Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The alarm had nothing to do with Lucian.

He knew that before the second bell.

The sound came from the front courtyard rather than the ward lines protecting the private rooms. Boots rushed toward the public entrance. A guard shouted for the gates to be sealed, followed by an order to search the grounds.

Lucian remained beside the reinforced cabinet.

Whatever happened outside had changed the estate’s movement, but it had not exposed him. Leaving the counting room without the cylinder would turn a complication into failure.

He rested two fingers against the cabinet lock.

The connection between the case handle and the weight plate resolved more clearly than it had moments earlier. The skill did not explain the mechanism. Lucian understood it because he had spent years learning how locks, springs, and counterweights behaved. Mechanism Sense allowed him to perceive how the hidden parts connected.

He removed a slim packet of tools and a coil of fine wire.

The cabinet door opened one fraction at a time. Lucian held tension on the hidden line while feeding wire around the case handle. When the gap became wide enough, he suspended the case from above and slid a prepared weight onto the plate beneath it.

The alarm remained still.

He opened the case.

The genuine cylinder rested in black cloth beside two sealed documents. Lucian replaced it with the Hidden Ledger’s duplicate. He did not take the documents. He adjusted the lining, closed the case, and lowered it onto the weight plate while withdrawing his counterweight.

The difference was too small to trigger the mechanism.

Lucian closed the cabinet and returned the lock to its previous position.

Only when his target was secure did he investigate the disturbance outside.

Voices carried from the connecting corridor.

A guest had brought an unregistered servant into the estate. The servant had entered an upstairs bedroom and attempted to steal a jewel case while its owner attended the sale. A maid encountered him leaving. He struck her, ran into the courtyard, and tried to climb the wall before a guard pulled him down.

The thief was alive, loud, and insisting the guest knew nothing about his plan.

The household had no reason to suspect a second intruder.

Lucian returned to the document lift. The estate was now locked from the outside, and guards were checking rooms near the courtyard. The internal passages remained crowded with servants attempting to obey conflicting orders.

He climbed the shaft to the private floor.

Two guards passed the storage recess before he emerged. Neither opened it. They were searching for the jewels that the thief had ditched before being caught, not signs of entry from the canal.

Lucian crossed the private passage after they turned the corner. He entered the linen room, secured the door behind him, and opened the shutter.

The bridge patrol had stopped to watch the commotion at the front gate.

Lucian descended the maintenance ladder, closed the window protections, and slipped into the canal. The current carried him beyond the estate while guards continued searching the wrong side of the building for a thief they had already captured.

No one saw him leave.

He did not return directly to the Hidden Ledger. He changed clothing in a rented storage room, crossed two crowded night markets, and checked his route for pursuit. Only after he was certain no one followed did he enter the locksmith’s shop through its ordinary front door.

The locksmith closed the shutters.

Lucian placed the brass cylinder on the counter.

”Problem?” The man asked.

”The cylinder had been moved from the study to a counting room. It was held in a portable case connected to a weight alarm. The replacement is in the case. The cabinet and estate wards remain intact.”

”We heard Melden’s estate locked down.”

”A guest’s servant tried to steal jewels and assaulted a maid. He was caught in the courtyard.”

The locksmith examined Lucian’s clothes for blood, torn fabric, or any sign of a hurried escape. He found none.

”Did anyone become aware of you?”

”No.”

The cylinder remained sealed while the locksmith verified its markings. He did not open it in the shop.

”Then the assignment is complete.”

Lucian received a purse heavy enough to justify the preparation and risk. It was not enough to make him careless about the next contract. The locksmith also placed a flat, dark token beside it. One side carried the outline of a closed book. The other bore a symbol that looked different depending on the angle of the light.

”You are no longer on probation.” He said. ”The mark gives you access to the Ledger’s houses in Caldris. It does not protect you from consequences if you bring trouble to one.”

The locksmith led Lucian down the familiar stairs beneath the shop.

They passed the counters and contract boards Lucian had already been shown. The difference became apparent when the locksmith continued beyond them and approached a black door at the rear of the hideout.

During Lucian’s earlier visit, the door had remained locked.

The locksmith pressed his mark against a metal plate beside the frame. Several mechanisms shifted inside the wall before the door opened.

”Probationary members and clients use the main room.” He said. ”Full members have access to restricted contracts and equipment. Your mark will open this door from now on.”

The room beyond was smaller and quieter than the public portion of the hideout. Three contract boards occupied one wall. The first offered assignments from clients willing to pay for experienced infiltrators. The second contained work commissioned by the Hidden Ledger itself. The third held notices shared by Ledger houses in other cities.

A clerk sat behind a reinforced counter at the far end. Shelves behind him held specialized tools, ward-disrupting materials, forged identification tokens, and containers designed to conceal objects from ordinary searches.

Lucian approached the first board.

The available work paid considerably more than the assignments he had seen as a probationary member. It also involved greater consequences. One notice requested entry into a merchant’s private records room. Another required replacing a shipment manifest before customs inspected it. A third offered payment for determining how a noble moved money between several supposedly unrelated businesses.

”These clients receive more scrutiny before their contracts are accepted.” The locksmith said. ”That does not make them honest. It means the Ledger has confirmed that the assignment is genuine and that the promised payment exists.”

Lucian examined the internal board.

Those notices focused on protecting the organization. One sought information about guards watching a Ledger controlled warehouse. Another required identifying who had sold the location of a safehouse. A third requested the quiet recovery of documents taken from a dead member.

”Internal work earns more than coin.” The locksmith said. ”Complete enough of it successfully, and people within the Ledger become willing to trust you with their own contacts.”

Lucian understood the value immediately. Money purchased equipment and lodging. Trusted contacts could provide identities, routes, and access that coin alone could not secure.

He moved to the board containing assignments from other cities.

Most required travel and offered little information until accepted. One requested a skilled infiltrator for work in a coastal fortress. Another sought someone capable of entering an occupied mine without alerting its guards.

Lucian moved to the next notice without giving it further consideration.

The clerk behind the counter registered Lucian’s mark and explained the restrictions on the equipment shelves. Common tools could be rented against a deposit. More valuable items required an approved contract. Anything damaged or abandoned during an assignment had to be repaid unless its loss directly served the Ledger. Some missions required leaving tools behind to frame others.

Lucian inspected the available tools but selected nothing.

The equipment was useful. It was not automatically better than the familiar tools with which he had just completed a difficult infiltration without leaving evidence behind.

The clerk also assigned him a private storage compartment. It was too small for weapons or bulky goods but sufficient for documents, money, spare clothing, and objects Lucian did not want connected to his rented room.

Lucian placed most of his reward inside.

The locksmith watched him close the compartment. ”You are not taking another contract tonight?”

”I spent three days preparing for the last one.” Lucian said. ”I want to review what is available before committing to the next.”

The locksmith nodded.

Full membership gave Lucian better opportunities. It did not require him to accept the first one placed in front of him.

He left the house by a different route and emerged inside a closed bathhouse three streets from the shop.

Melden would wake the next morning believing his cylinder remained secure. The captured servant would explain the alarm. The household guards would find no broken ward, damaged lock, or missing object connected to Lucian’s path.

It was the kind of success no one outside the Hidden Ledger would ever know occurred.

Melden’s guards spent the rest of the night questioning servants and searching guest carriages. The captured thief eventually admitted he had entered with an appraiser’s assistant and acted alone. By morning, the household treated the incident as embarrassing but resolved.

No one ordered a locksmith to examine the rear window. No one compared the dust around the study desk. No unexplained footprint, displaced ledger, or missing coin suggested a second presence.

Lucian had not escaped because another intruder saved him. He had completed the assignment so cleanly that the other man’s failure never touched it.

The Hidden Ledger’s appraiser opened the genuine cylinder in a shielded room. Lucian watched through a narrow pane while the locksmith and two senior members verified its contents. Thin sheets covered in compressed writing unrolled from an internal spindle. A cipher turned apparently ordinary trade accounts into names, dates, and payments.

”Melden did not create this.” Lucian said.

”No.” The locksmith replied. ”One of ours did, then attempted to sell it before disappearing.”

”You left that out.”

”It did not change your assignment.”

The answer showed Lucian another boundary of membership. The Ledger provided what an operative needed, not every fact it possessed. He could accept that as long as withheld information did not create unnecessary danger.

”Did the missing member know about the replacement?”

”He was dead before we approached you. Melden purchased the cylinder through two brokers.”

The senior members removed the sheets and destroyed the spindle’s original cipher key. One retained the false cylinder’s matching key so they could interpret any messages Melden sent based on its contents.

Afterward, Lucian spent more time exploring the Ledger house. The contract counter separated work by access level. His new mark opened two boards that had been hidden during probation. One offered sanctioned work for merchants and private clients. The other contained internal assignments protecting the organization itself.

Rules appeared beside both. Members could not accept competing contracts, expose another member’s identity, or use a Ledger house to hide from consequences created by unauthorized crimes. Disputes went before three arbiters whose names were not posted.

At the appraisal counter, Lucian asked what kinds of goods would be refused.

”Anything tied to children, slaves, or a killing we did not approve.” The appraiser said. ”Anything so distinctive that every guard in Caldris is searching for it. Anything carrying a curse you neglected to mention.”

”Stolen religious objects?”

”Depends on the god and how vindictive the priests are.”

The answer was practical rather than moral. The Hidden Ledger was not pretending to be lawful or good. It maintained limits because those limits kept the organization functioning.

At the contract board, several members came and went without speaking to him. One removed a courier notice. Another studied three jobs, copied none, and left through a side passage. The house offered access, not companionship.

That suited Lucian as well.

Two days later, the locksmith received confirmation through a market contact. Melden had opened the duplicate, verified several names he already knew, and arranged his first extortion message. He had not discovered the exchange.

The Hidden Ledger could now control which false trail he followed and identify the buyers willing to act on it. Lucian’s work had done more than recover stolen information. It had converted Melden’s threat into a source of intelligence.

The flawless assignment would not make the next one easy. It had proved he could prepare well enough that difficulty never became visible.
