High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 895: Chapter 243: The Standard Pose for Fleeing in Panic

”If today’s operation is really that important, why did the Rat Immortal only send one of his avatars here?” Upon hearing the Wandering Wizard’s words, Duke Milton sneered repeatedly and glanced at the sharp-faced Rat Wizard beside him, adding, ”And it’s not even the strongest one among his dozen or so avatars.”

”Because the Rat Immortal has more important things to attend to,” the Wandering Wizard replied simply.

”Do you think I wanted to come?” complained the Rat Immortal—or rather one of his avatars—spreading his paws and pouting, with a comical twitch of his whiskers at the corners of his mouth: ”Rather than fleeing for our lives through the Silent Forest with you all, avoiding the pursual of the Protection Array from the school, I’d rather stay in the library of the Underground City, helping to dust the books.”

”The Rat Immortal can have more important things to do, the other Big Wizards of the Moon Council also have more important things to do,” mocked Duke Milton, copying the slippery emphasis previously used by the Wandering Wizard, ”If I remember correctly, the original purpose of the Dark Council was merely to provide everyone with an additional platform for communication and exchange... No one was thinking of creating a second Moon Council, or a second Wizard Council.”

”After all, those who have a chair now also had a chair elsewhere before.”

This answer revealed many unsettling signs.

The Rat Immortal’s avatar couldn’t help but take another look at Duke Milton, then turned its head and cautiously glanced at the Wandering Wizard. It feared that the hot-tempered old man from the legends would wind up his fist and give the little vampire a fierce beating.

Maybe because what Milton said was based on fact, or maybe just because they were in a perilous situation, the Wandering Wizard didn’t want to risk making their situation even more dangerous over an accidental internal conflict.

In any case, there was no loss of control in the scene that the Rat Wizard had imagined.

However, the atmosphere in the room inevitably grew even tenser.

”No matter how good the original chairs are, they’re just wooden chairs... and now, we have the opportunity to sit on a chair crafted from gold and Mithril,” the Wandering Wizard spoke with an unusually calm tone, yet anyone could sense the excitement beneath that calm:

”Perhaps the members of the Moon Council haven’t forgotten their previous ideas. You always feel you are just one step away from the experimental results. But that single step is as vast as a chasm—without your own Albert, Chen Wen Yuan, or Yu Rui, you will never be able to cross that divide—not to mention, even if you succeed in your experiments, it won’t close the gap between you and the First University at all.”

”The Mage Alliance, even including the Demon faction, will never allow you to possess power beyond what is agreed upon.”

”The incident at Dark Blue Castle half a year ago is a very good example.”

As he spoke, the Wandering Wizard’s tone shifted, his words suddenly becoming much sharper: ”Speaking of which, after the last Dark Blue Castle incident, many Council members expressed their great dissatisfaction with those of you Moon families acting on your own behalf. Perhaps it was too lenient of me to only downgrade the rating of the Ghost Tribe’s institution to silver last time, letting you develop some kind of misconception.”

Duke Milton’s face darkened, but he didn’t react to the Wandering Wizard’s words, which were half-threat, half-enticement.

It was only when another voice sounded that he responded.

”Do not violate the Council’s rules.” This voice sounded hoarse and cold. Even in the midst of the winter’s chill winds, it made those who heard it shiver from a fear that seemed to emanate from the depths of their souls.

The speaker was the last member of this small team.

Unlike the other three members who showed their true faces, this last member was wrapped tightly in a black cloak from head to toe, even their eyes were hidden behind a pair of large black sunglasses—if they lay under a large tree, they could pass completely as the tree’s shadow, unnoticed by anyone.

As the tension in the area escalated, the Rat Immortal was about to make a joke to lighten the mood when suddenly, as if sensing something, its expression changed and it yelled, ”Cover your heads!”

Hearing its cry, the experienced companions immediately raised their hands decisively and clasped the backs of their heads.

Immediately following their movement, the last word of the Rat Immortal exploded in their ears, ”Scatter like mice!”

With the spell cast, its power unleashed.

”Whoosh!” A gust of wind howled through, and the four figures that had stood in the clearing vanished in an instant, as if the previous debate and discussion had been but an illusion.

Just a few seconds passed.

”Boom!”

A gigantic fox tail fell from the sky, smashing heavily into the enclosure built of Buddha’s belly bamboo, and in the blink of an eye decimated the little realm. Snowflakes whirled into the sky en masse, as if the entire world had been clogged with white.

”Whoosh...”

That massive fox tail, with a sweep, cleansed the entire space. Snowflakes fluttering about, bamboo branches and leaves scattered all around, and any residual magic fluctuations in the air, all disappeared without a trace with that single swipe.

”Thud!”

A tall figure draped in a Red Cloak descended from the sky, black high heels striking heavily into the soft snow, causing no sinking yet making a heavy sound as if the earth itself trembled a few times.

Su Shijun adjusted her cloak and, raising a hand, gently brushed a lock of hair beside her ear, silently staring in the direction where the four figures had vanished, her eyes filled with indifference:

”Little mice sure run fast...”

”But having touched my man, where do you think you can run to!”

...

...

Meanwhile, in the Silent Forest, the great escape was unfolding.

Inside the ’Sandbox World,’ Zheng Qing was still discussing the previously unsettled topic with Thomas.

”So you’re saying they are all acting unconsciously now, right?” Zheng Qing asked curiously, pointing at the Bull Head sitting under the tree with a naive smile, ”That Bull Head seems to be much smarter than the others.”

”Even though they are all ’Righteous Bodies,’ the more skilled the wizard in sorcery and the stronger the mana, the more ’vitality’ the Righteous Body can display... According to this principle, the person controlling that Bull Head must be a senior wizard... perhaps even a Big Wizard!”

”Why are you explaining so much to me?”

”Oh, it’s a simple choice,” Thomas replied with a hint of easiness, explaining in a light tone, ”Whether it’s completely dealing with those Righteous Bodies or breaking out of the ’Sandbox World,’ you can’t be of much help. And it would be very unsafe to let you wander around without supervision. So Mr. Yu asked me to follow you and answer any questions you might have... Not everyone gets such an opportunity. Your companions are still struggling in that ’Dreaming Spell’.”

Sensing the young cost student’s unease, the teaching assistant added, ”No need to worry, at times like this, it’s better to sleep with peace of mind than to be anxious and on edge... We’ve already cast spells of warmth and wind protection on them; sleeping here is almost as good as sleeping on a bed with an eighteen-layer swan feather mattress.”
