

BANG!

SHHIIINK!

But he was a fraction of a second too slow. The horrifying danger—the bullet—grazed savagely past the carotid artery in his neck. Wild, crackling light-attribute energy wreaked havoc, sending sparks flying. For a moment, it felt as if a chunk of his neck had been torn open as scalding blood sprayed into the air.

Fuck, someone’s trying to kill me!?

Chen Fei’s expression turned grim, his face a mask of shock and anger. It felt as if he had been dragged back from the gates of hell. His heart hammered against his ribs, and his breathing became heavy and ragged. He never imagined something like this could happen—an assassination attempt from a distance, and the assailant was clearly no ordinary killer.

He could feel the presence of supernatural power in the attack.

It was nowhere near the terrifying SS-level power of Old Benson, whom he had faced before. In a face-to-face fight, he wouldn’t have given an opponent of this caliber a second thought. But this was different. The bullet had been aimed at his neck, one of his most vulnerable spots. If he hadn’t caught a hint of the danger beforehand, and if the combined power of the sniper rifle and the ability had been just a little bit stronger...

He would be in serious trouble, perhaps unable to even stand. After all, if your neck was torn open and your carotid artery severed, anyone would be left lying helpless on the ground.

”Wah, wah! Wah, wah, wah…”

Suddenly, Chen Fei heard a baby crying behind him. He spun around instinctively, his pupils contracting at the sight.

A woman was lying in a pool of blood just behind him.

”Murder! Someone’s been killed!”

”Quick, run! There’s a killer!”

The surrounding crowd finally snapped to their senses, realizing the horror of what had just transpired. Screams erupted as panic set in, and the scene descended into chaos. This was the Northern Mountain City High-Speed Railway Station, a crowded public space, and a shooting had just occurred. The victim’s condition was unknown. How could they not be terrified?

”FUCK!” Chen Fei roared, ignoring the ghastly wound on his own neck. His face dark with fury, he pushed through the panicked crowd and rushed to the woman’s side. ”Aunty, Aunty, are you okay? Hold on! You have to hold on! I’m a doctor, I can save you!” He had never felt so angry, so frantic.

It was painfully obvious that the woman was an innocent bystander caught in an attack meant for him. The thought filled him with a profound sense of unease.

Damn it all. If I find out who did this, I don’t care if you’re the Heavenly King Laozi himself—I’ll make you pay! he seethed internally.

”Young man… hiss… your neck! Are you… are you alright?”

Finally, a few people managed to overcome their fear and cautiously approach the bleeding woman. They couldn’t just stand by and watch a person die. As they got closer, however, their eyes fell on Chen Fei, and their faces paled. His neck was drenched in blood, the wound so gruesome that flaps of flesh were visible. Just looking at it made their scalps tingle, let alone seeing the heavily injured man standing right there as if nothing was wrong.

An older woman stepped forward, her voice filled with concern. ”Young man, are you okay? That neck of yours… why don’t you lie down? I’ll put my coat on the ground for you. The ambulance should be here soon.”

”That’s right, son. That injury looks terrifying. You shouldn’t be moving around.”

”Aunty, let me. Buddy, are you feeling dizzy? You can lean on me for a bit. I’m big enough to hold you up.”

The small crowd began to chime in with words of support. A young man who looked like a college student even rushed to Chen Fei’s side, offering his shoulder to lean on.

”Thank you, everyone. I’m fine, really,” Chen Fei said, a flicker of warmth touching his heart. He gently declined their offers of help. ”I’m a doctor myself. This is just a flesh wound. It looks worse than it is.”

His gaze returned to the woman on the ground, his brow furrowed in concentration. ”Right now, this aunty is in critical condition. I need to perform first aid immediately. Please, give me some space. Let the air circulate.”

In truth, her condition was far worse than just ”critical”; it was dire. This wasn’t a simple gunshot wound. The bullet had been infused with supernatural energy. For an ordinary person who could barely withstand a normal bullet, the addition of terrifying ability power was a death sentence. That was why she had collapsed into a coma the instant she was hit.

He had to act now, or her chances of survival would plummet.

”FUCK!”

Hundreds of meters away, the man in black saw that Chen Fei had dodged the shot. He cursed under his breath, his eyes glinting. In his line of work, there was one rule, taught to him by his master, Jack the Blade, that he never broke: no matter how confident you are, if the first shot fails, you retreat immediately. You get out of the country if you have to.

Assassins could strike multiple times, but they only had one life.

Caution. Caution. Always caution.

You troublesome People of Huaxia. I’ll be back. Fuck! he thought, taking one last look at Chen Fei’s face through the scope. With hands moving like a whirlwind, he rapidly disassembled the massive sniper rifle, packed the parts into a black case hidden within his trench coat, and vanished.

He was correct to retreat. But having angered Death itself, could he truly escape so easily?

Meanwhile, back at the Northern Mountain City High-Speed Railway Station, Chen Fei was preparing to use his needles to perform emergency treatment on the woman when a haughty-looking middle-aged man stopped him.

”Stop! The patient’s condition is extremely unstable! You can’t just act recklessly!”

Chen Fei frowned, his patience wearing thin. ”I am a doctor,” he said sharply. ”I know exactly what I’m doing. The patient is in critical danger and needs immediate medical attention!”

”A doctor? You?” The arrogant man scanned Chen Fei with disdain. ”By ’doctor,’ I assume you mean you’re some kind of hospital intern, correct? Do you have any idea who I am? This is my business card!”

He mockingly held out a card. On it were the words: Harmony Hospital of Capital City, Attending Physician, Lvv Mingyuan.

Someone in the crowd gasped. ”Wow! Harmony Hospital of Capital City is a top national hospital! Sir, are you one of their specialists?”
