Five Knots found the salvage contract on their third morning in Ironcloud.

The board described one damaged cargo vessel, an evacuated crew, and a recovery window expected to last until the mountain winds changed. The payment exceeded anything available on the ordinary creature removal lists. Half came from recovering the cargo. The rest depended upon whether the vessel’s lift assembly survived.

Tessa read the danger notice beneath it.

[Hull position unstable.]

[Remaining lift unreliable.]

[Salvage team must provide rigging, mechanical assessment, structural repair, route reading, and emergency piloting.]

Those five requirements might have been written for them.

They took the posting to the contract counter.

The owner arrived before the clerk finished verifying their party record. Dorran Keldrum was a broad-shouldered dwarf with an iron gray beard divided into three short braids. His coat carried the mark of a freight company rather than a salvage company.

”You won the Sanctuary race.” He said.

Tessa recognized a question hidden inside the statement. ”We did.”

”On miniature craft around a protected course.”

”Also true.”

Dorran placed a route map across the counter. ”This is not a race. I own the cargo and the damaged ship. My salvage tender has its own pilot and crew. I need five people who can work on the wreck without making things worse than they already are.”

Kesh studied the marked mountain. The wreck lay along an eastern spur where two wind channels met above a deep ravine.

”When did it go down?” he asked.

”Yesterday afternoon. The crew abandoned before dark. The ship held through the night, but the weather station expects the upper current to turn before tomorrow morning. At that point, the vessel will tumble down the mountain.”

Min read the vessel record.

The Copper Finch was a compact freight airship older than anything in the dealership. One of its two lift engines had failed. The second operated at reduced output before the captain lodged the hull against a narrow stone shelf. The balloon frame remained inflated, but three sections had lost pressure.

”What is the cargo?” Orin asked.

”Machine parts, sealed medicine, and replacement pump components for four mining settlements. Nothing alive. Nothing explosive.”

Belda examined the tender’s equipment list. ”Your lines can hold the full vessel?”

”The lines can. The anchors depend upon where you place them.”

Five Knots accepted.

Dorran’s salvage ship left Ironcloud less than an hour later.

The Stonehook was built around a reinforced deck, two powered winches, and a forward crane that folded against the hull during flight. Its crew consisted of Dorran, a pilot, two riggers, an engine operator, and three deck workers. Five Knots did not displace any of them.

They occupied the forward rail as the vessel climbed from Ironcloud’s middle docks.

The city passed beneath them in terraces and bridges. High warning beacons opened a route toward the eastern mountains. Once the Stonehook crossed the final marker, the protected traffic lanes ended. Peaks replaced docks on both sides.

Kesh kept Dorran’s route map open.

The first wind channel carried them north along a cliff. The second cut sharply upward through a gap hidden from the lower approach. Dorran’s pilot knew both, but Kesh watched how the ship moved through them. The air did not behave like an open road. It accelerated against stone, turned around ridges, and fell into spaces where sunlight still appeared calm.

They saw the Copper Finch after the Stonehook entered the upper channel.

The damaged vessel hung at an angle against a dark mountain shelf. Its bow rested above the stone. Its stern extended over the ravine. One folded mast had caught between two rock projections and prevented the hull from sliding farther.

The remaining balloon pulled upward while the weight of the cargo pulled backward.

Neither force had won yet.

The Stonehook approached from below. Its pilot held the salvage ship outside the wreck’s shadow while Dorran examined the shelf through a viewing lens.

”No one boards until we have two independent lines.” He said.

Belda joined his riggers at the forward crane.

The first anchor crossed above the Copper Finch and locked into bare stone beyond its bow. The second attached to the wreck’s central frame. Belda inspected the tension from three angles before approving either line for weight.

Tessa, Kesh, Min, Orin, and Belda crossed together.

The deck tilted beneath them. Cargo crates had broken free near the stern and gathered against the lower rail. Every step toward them changed the creak traveling through the hull.

Tessa stayed near the central control station.

”We do not move cargo until Min knows what lift remains and Orin knows what is holding us.”

No one argued that the valuable crates should come first.

The captain’s emergency record remained clipped beside the controls.

Tessa read the final entries while the others began their inspections. The first lift engine had reported uneven rotation before the shaft failed. The surviving stabilizer then showed a correction that never reached the rudder. The captain used the shelf because the controls told him the stern had leveled when it continued falling.

”The instrument record faults out after the first failure.” Tessa said.

Min answered through the engine-room tube. ”The stabilizer sensor still draws power. That explains why. It is reporting its own position instead of the ship’s.”

Tessa marked every unreliable gauge. If the Copper Finch moved again, she would steer from Kesh’s wind readings and Orin’s reports rather than trust the display built into the station.

Belda inspected the vessel’s remaining lines before using any of them. Two had been stretched during the crash. A third crossed a sharp hull edge and would fail under a heavy transfer. She tagged them red and replaced the most important section with rope brought from the Stonehook.

Dorran watched the separate work converge around the same decision.

The freight owner had hired Five Knots because their records listed the required skills. He had not known whether the five would wait for one another when cargo worth more than their annual earnings sat within reach.

Min entered the engine compartment with Orin.

The failed lift engine had not merely stopped. Its primary shaft had bent and torn two mountings from the surrounding frame. The second engine still produced enough force to reduce the ship’s weight, but its cooling line leaked and one stabilizer continued drawing power without responding.

”I can keep the second engine running.” Min said. ”I cannot promise how long if it stays at the current load.”

Orin inspected the torn mountings. The damage continued into the stern supports. ”The failed shaft pulled the hull out of alignment. If the cargo leaves from one side, the stern twists.”

Above them, Kesh traced ribbons of powder released into the air.

The powder rose along the cliff, turned across the bow, and descended toward the stern. A stronger current waited beyond the ridge. It had not reached the wreck yet.

”The forecast turn is beginning.” He said. ”We need to move quickly.”

Belda established four internal lines between the cargo deck and the central frame. They would keep the loose crates from shifting while the party worked. The remaining Stonehook crew secured two transfer baskets between the vessels.

Dorran crossed after the third external anchor held.

”Assessment?”

Min described the surviving engine. Orin showed him the damaged frame. Kesh pointed toward the powder drifting faster over the stern.

Dorran looked at the cargo.

”Can we remove it?”

”Not all at once.” Tessa said. ”We transfer equal weight from each side and keep the stern supported.”

The first pairs of crates crossed safely.

Five Knots worked within the salvage crew rather than trying to take it over. Belda controlled the internal rigging. Orin watched the hull. Min kept the lift engine stable. Kesh called changes in the wind. Tessa decided when the combined information required everyone to stop.

The medicine left first. Balanced machine parts followed.

The Copper Finch rose half an inch against the shelf as its weight decreased.

That movement should have reduced the strain.

Instead, the folded mast holding the wreck shifted between the rocks.

Orin felt the change through the deck.

”Stop transfer.”

The next basket remained suspended between ships.

He reached the stern rail and examined the mast. Its metal foot had not lodged naturally. The crash folded it backward, driving the top between the rocks like a wedge. The entire ship rested partly upon a support designed to carry sails, not a loaded hull.

Removing cargo changed the angle holding the wedge in place.

”The ship will come free if the bow rises another foot.” Orin said.

Dorran looked toward the remaining cargo and the damaged engine. ”Then we support the stern before taking more.”

The Stonehook repositioned its third line.

Belda guided the anchor point toward the Copper Finch’s rear frame. The tender’s winch took tension slowly. The stern stopped pulling as hard against the mast.

Min returned to the engine room.

She shut down the useless stabilizer and redirected its power into the remaining lift assembly. The engine’s output increased. Its temperature rose with it.

”We have enough lift to free the mast.” She said. ”Not enough to fly.”

Tessa planned around that distinction.

The Stonehook would take the stern weight. The remaining engine would raise the bow. Belda would pull the bent mast clear before it caught against a different part of the frame. Once the ship hung on the salvage lines, they could transfer the remaining cargo.

The plan required less than a minute of increased engine output.

The mountain wind changed during that minute.

Kesh saw the powder reverse above the bow.

”The wind has shifted and is now coming from the ridge.”

Dorran’s pilot increased the Stonehook’s engines. The ship shifted outward to keep the two vessels from striking each other.

Min raised the Copper Finch’s lift.

The bow moved.

Belda released the mast from the rocks. The stern dropped onto the salvage line exactly as planned.

Then the new wind struck both ships from above.

The Stonehook fell ten feet before its pilot recovered. The line carrying the Copper Finch’s stern snapped tight. One anchor held. The second tore through an already damaged section of the wreck.

Metal crossed the deck in a spray.

Five Knots reached cover behind the central frame. One of Dorran’s riggers was thrown against the rail. The Stonehook’s forward crane bent beneath the sudden load, and its pilot turned away before the wreck pulled the tender into the mountain.

”Release the stern line!” Dorran ordered.

The winch operator cut it.

The Copper Finch moved free of the shelf.

Its remaining balloon and one damaged lift engine slowed the fall without stopping it. The bow turned toward the ravine. The Stonehook remained above and behind, fighting its own damaged crane and the wind between them.

Five Knots, Dorran, and one injured rigger remained aboard the wreck.

The last anchor line dragged across the stone and pulled loose.

Nothing connected the two ships.

Tessa reached the Copper Finch’s control station as the mountain shelf rose past the side of the falling vessel.

”Kesh, find us air that goes up. Min, keep the engine alive. Belda, secure everyone who cannot hold themselves. Orin, tell me which part of this ship can survive steering.”

Dorran looked from her to the ravine below.

He did not repeat any of the orders.
