Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian accepted his first infiltration contract after reading the limitations twice.

The locksmith waited while he did it.

[Objective: Remove one black customs ledger from the secured records office at Southbank Bonded Warehouse Three. Replace it with the supplied copy.]

[Permitted access: Warehouse Three, adjoining customs offices, roof, loading galleries, and service passages required to reach the ledger.]

[Prohibited: Theft of unrelated property. Deliberate injury to warehouse employees. Visible damage that reveals the exchange before the client acts.]

[Completion: Deliver the original ledger with its binding and pages intact.]

The prepared copy rested on the locksmith’s workbench.

It duplicated the worn black cover, brass corners, and municipal stamp visible in the client’s description. Its pages contained ordinary customs entries copied from legitimate records. Anyone opening it to check one shipment would find nothing alarming. A detailed audit would reveal that months of seized goods had vanished from its history.

The original contained those missing entries.

”Who owns the goods?” Lucian asked.

”Several people believe they do.” the locksmith said. ”Your contract concerns the book, not the dispute that follows.”

Lucian read the limitations again. ”If the book has been moved out of Warehouse Three?”

”Return and report. The access permission does not follow it into another building.”

”If someone is carrying it?”

”Do not take it from a person.”

The boundaries were narrow enough to understand.

Lucian signed the acceptance line and placed the false ledger inside a flat case beneath his coat.

He spent the remaining daylight learning the weight of the substitute.

The false ledger was heavy enough to pull one side of his coat lower if he carried it carelessly. Lucian practiced removing it from the flat case without catching the brass corners on the lining. He marked the page where the binding opened naturally and memorized the scratch beside the clasp. If he reached the original, he could not spend several minutes deciding how it had been positioned before the exchange.

The locksmith provided no map beyond the client’s old floor plan. Lucian purchased a current fire-inspection diagram from a municipal copy office and compared it to the contract record. One exterior stair had been removed. A new document lift connected the counting rooms to the inspection floor. Neither change identified a path into the secured office, but both warned him that the building continued changing after the client last saw it.

Lucian selected clothing that belonged near the canal district without copying a customs uniform. A stolen uniform would make every person who saw him remember an employee who did not exist. A dark laborer’s coat, work gloves, and ordinary boots allowed him to cross Southbank without claiming authority he could not support.

Southbank’s bonded warehouses stood beside a canal wide enough for two freight barges to pass. Municipal offices occupied the road side. Loading galleries faced the water, where cranes moved sealed cargo from boats into inspection bays without allowing it to enter the city first.

Warehouse Three operated late but not all night.

Lucian entered the public customs office before its evening closure. He requested a standard import form, asked which window handled declared salvage, and paid the copy fee. No one questioned why another adventurer needed paperwork in a city where three districts interpreted the same cargo rules differently.

He left with the form and a complete view of the public floor.

The secured records office occupied the second level behind the chief clerk’s desk. A narrow hall connected it to the warehouse. Clerks carried active ledgers across that bridge rather than moving them through the public waiting room.

Lucian walked around the building.

Route Memory held the doors, windows, roofs, canal stairs, crane supports, and patrol turns as he saw them. He found no single unguarded entrance. He did find a sequence of ordinary weaknesses.

Warehouse employees used an exterior stair to reach the loading areas. The lower door remained guarded while cargo was present. The upper gallery crossed beneath a crane rail and approached the roof within eight feet. A maintenance ladder connected the roof to the rain channels. The door below those channels opened into a service corridor outside the records office.

The route required climbing, timing, and one locked door.

Lucian returned after the warehouse’s final scheduled barge departed.

The road remained busy. Southbank diners served the night crews, and freight wagons waited for inspections that would begin at dawn. Lucian crossed among laborers without using a Skill until he reached the canal stairs.

Quiet Step carried him beneath the loading areas.

He climbed the crane support while a warehouse patrol crossed the road side of the building. The iron framework gave him handholds but placed him above black canal water. He moved with his weight close to the beam and waited when a lantern turned beneath him.

The light passed.

Lucian crossed the upper rail and reached the roof.

The maintenance door looked exactly like the one in the plan supplied with the contract. Its lock did not.

The original mechanism had been a multi-sink four-pin cylinder. Someone had replaced it with a narrow dwarven lock fitted inside the same outer plate. A second pressure bar ran beneath the latch. Forcing the cylinder would release the bar and ring something inside the corridor.

Lucian examined it in the darkness.

Returning because a lock differed from a year-old building plan would keep him alive. It would also end an infiltration before he attempted the skill his class was meant to perform.

He inserted a fine pick and felt the first pin.

The mechanism gave him less information than the cheap practice locks in the locksmith’s shop. Its springs resisted at different angles. The pressure bar shifted whenever the cylinder moved too far without the latch following.

Lucian withdrew the pick.

He did not begin guessing.

He placed two fingers against the outer plate and tested the handle with less force than its own weight. A faint movement traveled through the metal. The first pin pressed against the cylinder. The pressure bar remained still. The second pin transferred tension toward the alarm line.

Lucian repeated the movement until Route Memory held more than a map of streets.

He began remembering the lock’s internal sequence.

The system responded.

[Skill unlocked: Mechanism Sense]

[Mechanism Sense]

[Touching a mechanical structure allows the user to perceive the movement, tension, and relationship of its connected components. Detail increases through sustained contact and relevant knowledge. The Skill does not operate the mechanism.]

The lock did not open.

Lucian felt it.

The pins became separate points of tension beneath his fingers. The hidden pressure bar extended toward a thin wire behind the frame. He could not see the point where the wire joined the alarm, but he knew which movement would pull it.

He worked the cylinder without making that movement.

The third pin set. The fourth resisted until he changed the angle of the pick. The latch withdrew while the pressure bar remained in place.

Lucian opened the door.

The service corridor beyond was empty.

He closed the lock without resetting the alarm and continued toward the records office. Broken Outline softened the connection between a shadow near the maintenance door and the figure moving beside the inner wall. Quiet Step kept his boots from carrying through the closed clerk rooms.

The records-office door was unlocked.

The cabinet named in the contract stood along the far wall. It contained five active customs ledgers arranged by warehouse number.

Warehouse Three’s black book was missing.

Lucian checked the shelf without disturbing the other records. An empty space remained between Warehouse Two and Warehouse Four. Fresh dust marked where the brass corners had rested.

The contract allowed him to search the adjoining office.

The chief clerk’s desk held current manifests, seal stamps, and a route log. The target did not appear there. A narrow transfer slip lay beneath a drying rack.

[Warehouse Three irregular seizure review. Ledger transferred to Deputy Inspector Marel. Counting Room Two.]

The counting room stood across the upper gallery inside the warehouse.

Lucian looked through the office window. The enclosed bridge was dark. Beyond it, inspection bays extended through three levels of open interior. Stacked cargo formed aisles beneath suspended walkways. Counting Room Two occupied a glass-fronted office above the central floor.

The black ledger lay on its desk.

Lucian could see the brass corners from the records office.

He crossed the bridge.

The warehouse had not become less guarded because the public windows closed. Two night watchmen stood near the main doors. Another walked the loading area. A clerk checked the seals on cargo scheduled for release in the morning.

Lucian moved above them.

The upper gallery offered cover until the last thirty feet. Counting Room Two projected from the wall with open space beneath it. Its door faced the gallery. Its windows faced the warehouse floor. Anyone crossing the final section would be visible from below.

Broken Outline could make one movement harder to remember. It could not turn an exposed bridge into an empty one.

Lucian waited for the clerk to enter an aisle of stacked cargo. He crossed while the watchman at the doors looked toward the loading area.

The counting-room door carried a standard lock.

Mechanism Sense showed no alarm connected to it.

Lucian opened it and entered.

The original ledger matched the false copy closely enough that the client had either seen it or paid someone who had. Lucian compared the municipal stamp, spine wear, page thickness, and brass corners. The forged book would survive a casual inspection.

He removed it from the flat case.

The freight bell sounded below.

Lucian stopped before touching the original.

The main warehouse doors opened. A line of wagons entered beneath escort, carrying municipal seizure marks and armed customs guards. The night watchmen began clearing the central inspection bay.

”Deputy Inspector is on his way.” someone called. ”Open Counting Room Two. He wants the books ready before the cargo is unloaded.”

Lucian looked at the ledger in front of him and the prepared copy in his hands.

The upper gallery no longer offered an empty route back.

He replaced the false ledger inside its case and crossed to the counting room’s document lift. The narrow platform descended through the floor to the clerks’ station below. Its brake, chain, and bell line ran through an iron housing beside the wall.

Mechanism Sense traced them.

Lucian released the platform without ringing the bell, stepped onto it, and stopped the descent halfway between floors.

He moved from the platform to the support beams beneath the counting room.

The lift continued down without him.

Deputy Inspector Marel entered the warehouse with six guards. Two climbed toward Counting Room Two while Lucian remained above the inspection floor with the false ledger beneath his coat and the original still on the desk overhead.
