Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Kincaid waited until he had organized the announcement into confirmed facts, reasonable conclusions, and unanswered questions.

Then he sent Max a communication request.

Sovereign Consent opened a vertical window in Max’s office. Max sat behind his desk reviewing a construction estimate. Anna occupied the chair beside him with a clipboard balanced across one knee.

”You look happier than the last time you called.” Max said.

”I have better news.”

Max set the estimate aside. ”That would explain it.”

”The Elder God gathered the remaining minor gods.” Kincaid began. ”Exactly ninety-six champions passed the latest challenge.”

Max glanced at Anna. ”Fewer than I expected.”

”Each seven-seal dungeon held three teams and produced one winner. I do not know how many challenge dungeons were created or whether every champion sent a team. Ninety-six is the confirmed result.”

”What happens next?” Anna asked.

”Not immediately another challenge. We have six months.”

Max’s posture changed. Two weeks had forced him to assemble, equip, and train the elite unit at an uncomfortable pace. Six months allowed actual development.

”That is better news.” He said.

”There is more. The Elder God explained part of the purpose behind the challenges. A threat is approaching the Prime Universe.”

Max’s relief disappeared without becoming panic. ”What kind of threat?”

”He did not say. He specifically withheld its name, origin, and strength because we cannot act on that information yet.”

Kincaid shared the rest carefully. Dungeons needed to endure attacks, adapt to unfamiliar enemies, and field forces capable of operating beyond their own territory. The recent challenge tested expeditionary ability. The next stage would compare champions directly.

”Ninety-six divided into pairs gives forty-eight.” Max said.

”That is the apparent direction. The Elder God did not promise that exact format or disclose future rounds.”

”But one dungeon against another is likely.”

”Yes.”

Max looked toward the wall displaying the elite unit’s training reports. ”Then the team needs more than practice against creatures I control.”

”You have time to arrange that.”

”Enough time to do it properly.”

Anna added a note to her clipboard. ”Does the warning mean the threat will arrive in six months?”

”No. The Elder God said it approaches and its path has not fully formed. He gave no arrival date.”

Kincaid could have speculated. He chose not to. Max had enough real information to guide development without treating a guess as prophecy.

”You said there was better news.” Max said. ”A threat to the universe does not qualify.”

Kincaid laughed before he could prevent it. The sound surprised all three of them.

”No, it does not. The Elder God formally accepted the remaining minor gods as apprentices.”

Max smiled. ”Then congratulations.”

The sincerity stopped Kincaid for a moment. ”Thank you.”

”I know that is what you wanted when this started.”

”It was.” Kincaid looked at the new bond visible only through his divine senses. ”I expected it to feel like an ending. It feels more like the point where the work begins.”

”Most promotions do.” Anna said.

”You speak from experience?”

”From watching Max create more work every time something succeeds.”

Max did not object. ”She has evidence.”

The ease of the conversation felt unfamiliar. Kincaid had spent months thinking of Max as his champion, his obligation, the person he wronged, and the one person whose success could determine whether Kincaid’s own future continued. None of those descriptions left room for friendship.

He did not name the change now. Naming it would make the moment self-conscious. He simply allowed the conversation to continue without retreating behind formal language.

”The Elder God also awarded each champion a reward tailored to the defining trait of the dungeon.”

Max leaned forward. ”Corathen?”

”That was my first assumption.”

”It is difficult to find something larger.”

”Larger, yes. Unique, no. Country-sized inhabited dungeon territories have existed before.”

Anna raised an eyebrow. ”Often?”

”No. But enough that the Elder God did not consider it the feature that most distinguishes your dungeon.”

Max waited.

”Resurrection.”

His expression shifted from curiosity to complete attention.

Kincaid opened the reward record. The symbol the Elder God showed him appeared within the communication window.

’Afterlife Authority’

It allows the Dungeon Master to create and govern environments connected to established resurrection effects. Does not grant resurrection to an ineligible creature. Does not remove existing costs, recovery periods, or other requirements. Construction and operation remain subject to applicable dungeon costs.

Max read it once. Then again.

”An environment connected to resurrection.” He said.

”The Elder God described your use of the resurrection buff as unprecedented in scale and structure. The authority gives you a way to develop that trait rather than merely increasing a number.”

The reward transferred.

Max’s attention turned inward. A new section opened within his dungeon interface. Kincaid could not see the options, but he saw the excitement arrive across Max’s face.

Anna recognized it too. ”How large is the idea?”

”Potentially?” Max asked.

”That answer already worries me.”

”Substantial.”

”That means expensive.” Anna mumbled.

Max rose from his desk and began moving through menus only he could see. He asked DC whether the authority required one afterlife or allowed several. The answer made his smile widen. His next question concerned how the created environments connected to a person’s resurrection timing. Then he asked whether different conditions could direct eligible souls to different places.

Kincaid could not hear DC’s side of the exchange. Max’s reactions told him the answers were useful.

”You already know what you want to do.” Kincaid said.

”I know what I want to try first.”

”Which is?”

Max paused.

Anna looked from him to Kincaid. ”He is deciding whether explaining it will ruin the surprise.”

”It will.” Max said.

Kincaid felt an unexpected urge to argue that he was a god and therefore entitled to advance notice. He resisted it because the claim was both untrue and exactly the kind of pompous behavior Max had disliked from the beginning.

”Then tell me when it exists.”

”You will be one of the first.”

The promise was small. Kincaid accepted it as the friendship it implied.

Max returned to his chair long enough to share the questions he was not keeping secret. The new authority did not change who could resurrect. It did not shorten cooldowns automatically. It did not allow him to bring back people protected by another system or create Eternal Souls without paying the existing cost. It provided a framework in which eligible souls could exist between death and restoration, subject to rules Max designed and funded.

That was enough to transform several parts of his dungeon.

”The Elder God chose well.” Kincaid said.

”I agree.”

Max sounded pleased rather than falsely modest. The reward fit the dungeon, and there was no reason to pretend otherwise.

They spoke about the six-month interval next. Max intended to continue training the elite unit, but not to build the entire dungeon around a challenge whose rules remained unknown. Corathen, Sanctuary, Hizon’s Undercity, and the public levels would continue developing for their own purposes.

”That is consistent with the warning.” Kincaid said. ”Preparing only for the last test is not preparation for an unfamiliar enemy.”

”If the next challenge is one-on-one, I will learn more once an opponent is assigned.”

”I will investigate what I am allowed to investigate. I will tell you when information is confirmed.”

”I know.”

Max’s immediate trust made the promise feel different from earlier obligations.

Kincaid had once treated helping Max as repayment. The debt had been paid. He wanted to help now because Max’s survival mattered beyond what it could earn him.

Anna closed her clipboard. ”Are you allowed to visit now that you are formally an apprentice?”

”Not physically through Sovereign Consent. This remains a communication connection. Other permissions may expand, but I will not assume them.”

”Good.” Max said. ”Because I do not want you accidentally appearing inside the office and knocking over the furniture.”

”I am capable of arriving without striking a desk.”

”That sounds like a claim we should test from a safer room.”

Kincaid laughed again.

When the conversation ended, the vertical window closed. Max immediately opened a private project and assigned the first afterlife planning work to himself. He concealed its details even from the ordinary construction queue.

Anna watched him do it. ”You know keeping it secret means I will notice every time you disappear to work on it.”

”I am not keeping it secret from you.”

”That is better.”

Max showed her the first rough concept.

Her expression changed from suspicion to interest, then to the same excitement he had tried unsuccessfully to hide.

Neither spoke the concept aloud.

Max closed the private concept when Quin requested his attention from another part of the dungeon. The ordinary work had not paused because the Elder God delivered a reward. A shipment needed routing, a portal required maintenance, and Corathen’s administrators had submitted requests that could not wait for Max to finish imagining new realms.

That helped contain his excitement.

He assigned the afterlife project no public construction zone and authorized no spending yet. Before creating anything, he needed to understand how a soul entered, what happened if resurrection became available while the person refused to leave, and whether an afterlife environment could be damaged by those occupying it. DC answered some questions and marked others as dependent upon the design.

Max recorded the unresolved points instead of buying an impressive first version and repairing its logic later.

Anna read the list over his shoulder. ”Six months does not mean you need to finish this before the next challenge.”

”I know.”

”You said that quickly.”

”Because I already know you are right.”

She accepted the answer. The reward affected resurrection, but the elite unit, public levels, Corathen, and the rest of the dungeon still required attention. Max could develop the new authority without making everything else wait.

Kincaid sent one final written note after the communication ended. It contained the exact Elder God language concerning preparation and the coming threat. No commentary had been added.

Max stored it with the challenge records.

Earlier, he might have searched every sentence for what Kincaid was withholding. This time he believed Kincaid had told him everything he knew and clearly labeled everything he did not.

The dungeon had six months before the next challenge. For once, the deadline felt distant enough to build toward instead of merely survive.
