Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 59: Chapter 48: Mutual Pinching (Part 2)

Nick Zeller’s voice turned cold, ”But Lawrence has never been an ordinary child. I thought you knew this better than I do.”

Gabrielle Winters seemed a bit startled, as if she was lost in some distant memory and couldn’t utter a word.

Nick Zeller glanced at her quickly, somewhat worried she’d get upset. He quickly softened his tone and continued, ”Don’t you remember what happened when she was little? Why did we move from the big city back to this small place? Have you forgotten all that?”

”...No, I haven’t forgotten.” Gabrielle Winters looked a bit dazed, but insisted, ”Lawrence is just an ordinary child. She’s no different from other kids. It’s just...she’s a little unlucky, that’s all.”

”No, she’s actually quite lucky, luckier than most kids.” Nick Zeller patted her hand firmly, ”With me here, her luck will always stay good.”

Gabrielle Winters came to her senses, looking gratefully at Nick Zeller, ”Big brother, it’s really thanks to you. Otherwise, Lawrence and I... wouldn’t have survived more than ten years ago.”

”How could that be? With me, the Great Heavenly Master, here, how could there be no way for you and your child to survive? Look at us now, are we living any worse than anyone else?”

Nick Zeller propped his hands on his knees, striking a mighty pose, ”So let her continue to follow me in feng shui studies. What are you worried about? Why insist on her going to school alone?”

”All these years have passed, she only needs to go to school for the final exams. Do you misunderstand my relationship with Vice President Yen, or are you worried about Lawrence’s ability to study?”

Nick Zeller spoke with such conviction that Gabrielle Winters was almost persuaded by him.

At that moment, Lawrence Winters opened the door and walked in. Her cheerful voice instantly swept away the slightly suffocating atmosphere in the living room.

”Mom, Uncle, I’m back!”

”Lawrence is back.”

”Lawrence, come and sit down.”

Gabrielle Winters and Nick Zeller turned and said in unison,

Lawrence Winters cheerfully sat beside Gabrielle, resting her head on her shoulder, ”Mom, do you remember those unlucky things that happened when I was little?”

Gabrielle Winters’s heart nearly skipped a beat.

They had just been talking about Lawrence’s childhood, and here she was bringing it up herself.

”...I remember... Why did you suddenly think of those?” Gabrielle’s body was a bit tense as she reached up to pat Lawrence’s head.

Lawrence laughed, ”I was just at the airport with Yuan Ge to see Sister Xiao off, and on the way back, we ran into a group from the neighborhood.”

”Someone seemed to be one of our old neighbors from the old GAI. She was telling people about my childhood, asking if I’m still unlucky now!”

”Who is so gossipy? If I were there, I’d immediately go up and scold her!” Gabrielle was instantly furious.

She had spent so much effort to ensure that young Lawrence grew up healthy and normal like other children. How could she let people continue spreading baseless gossip?

”It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m totally fine now.” Lawrence shook Gabrielle’s shoulder, acting spoiled, ”Mom, don’t scare me. With Uncle and me doing feng shui all these years, haven’t we heard enough gossip? When have you ever seen me take it to heart?”

”Exactly,” Nick Zeller nodded with a grin, unfazed, ”Our Lawrence has been quite headstrong since she was little. I still remember when you were five, someone said some idle talk, and you walked two miles alone to stay at an orphanage...”

Recalling that misunderstanding, Gabrielle couldn’t help but laugh too, tapping Lawrence’s forehead, ”You’re the little spitfire. Neither mom nor uncle ever abandoned you, yet you were ready to abandon yourself!”

Lawrence had always had a stubborn streak, but it was never out of despair; it was a search for her own path.

”Mom...” Lawrence snuggled into her embrace, acting spoiled.

She looked up with complete trust, her big, bright eyes pure as a newborn ragdoll cat, soft, meaty, innocently naive, as if she would just meow any moment.

Nick Zeller knew Lawrence much better than Gabrielle did, realizing she wasn’t as pure and harmless as she appeared, but he didn’t mind this about Lawrence at all.

Why do people love ragdoll cats so much? — Because they are adorable!

Gabrielle Winters, no matter how fiery her temper, softened immediately at the sight of her like this.

Holding her daughter in her arms, she instantly made a decision, ”...Mom and Uncle will accompany you to the Capital City for university. In the last half year, study well and don’t worry about home.”

Nick Zeller’s mouth fell open.

He’d been trying for so long to persuade Gabrielle to let him accompany Lawrence to the Capital City, but she hadn’t agreed.

Then Lawrence just acted a little spoiled, and she immediately agreed without hesitation!

And she’s going too!

Nick was so delighted he couldn’t hide his smile, quickly saying, ”Great! Then, little sister, why don’t you just quit your job? We’ll go to the Capital City to start a company. Lawrence will need to study, and I can’t handle it all alone. Why not help manage the finances?”

Gabrielle had been working as a clerk and part-time cashier at a law firm in River City for these ten years, and she’d qualified as both a mid-level and certified accountant.

Lawrence was overjoyed, lifting her head from Gabrielle’s embrace, ”Really, really? Mom and Uncle are both going to the Capital City with me?”

Gabrielle nodded with a smile.

Lawrence jumped up and ran around the living room, ”Ah ah ah! This is great! It’s wonderful! Mom and Uncle are going to the Capital City with me!”

After running a few laps, she hugged Gabrielle from behind, ”Mom, can I live with you guys?”

Then she asked Nick, ”Uncle, where are you going to live in the Capital City?”

Nick laughed, ”The year you got into Yanda, I bought a small two-bedroom apartment near your school. Let’s stay there for now.”
