High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 3034: Chapter 47: There’s More Than Books in the Library

Forty-one sat upright on top of a Jiliang, as the trees ahead became increasingly sparse, he could vaguely see the silent palace at the end of the path, and he quietly breathed a sigh of relief, then glanced back.

Behind him was a convoy of carriages.

About ten or more, connected front to back, one after another, like a massive centipede.

The head of the centipede was the Jiliang on which Forty-one sat.

However, the carriages behind him were all empty at the front. There were no horses to pull them, no coachmen, nor any other escorts. The curved shafts hovered in the air, as if resting on an invisible horse. The heavy carriage was made of Yin Chen Wood, intricately carved with dense runes. Even the slightest bump would cause those runes to emit a series of subtle Spell Light. Numerous ’light ropes’ of varying thickness connected the carriages to the Jiliang, with visible magical power flowing between the ropes.

As Forty-one turned to look during this moment, at least seven or eight of the carriages’ bodies were glowing with Spell Light of different intensities, with the light ropes transforming between thicknesses in cycles.

This was a good sign, proving those protective spells were still diligently working.

The Wenma beneath him snorted impatiently, signaling the rider to quiet down.

Jiliang was the Wenma.

This was a very rare magical creature, with golden eyes, a multicolored coat, and a mane that burned like flames. Long ago, wizards believed that riding such an animal granted immortality. Later, they realized it wasn’t riding it that granted immortality; only immortal wizards had the power to capture and ride such powerful magical creatures.

Forty-one was not strong.

He was just an ordinary registered wizard; on Buji Island, there were thousands of wizards with this status. Not every registered wizard had the chance to sit on such a precious beast.

The school was truly powerful, and he was merely a puppet executing its tasks.

Indeed, a puppet.

This was how Forty-one viewed himself.

Today, his task was to escort a batch of ’collections’ to the Order headquarters. These collections were transferred from Babel’s library to Order’s library, likely involving some exchange between the bigwigs of two departments. He didn’t know the specifics; he only knew this shouldn’t be handled by someone as insignificant as a registered wizard.

Even though he was already a high-level registered wizard.

But the one truly responsible for this—Shadow Cat—had disappeared somewhere, so as its subordinate, he had to bear this responsibility—as Master Bao Yangzi told him before he entered ’Order’: When working with a cat, some things are unavoidable.

Initially, he thought the master was using some cryptic language or hinting at something.

Now he understood, the old man meant exactly what he said: You can’t expect a cat to be as conscientious as a human.

The path gradually reached its end.

Behind the tall archway was the current residence of Order. As he passed through the archway, Forty-one couldn’t help squinting his eyes. When he left in the morning, the gates of Ziwei Palace were still empty, but now they seemed to have a plaque hanging above them?

Before he could clearly see the words on the plaque.

The Wenma beneath him leisurely stopped.

”Ah, please hold on!”

Forty-one grabbed the mane of the Wenma beneath him to steady himself—although its mane appeared to be flaming, when held, it felt substantial, like warm cotton—the Wenma cocked its head and glanced back.

The warlock clumsily dismounted, quietly exhaling a breath.

If given the choice, he would rather ride a broom or sit on a magic carpet than this highly dangerous magical creature.

”Thank you for your hard work.”

The young man in a blue robe ceremoniously bowed to the steed, then fished out a handful of colorful gemstones from his pocket and placed them into the leather pouch hanging around Wenma’s neck: ”This is the final payment, please check it.”

The Wenma straightened its neck, weighed the pouch slightly, nodded almost imperceptibly, roared once, causing the light ropes attached to it to break off one by one. The carriages landed with heavy thuds. The Wenma then turned and wandered off, disappearing into the depths of Silent Forest.

”Why are you only here now!”

A somewhat shrill complaint came from beneath Forty-one’s feet. He looked down and saw a small black cat, about the size of a fist, crouching beside him, arms folded, looking listless.

This was the Order Chief’s avatar—after the incident in Palin World, Zheng Qing vaguely realized the necessity of maintaining the bookstore’s independence, so he changed his previous idea and did not use the title ’Manager’ in the department, but instead directly followed Master Bao Yangzi’s suggestion, using ’Order Chief’.

”Sorry, the final batch had too many ’contained items’, so loading took a bit longer.” Forty-one briefly explained.

The so-called ’contained items’ were part of the Department’s confiscations from shutting down illegal dimensional laboratories—some ’failed dimensional experiments’—since whether these dimensional experiments succeeded or failed, they inherently carried high-dimensional pollution and possessed some forbidden curse characteristics, the department would promptly destroy them upon encounter. Those that couldn’t be destroyed or had certain research value would be ’contained’ in the library of the relevant institution, existing as ’entity books’ under ’special barcodes’.

However, because these items were not highly valuable and were troublesome to store, they became quite a nuisance within the department. Over time, the number of these cumbersome items increased, and Babel Tower took advantage of this opportunity to copy the library for Order and transferred some of these long-stored contained items from the library’s depths.

”I shouldn’t have accepted Babel Tower’s gift... I should’ve known they had ulterior motives.”

The little black cat grumbled, laboriously climbed onto the first carriage, stood on the shafts to look down, and the ’Alpha-09’ on the first box was particularly conspicuous, prompting it to complain, ”Why are there Alpha-labelled things? Did they dump all the items that their library couldn’t hold over here? This is a library, not a warehouse!”

Alpha-labelled contained items belonged to the Department’s most dangerous category and were often stored in the deepest parts of various institutions’ libraries.

Matters involving the scheming between the bigwigs were not something that Forty-one could comment on.

He wisely lifted his head and looked above the main gate.

Where it had been empty now hung a plaque, the characters for ’Xuanhuang Palace’ were slightly blurred.

”Did we change our name?”

The little errand boy who had just completed a transport mission looked confused.
