Medical Sage

”Mom, I understand. What should I do now?” By this point, Chen Hao had grasped the severity of the issue. He no longer dared to take Chen Fei lightly, his voice somewhat trance-like and meek.

At this moment, all he could think about was regret. How much better things would have been if he hadn’t been so blind and rejected the other party’s kindness!

”Child, be strong. Maybe Mr. Chen won’t be so petty. Here, let me call your dad now,” Dong Shuxian said, managing a weak smile to comfort him as she took out her phone and walked away to call her husband, Chen Yaoyang.

”Shuxian, what’s the matter? It’s the middle of the night, I was almost asleep,” Chen Yaoyang said with confusion upon answering the phone, wondering why his wife would call him at such an hour.

”Yaoyang, listen to me, something terrible has happened. Something’s wrong with Hao...” Hearing her husband’s voice, Dong Shuxian could no longer feign composure. Her voice quivered anxiously as she began to sob, causing Chen Yaoyang to freeze and panic on the other end of the line.

”Shuxian, don’t cry. What exactly happened? What’s wrong with Hao? Tell me slowly, don’t rush, tell me!” Hearing his wife’s cries, Chen Yaoyang was startled and immediately panicked as a sense of foreboding washed over him.

”Hao... Hao has a tumor in his brain. And it seems to have worsened. The cancer cells have already started to spread,” Dong Shuxian continued between sobs.

”What? A tumor!? And the cancer cells have started to spread?” Chen Yaoyang was so shocked he almost dropped the phone, his face turning deathly pale in an instant.

A tumor? Malignant cancer!? Even with his status as the acting head of the Hong Kong Chen Family, he felt his heart plummet into an abyss of despair. His hands turned ice-cold and began to tremble as though a knife was twisting in his heart.

He, Chen Yaoyang, only had this one son. And now, they were saying he had a brain tumor—that he had cancer? How was that possible? It had to be a joke...

”Yaoyang, we just left XXX Hospital. Can you... can you please plead with Mr. Chen to take a look at Hao? It seems he already knew about Hao’s illness before, but we were too blind to take it seriously...” Dong Shuxian said, still crying. Her words struck Chen Yaoyang like a bolt of lightning.

”Wait, what did you say? You said Mr. Chen had already identified Hao’s illness? When? Why didn’t I know? Why didn’t you tell me?” Chen Yaoyang’s attitude toward Chen Fei was one of reverence, as if he were an ancestor to be worshipped.

But now, his wife was telling him that Mr. Chen had already pointed out their son’s illness, yet she and their son had been too blind to pay attention.

”You don’t remember? That time at the airport, when Hao was so tactless he made him leave in anger. It was because of that incident. Mr. Chen kindly warned us that Hao’s headaches might not be a simple matter, but neither Hao nor I took it seriously, so we never told you...” Dong Shuxian said, her voice filled with regret.

”Foolish! Utterly foolish! Hao was foolish, but how could you be just as foolish? Have you forgotten about Mr. Chen’s incredible medical skills? How else do you think he revived our father? And with his status, why would he ever speak idly? If he said there was a problem with Hao’s headaches, then there was definitely a problem! How could you be so foolish!” Chen Yaoyang cried out, his voice filled with agitated disbelief.

Their son might not have known about Mr. Chen’s identity or abilities, but his wife, Dong Shuxian, was perfectly aware. Yet, she had still been so muddle-headed as to ignore Mr. Chen’s kind warning. How could this have happened?

”I... I... It’s my fault, Yaoyang. This is all my fault. I just thought, Hao is so young and healthy, how could he possibly have a serious illness? Yaoyang, you must beg Mr. Chen. Oh, right, I’ll call my brother and my dad, I’ll have them...” Dong Shuxian blamed herself, speaking in a panicked rush. She was clearly beside herself.

Fortunately, she had stepped into a corner to make the call, away from her son. If he had seen her in this state, he would have felt even more hopeless, sinking deeper into despair.

”Stop. Don’t call your brother or our father yet. If Mr. Chen gets annoyed by this, it will only make things more difficult,” Chen Yaoyang immediately interjected.

”Then... what should we do now?” Dong Shuxian asked, her voice trembling.

”I’ll handle it. I will go and plead with Mr. Chen. You wait for my news. That’s all, I’m hanging up,” Chen Yaoyang said slowly before ending the call.

After hanging up, he couldn’t help but pull a cigarette from his pocket and light it. He leaned against the wall, his expression numb and vacant. He remained that way until the cigarette burned down to his fingertips, the sharp sting finally jolting him back to his senses like a man whose soul had just returned to his body.

A tumor? Malignant cancer? He gave a bitter smile.

He knew that this kind of diagnosis was essentially a death sentence. Despite his prominent status as the acting head of the Hong Kong Chen Family, and even with an Ability User in their family, he felt utterly powerless. It was all completely useless.

Ability Users? They were good at killing and destruction, that was for sure. But healing? They were incapable of it. Ordinary Ability Users simply didn’t have that power. They could only stand by and watch someone die.

Looks like I have to go talk to the Great Elder. Coming back to himself, Chen Yaoyang forcefully crushed the cigarette butt in his hand, left the room, and went to find the Great Elder of the Chen Family.

In the presidential suite of a top hotel in Macau, the Great Elder of the Chen Family, Chen Yuan, sat cross-legged in the spacious hall. Wisps of shimmering fire swirled around his body, radiating an intense heat. His murky eyes glowed with a crimson light. He was clearly in the middle of cultivation.

Although it was well-known that Ability Users cultivated at an astonishingly slow rate, every little bit counted. If one became lazy and gave up, they would eventually be surpassed by others. By then, catching up would be impossible. The cultivation of an Ability User was painfully slow, like a snail’s crawl, remaining unchanged for decades on end.

”Yaoyang? What brings you here?” Just then, a knock came at his door. Chen Yaoyang entered with a dazed expression, causing the Great Elder to furrow his brow slightly. He disliked being disturbed during his cultivation.

Chen Yaoyang seemed to sense the displeasure in the elder’s tone. He saw the wisps of flame swirling by his side and felt the air turn unbearably hot, despite the air conditioning. A profound reverence immediately filled his eyes.

He spoke cautiously, ”Great Elder, I have a matter to report.”

”Speak. What is it?” the Great Elder of the Chen Family said expressionlessly.

”It’s about Hao... he’s been diagnosed with cancer...” Upon receiving permission, Chen Yaoyang slowly began to explain his son’s situation.

But before he was even two-thirds of the way through his story, the Great Elder’s brow shot up, and he scolded him, ”Foolish! Given Mr. Chen’s status and power, why would he ever speak carelessly or make such a baseless claim?”

In his eyes, Chen Fei was a top-tier Ancient Martial Arts expert, completely on his own level—or perhaps even beyond it. How dare a mere Chen Hao, a junior of the family’s fourth generation, question the good intentions behind such a man’s advice? He was simply overestimating himself! It was no wonder the Great Elder was so displeased and angry.

If this created a rift between Chen Fei and the Chen Family, the consequences would be dire. He, Chen Yuan, would absolutely not allow that to happen.

”Great Elder, I know Shuxian and Hao were in the wrong. But... Hao is my only son. So I was thinking... I was thinking I would go and plead with Mr. Chen one more time...” Chen Yaoyang said, treading very carefully before finally clenching his teeth.

This was clearly the real reason for his visit. Hao was his son; he couldn’t just stand by and watch him die. But the circumstances were so complicated that he feared his audacity might displease Mr. Chen.

Even so, he had steeled himself to make this report. Hao was his son, his own flesh and blood. He couldn’t just do nothing. Even if it risked offending Mr. Chen, he had to try. This was his only hope now, just as it had been for Elder Dong.

”Plead with Mr. Chen again?”

The Great Elder of the Chen Family fell silent, seemingly lost in thought.

In the room, the flames swirling around the Great Elder radiated a blistering heat. Chen Yaoyang was drenched in sweat, trembling as if in a furnace. But he gritted his teeth and held his ground. As a father, he had to fight for this. He had to persist.

”Go, then. You have one chance,” the Great Elder finally said after a long pause, his tone cold. ”Remember, you absolutely must not allow him to develop any ill will toward our Chen Family. Otherwise, you will step down from your current position.”

Hearing this, Chen Yaoyang trembled violently. He knew exactly what that meant. But even so, he firmed his resolve, gritting his teeth as he said, ”I understand. Thank you, Great Elder. I’ll take my leave now.”

With that, drenched in sweat but his expression resolute, he backed out of the presidential suite.

Sigh... Let’s just hope for the best.

Watching the door slowly close, the Great Elder of the Chen Family let out a soft sigh before closing his eyes and resuming his cultivation.

He could understand Chen Yaoyang’s persistence, but he also had his own duties and considerations. That young man was simply too terrifying, both now and for the future. The Hong Kong Chen Family simply couldn’t afford to provoke him.
