High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 3039: Chapter 52: An Unfinished Deal

Aside from the pastries that scream miserably before you shove them into your mouth, a wizard’s cocktail party isn’t much more interesting than a mortal’s. Considering Zheng Qing’s current situation, even that remnant of fun needs another markdown.

As for those sneaky glances at the party, Zheng Qing had long since become immune.

If, during his more than two years at First University, the thing he had mastered the most was little tricks for counter-curses, then the second thing he had mastered was learning not to care too much about others’ opinions—as the Doctor would say, if you care too much about others’ opinions, you’ll become their underpants, having to catch every fart they let out.

The Doctor rarely uses coarse language.

So when he does, it’s best to listen.

The discussion about Edge Academy hiring a two-headed ogre didn’t last long among the three young wizard men and women, because a proper cocktail party requires the host’s maintenance, and today the elder wizards had already given these youngsters more than enough space and time.

Soon, accompanied by the first guest from the O’Brien family coming over to greet the hosts, other guests appeared one after another in front of Su Shijun and Zheng Qing, offering simple greetings and blessings, with occasional ice-cold jokes. Jiang Yu seemed unwilling to participate in such conversations in this setting, but Zheng Qing held her tightly, preventing her from breaking free.

Su Shijun pretended not to see the tugging happening right in front of her.

This made the guests more cautious with their tone and word choice when greeting.

For instance, the gray robes from the School Works Committee referred to the three with ’Dean Zheng,’ ’Director Su,’ and ’Captain Jiang’ when toasting, as Su Shijun was in charge of a laboratory at the school, while Jiang Yu was handling the role of Captain of Absolution.

And guests who were relatively less acquainted, like a witch from the Black family, addressed Zheng Qing with the very polite ’Dean Zheng,’ but referred to the two witches more familiarly as ’Miss Su’ and ’Miss Jiang’—a smart strategy that wouldn’t cause any distinctions or misunderstandings.

A few familiar elders, like Master Bao Yangzi from the relevant department, naturally called them by their names when greeting the three.

Overall, because of Zheng Qing’s presence, today’s cocktail party was a small ordeal for everyone. But if Zheng Qing weren’t here, the party’s standards might be slightly lower—

”——Oh!”

A brief exclamation sounded from a distance.

Su Shijun glanced in the direction of the voice and sighed a small sigh.

It was Furry Bean, who accidentally bumped into a guest. Of course, before the real collision, Gouzi had already quickly disappeared under the witch’s skirt, which was obviously more of a stimulus for the female guest than being knocked over.

The reason Furry Bean acted so impolitely was because Poseidon was teaming up with three Great Elves and Zhu Si, forming a small Hunting team to chase a vicious Tendaros Demon around the courtyard.

This was the most popular game among the Wizard’s House’s children.

”——Keep an eye on your dog, don’t let it fool around with Dong Dong!” As she spoke, Su Shijun paused on Jiang Yu, adding: ”Miss Jiang can help me over here...”

Zheng Qing breathed a sigh of relief and, without saying another word, quickly vanished from the two witches’ sight.

Jiang Yu chuckled lightly.

”——You actually dared to let him disappear from both our sights?”

Her tone carried a hint of mockery, obviously teasing what Su Shijun had told her that day in the Silent Forest: ”You know, today’s party has quite a few young witches attending, and they might restrain themselves in front of you, but beyond ’courtesy,’ who knows how wild they’ll get... I shouldn’t have to spell it out, right?”

The Upper House Member from the Moon Council was very calm about this.

”Outside of Palin, there isn’t any real threat.”

She shamelessly put her arm around Jiang Yu’s waist, elegantly clinking glasses with a guest who wore a surprised expression, before giving a light smile: ”If you stay in his bedroom for a while, you should know our Dean Zheng is a tad bit of a neat freak... He can barely manage the two of us, where would he get the courage to provoke others? Haven’t you noticed how smartly he keeps a certain distance when dealing with Korma?”

Jiang Yu didn’t hear a word of what Su Shijun said at the end.

She stopped in her tracks.

”——What do you mean by staying in his bedroom for a while?” She tried to control her speaking tone.

The Big Fox from Qingqiu Mountain exposed the just right amount of confusion and smile: ”Oh, you didn’t know about this... before he came to Buji Island, um... how do you think ’mind mingling’ happens?”

Saying the last sentence, she leaned in to whisper in the young witch’s ear, the warm breath making Jiang Yu’s fair face slightly flush.

Jiang Yu was very certain.

Right now, she’d rather bring Elena back than face this Big Fox alone!

...

...

Zheng Qing caught Furry Bean at the edge of the party when it was hiding under a cluster of hibiscus, loyally playing the role of ’prey.’

”——What a good dog!”

Zheng Qing scooped it into his arms, smiling as he petted its head: ”Knows when its owner is in trouble... But today you can’t keep fooling around with Dong Dong, beware of a scolding afterward.”

Gouzi tucked its tail, obediently ’meowing’ once.

Then it tilted its head to look behind him.

Zheng Qing followed its gaze and was surprised to see an acquaintance.

Andrew of the Trident Sword—perhaps he was the least prestigious person at the entire party, so he could only wander at the party’s edge, and seeing Zheng Qing made him both excited and awkward.

”Ah, it’s an honor to meet you... Dean Zheng.” The representative from the Trident Sword took a small step forward, his chubby round face full of flattery, then his eyes fell on Furry Bean, complimenting: ”——This dog is beautiful!”

Zheng Qing blinked.

Ah, the barrier, ah, the separation.

He couldn’t help but laugh briefly, dropping the dog from his arms.

The dog circled around his feet and obediently vanished from sight.

”——Speak properly!” The Dean from the Edge Academy took the glass handed by a sprite and clinked it with Andrew’s lightly: ”Though we’re not doing business anymore, I fondly remember the generosity of Trident Sword in the past.”

After graduating, Zheng Qing’s mission from the Executioner led to his dealings with the Trident Sword being forced to halt. The Trident Sword was also well-aware and never used the contracts signed back then to file any requests with Danghag. This made Zheng Qing quite mindful, yet he hadn’t found the right opportunity to express his apologies.

Andrew blinked his little eyes too, riding his luck, revealing a bit overly exaggerated surprise: ”Does that mean you’ll continue to provide those Fu Bullets to the investigation bureau? That’s the best news I’ve heard all year!”
