High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 3024: Chapter 37: Clerk

A wave is not settled before another arises.

Just as Zheng Qing was restless about the new staff for Edge Academy and the relevant departments, the San You Bookstore sent a new message, making him even more distressed.

”It might just be a false alarm, but since the message has arrived, you have to go take a look.”

The Yellow Flowered Cat lay perched on the counter of the Beta Town’s San You Bookstore, lazily notifying the dust-covered young wizard who had rushed back, with a trace of inexplicable delight in its voice: ”Weren’t you always curious as a child about where that old man went to save the world? Today you can experience it yourself.”

The ’false alarm’ it mentioned was the new message Zheng Qing had received not long ago.

A San You Bookstore located in the Outer Domain had detected a phenomenon similar to an invasion of high-dimensional aura and thus sent a plea for emergency assistance to the headquarters—just as a ’book’ serves as an intersection of the two-dimensional world and the three-dimensional world, a bookstore serves as an intersection between the three-dimensional world and the high-dimensional world. Every San You Bookstore is born at these intersections, monitoring the influence of the high-dimensional world on the low-dimensional world.

Most of the time, these intersections have no impact on the low-dimensional world.

Understanding in reverse from higher dimensions—such as when you read a book, often the text merely passes through your eyes simply, without affecting you, let alone the wider world.

A bit more severe, when reading a book you laugh, cry, or neglect sleep and food; at this point, the influence of the two-dimensional world on the three-dimensional world has started to overflow but is confined to the individual, the situation is not serious, and the world can self-repair.

More severe, the readers of a sensational novel imitate the actions of strange characters in the book, committing murder or arson; readers of romance stories organize two villages to fight; etc., at this point, the two-dimensional world has already had a significant impact on the three-dimensional world.

Most catastrophic, for example, the artist who incited a riot in a beer hall using a book, stirring up thousands of ordinary people, resulting in one of the greatest disasters in human history; the physicist who wrote down the mass-energy formula on a few sheets of paper, creating a terrible weapon capable of potentially destroying the world, etc.

These are just the influences of the low-dimensional world on the high-dimensional world.

For the high-dimensional world to influence the low-dimensional world is even simpler — through books and artworks, burning, flooding, cutting, freely tampering or deleting, even a babbling toddler from the high-dimensional world can easily cause severe harm to a low-dimensional world.

The Magical World is roughly the same.

Of course, because magic itself is a form of high-dimensional energy, wizards who possess this power retain a certain amount of initiative when facing influences from even higher dimensions.

The San You Bookstore is one such representation.

It is born at the intersection of high-dimensional and low-dimensional realms, monitoring the energy interactions between two worlds, and the bookstore’s managers must constantly deal with those spilled risks.

Whew!

Zheng Qing threw on a wide cloak, while counting the number of Blood Symbol Bullets he had in reserve, asked without looking up: ”The intelligence we just received is somewhat brief; from which world was the message sent? Aren’t you coming with me?”

”Did you ever see that old man take me along when going to save the world?” The Flower Cat twitched its whiskers, its smile growing increasingly nasty: ”As for which world, you should be very familiar with it, it’s Palin.”

When it said ’Palin’, it was as casually as mentioning the moon or Mars.

However, Zheng Qing was struck as if hit by Petrification Magic, stiffening on the spot. The fingers holding the Blood Symbol Bullet paused at the Colt’s magazine, not moving for a long time.

After a long while.

He finally lifted his head and looked at the Flower Cat, a bitter smile on his face: ”Why there? Are you sure? Could it be a false alarm? How about you go take a look first?”

His tone already carried a hint of pleading.

The Flower Cat paid no attention, simply turned around, aiming its rear end at him, and swished its tail, the intention very clear.

The young store manager wore a worried expression as he hung the Charm Gun, touched the few rings on his hand, and walked heavy-hearted toward the depths of the bookstore. After pulling open the cabinet door in the room’s corner, he couldn’t help but turn his head again and asked: ”Really not going?”

”Get out!”

The Flower Cat shouted at the top of its voice: ”Are your ears wearing jewelry? If the message is true, wait any longer and the bookstore over there will be gone... planning to go over and pick up the bodies?”

The Little Green Snake swayed its tail tip unhappily, indicating it was not jewelry.

Zheng Qing let out a long sigh, finally ceasing to hesitate, lowered his head, and crawled into the cabinet.

Bang!

The cabinet door slammed shut behind him.

”Serves you right!”

The Flower Cat’s voice came faintly with schadenfreude, but at this moment, Zheng Qing could scarcely hear clearly. Before his eyes, everything was dark, with cold walls pressing on either side, stumbling along the narrow corridor for a few steps, he pushed a door and returned to the San You Bookstore of Hui Zi Ji.

Here was the central hub of all bookstores, the fastest route to the Outer Domain.

Stepping out of the cabinet, the young store manager glanced in the direction of the door before retracting his gaze, eyes falling on the head of the brass little snake on the doorknob, reaching out a finger to stroke, oiling the snake’s tail, listening to the slow turning of the door’s mechanism, he held the doorknob, murmuring the name of that distant world:

”—Palin.”

Click!

The pitch-black wooden door suddenly opened, revealing an equally dark corridor.

Walking a hundred or so meters down the corridor led to another wooden door.

Pushing it open led to the distant Outer Domain.

Palin is a new world located at the edge of the Alliance’s expansion, with few wizards, and the San You Bookstore was located in the northern city called ’North Pa’ of this world.

With the Order Seed he possessed, there was no need to prepare Flerek.

When he pushed the door, crossing the world’s edge, arriving in this place full of danger and opportunity, it seemed that it was just twilight here, warm light streaming through the glass, tinting the bookshelves in the store, as if he could smell the taste of orange soda.

No.

Not as if.

The young store manager deliberately slowed his steps, craning his neck toward the counter at the door, and immediately spotted the figure of the witch emitting the orange scent. At this moment, she was unaware of the added presence in the store, lying at the desk, sleeping soundly, wine-red wavy long hair spread across the desk, and the transparent Crystal Ball gently rotating not far away.

Squeak!

The detection Peeping Mirror hanging by the door let out a sharp explosive sound, startling the sleeping store employee awake.

It took her a full three seconds to realize the unexpected guest in the store.

”Ah! Sorry! Store Manager, I accidentally fell asleep... I didn’t mean to!”

Elena blushed intensely, apologizing enthusiastically: ”It’s just, the magic power here is too abundant, always making people want to sleep. I’m truly sorry!”

This scene gave Zheng Qing a sense of déjà vu.
