High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 899: Chapter 247: The Frog Must Die

The Rat Wizard stared intently, only to see that the vampire duke of the Karen Family had somehow reverted to his bat form, using a pair of broad bat wings to shield himself in front.

Of course, in the violent explosion that had just occurred, Duke Milton’s bat wings had also become unrecognizable, like a sheet of xuan paper that had been soaked by a child in water and then fished out again, wrinkled and torn to shreds.

A bit further away, the Wandering Wizard comfortably sat on a tree stump, legs dangling, leisurely puffing on a cigar—he had removed his mask, revealing that aged but clean face—seemingly unaffected by the magic that had just transpired.

”Where are the people?” The Rat Wizard stubbornly looked around, repeating the question he had asked a few seconds earlier.

Duke Milton had just retracted his bat wings and transformed back into human form, at the moment vigorously shaking his head in an attempt to clear the confusion and soul tremor induced by the concussion, naturally not responding to the Rat Wizard’s query.

It was the Wandering Wizard, though, who quickly grasped the meaning behind the Rat Wizard’s question.

”People are not here, they must have left... Hisss...” he took a heavy drag of his cigar, blowing out several beautiful white smoke rings. Perhaps it was the effect of the smoke, but his voice was less slick than usual, sounding quite hoarse:

”...That little lass from the Su Family threw a big firework and ran off, now she’s long gone without a trace... I must admit, your earlier argument about rescuing Zhao by surrounding Wei wasn’t bad, that girl had to leave us behind to save those kids.”

”As for our other companion...”

At this point, the Wandering Wizard spread out his hands, making a helpless gesture: ”First, bound and suppressed by the formation, then took a full brunt of the heavenly retribution... You know, its identity is quite special, compared to us, it has a lower tolerance for that magic.”

”If you’re lucky and swift, I estimate that before the remnants of that magic completely dissipate, you might find some fragments of it in this scorched earth... If you’re slower, we’ll only be able to remember our comrade in our minds.”

The Rat Wizard, with a sullen face, scurried back and forth through the scorched earth and ultimately had to admit the Wandering Wizard’s assessment.

The largest piece of skeletal remains it found of its companion was a scorched thigh bone less than three inches long.

”Demons?! Ha, demons!” The Rat Wizard held the bone aloft, laughing in a high-pitched and piercing tone, sounding incredibly shrill: ”What an interesting affair... For centuries, I slaughtering demons until my hands were weary, never thinking that now I’d be in cahoots with them, joining their ranks. If that old undying headmaster from the school were still around, he would’ve rushed into the Underground World and burned all my mouse descendants to ashes already.”

”Hisss...” The Wandering Wizard took a deep breath, exhaling a rich plume of smoke.

Smoke swirled around him, shrouding his face, making his tone seem more elusive: ”So, Nameless Headmaster really isn’t at the school anymore, right.”

The Rat Wizard clamped its mouth shut, making no sound.

The Wandering Wizard seemed not to want to let it off the hook: ”Hisss... Three years ago, the Dark Council already issued a list of tasks, hoping to ascertain the Headmaster’s whereabouts... Hisss... If you’d spoken up earlier, and claimed the Council’s reward, possibly your Mouse People’s evolution project would have already been successful... You wouldn’t need to undertake such thankless tasks alongside this decrepit old man... Hisss...”

”Now, both inside and outside the school, more and more forces are guessing that the old man is no longer there... Even if you now wanted to sell that information for a good price, you couldn’t.”

”Why bother? Wanting to be a whore and stand a monument at the same time...”

”This is my own business!” The Rat Wizard rudely interrupted the Wandering Wizard’s rambling, clutching the thigh bone, then pivoting to another sharp question: ”But speaking of which, I’m rather curious about something else... How did you manage it?”

The Wandering Wizard removed the cigar from his lips, a perfectly timed look of puzzlement on his face.

”That spell just now... no matter how you slice it, you shouldn’t have taken it so lightly,” said the Rat Wizard, eyes filled with suspicion.

”Hisss... Pfft.”

The Wandering Wizard shrugged, reinserted the cigar into his mouth, and soon his face was once again obscured by thick smoke: ”Just avoid being affected by the energy... Like you just said, it’s ultimately one’s own affair.”

...

...

”Thump!!”

A thick Return Soul Poplar was uprooted with its roots by Bull Head and thrown onto the snowy ground.

Its three companions, who had slipped from the treetops at some unknown time, stood not far behind Bull Head, silently observing everything.

Across from them, the teaching assistants, who had already determined that these ’Righteous Bodies’ were without command, noticed the abnormal situation, hastily picked up their law books, and uneasily gathered around their leader, Zhang Yu.

Zhang Yu didn’t hesitate and immediately organized everyone to rebuild the Defensive Array—correspondingly, he hadn’t forgotten the three Atoning Hunters who were still under the spell of magic, sleeping without awakening; he called them to consciousness.

”I was hoping you could sleep your way back to school,” said the seasoned teaching assistant with slightly graying hair, expressing some apology to the Atoning Hunters, ”It seems you need to be on alert now...”

”Madness, huh,” Thomas mumbled as he quietly pulled on his leather gloves, watching Bull Head across from him whose eyes had turned crimson, starting to uproot large trees one by one.

”I think ’out of control’ is a more fitting term,” Hilda corrected with a light tone.

While she spoke, a little creature leaped out of the hole just created by Bull Head, jumped in front of Bull Head, and opened its mouth to spit a gob at the huge creature facing it:

”Ptooey...”

Unlike the amphibians in the Silent Forest who liked to jump around in the snow on campus, many frogs retained habits deep in their genes due to the relatively harsh living conditions.

For instance, they detested the cold.

And this little one that had jumped out from the hole was clearly spending the winter in a spacious and warm cave under the tree roots, when unexpectedly, disaster fell from the sky while it was napping snugly in its burrow, and its home was torn apart with a mighty roar, revealing a world blanketed in white to its eyes.

Could there be anything more tragic?

”Rribbit...”

”Rribbit rribbit rribbit...”

”Rribbit hmm ahh rribbit rribbit...”

The frog that had crawled out of the tree pit strained its throat, wailing, venting its full belly of complaints and inner restlessness toward the moon above and the deep night. This caused others around to glance over.

”Shut up!”

Bull Head lifted its hoof and aimed it at the noisy little fellow, stomping down.

”Splat!”

Meat splattered in all directions.

This little Xiaoqing frog, having awakened from hibernation for less than five minutes, once again lost consciousness. Only this time, unlike its previous hibernation, the frog would not awaken with the spring breeze next year.
