High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1114: Chapter 176 Fatal Topic

”Do you know where that black cat can be found?”

Upon hearing Zheng Qing’s description, Elena’s eyes shone brightly as she pressed for an answer.

Jiang Yu glanced at her meaningfully, then turned to look at Zheng Qing, lifted his coffee cup, and smiled without a word.

It wasn’t appropriate not to speak. But he couldn’t tell everything either; at the very least, Zheng Qing felt it was necessary to conceal his other identity. This was truly a test of his conversational skills.

The young scholarship student coughed softly, answering vaguely:

”Um, I’ve heard them say it has been seen near Lin Zhong Lake... You know how cats are, always prone to wandering. It’s uncertain if it merely took a casual stroll near Lin Zhong Lake. According to the two mice in our shop, they’ve seen the black cat in Silent Forest too, though it’s unclear if it’s the same one.”

Possessing a dual perspective, he, of course, knew why Elena was interested in a black cat. Just two days ago, he had dealt with Gypsy witches in the Silent Forest using the identity of the black cat. So when answering this question, he tried his best to blur the witches’ focus, casually mentioning various places.

”Can that black cat talk?” Elena asked softly.

Zheng Qing was stunned for a moment—he needed to seriously consider if he had ever spoken in front of a certain little white cat, he also had to recall whether the black cat had spoken on the night it found the snake molt, and he had to ponder ’himself’ as a third-party hearsay witness if he knew the answer to this question.

This was very important, after all, the two people sitting beside him, one was his girlfriend, the other was someone suspected to be the little white cat. Each of them was incredibly intelligent, none was easy to handle.

Lost in thought, he failed to notice the third person at the table.

”A talking black cat, truly a rare sight,” Jiang Yu said, holding his coffee cup and stirring slowly with a spoon, answering in a calm and composed manner, ”However, as far as I know, that black cat can not only talk but also change size.”

Elena’s interest appeared to grow.

”Have you seen that cat too?” She rummaged through her bag for a notebook, evidently wanting to note something down.

Zheng Qing’s face turned somewhat pale.

Jiang Yu was taken aback for a few seconds.

”Um, Li Meng told me about it,” she mumbled, looking down, clearly trying to recollect any potential overlap between the ’witch’ and the black cat.

Observing that the topic of discussion was becoming increasingly difficult, Zheng Qing felt obligated to end this challenging conversation. He set his coffee cup down on the table heavily:

”In any case, sometimes the school feels very small, like you can reach its ends with a casual stroll.”

”But at other times, it seems so large... Some little critters scurry behind any nook and cranny and then their traces can no longer be found. With that black cat, this feeling becomes even more pronounced.”

”This is probably what they call the ’universality’ of paradoxes and the ’unity of opposites’... Um, let me refill your coffee.”

With a tone that sounded like a concluding statement, Zheng Qing tried to finish the previous discussion about the cat. He then stood up, picked up the coffee pot, and poured steaming hot coffee for the two witches.

He felt that if the conversation went on, the coffee cup he was holding might accidentally end up on the floor.

But Elena’s next sentence made him regret forcefully interrupting the previous conversation.

”Indeed,” Elena picked up the salt shaker, added a bit of salt to her cup, and shook her head with a sigh, ”Let’s not even talk about cats. Even if a wizard was hiding in the school, we wouldn’t be able to find him... You all remember Su Shijun’s husband, right? She said months ago that he was at First University, and up to now, no one has found him.”

Zheng Qing’s coffee pot trembled violently for a moment, spilling a few drops of coffee, staining the pristine tablecloth with several glaring scars.

Jiang Yu, who had just taken a small sip of coffee, also started coughing violently.

Elena looked at them both with suspicion.

”Ah, sorry, sorry... The cough came on so suddenly; it startled you,” Jiang Yu immediately produced a handkerchief, seeming to want to help Zheng Qing wipe the coffee stains off the cup and saucer.

Zheng Qing quickly came to his senses.

”Oh, oh... It’s fine, it’s fine,” he mumbled in agreement—as if he was truly startled by Jiang Yu’s cough—while sidestepping Jiang Yu’s handkerchief and raising his hand to summon the sprites hanging from the ceiling: ”No need to dirty your handkerchief; the sprites are best suited for this sort of task.”

A few green sprites chirped and fluttered over, and in the blink of an eye, the coffee spots on the table were cleaned spotless in a sweep of faint green halos.

The Gypsy witch, holding her notebook midair, looked left and right for a long while before shaking her head and reprimanding Zheng Qing: ”You’re really too careless... Lucky for you, Jiang Yu is our classmate and won’t hold it against you.”

”We are all friends, no need for such formalities,” Jiang Yu put away his handkerchief, glanced at Elena, and smiled faintly, ”I’m really sorry, I spoke too eagerly just now, drank a little too quickly.”

Zheng Qing carefully held the coffee pot, gently placing it at one corner of the table and then eased himself back into his seat, not daring to pull the chair closer even a little bit.

Fearing to cause any unusual noise.

Elena bit her lip with a hint of a smile and glanced at the witch at the next table: ”Speaking of which, who is the Su Councilor’s other half? There have been many guesses in the papers already... Your Zhongshan Jiang Family has always been close to the Qingqiu Su Family; don’t you have some insider news to share with friends?”

Zheng Qing also secretly perked up his ears, gripping the knife and fork in hand, pretending to busy himself with a piece of cake on the table.

”I’ve only heard that he’s quite young.” Jiang Yu sipped his coffee with a smile, ”But there are many young wizards at First University. To exclude each one by one would probably require quite an effort.”

”Quite young?” Elena pondered, ”Perhaps a student currently studying at our school?”

Zheng Qing applied a bit too much force while cutting the cake; the knife hit the porcelain plate with a crisp ’ding’ sound. The warlock inhaled softly.

”That possibility cannot be dismissed,” Jiang Yu nodded earnestly, then suddenly turned to Zheng Qing, asking, ”Your Poseidon is a Little Fox, and I heard it’s quite liked by that little girl Su Ya... Has it heard any news?”

Elena’s eyes brightened, also turning towards Zheng Qing.

Looking at the sticky cream on his fork, Zheng Qing felt terrible.

”Poseidon? Ha, that, that silly thing... It, it can’t even talk; what kind of news could it hear?” The young state-funded student laughed awkwardly, providing what seemed to be a very logical explanation.
