Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Renn Ruskell refused to meet Rod’s party twice.

The first refusal came through the Northspan Exchange clerk who carried their message upstairs. The second arrived in writing.

[I conduct no Ruskell family business. Return whatever my father sent without involving me.]

Rod read the line beside the freight counter.

Stonecross occupied the meeting point of two mountain roads and one regional portal. Freight houses filled the lower terraces. Dwarven warehouses stood beside inns built for human caravan crews, and every public square contained scales large enough for loaded wagons.

Renn worked on the third floor of the largest exchange in town.

Rod’s party had reached Stonecross after replacing what they lost at the ancestral stronghold when they died. Rod carried a serviceable axe instead of the weapon Helmar now possessed. Dirk carried a borrowed bow in place of the one left in the stronghold. Nessa had fitted the returning silver focus into a plain new staff and replaced her field case and the ordinary supplies hidden inside it. The equipment allowed them to travel and fight. It did not replace the written proof left beside their bodies.

The ring remained with Lana.

Midnight sat on the counter beside her, watching freight clerks pass without showing interest in any of them.

”He thinks Tharic sent us.” Dain said.

”He thinks refusing us will keep him out of it.” Nessa replied.

Rod turned the written refusal over. ”We tell him Tharic is dead. If he refuses after that, we decide how long we can remain without leading Helmar’s people to his office.”

The clerk carried their third message.

Renn came downstairs himself.

He was younger than Tharic but old enough that gray had entered the hair above both temples. He wore a freight assessor’s coat with reinforced elbows and carried three measuring tools on his belt. No Ruskell crest appeared on his clothes.

He looked at the five adventurers, then at Midnight.

”You said my father died.”

”At the family stronghold.” Rod answered. ”Helmar’s guards killed him while we tried to get him out.”

Renn’s expression did not collapse. It closed.

”My uncle sent notice that armed adventurers stole a family document, attacked the household, and abducted my father during an illness. His notice does not say anyone died.”

”Helmar hired two groups of assassins to kill Tharic and recover this.”

Lana placed the ring on the counter.

Renn recognized it immediately.

His hand moved toward the dark green stone and stopped before touching it.

”My father never removed that.”

”He gave it to my familiar after we became trapped inside the gate.” Lana said. ”Helmar watched the cat swallow it. When I died, Midnight disappeared. He returned the ring after I resurrected in the Sanctuary.”

Renn looked at the familiar again.

The cat stared back.

”Where is the evidence that Helmar hired anyone?”

”In Helmar’s stronghold.” Nessa said. ”It was inside my field case when I died. Ordinary belongings do not return from Corathen with us.”

”Then you have a story and my father’s ring.”

Rod accepted the accusation. ”We also have his last message.”

That reached Renn more sharply than the ring.

”What message?”

”He said to tell you Helmar betrayed every branch, not only his. He said to give you the ring. And he said he was wrong to let your last argument become four years.”

Renn looked away from them.

The exchange continued operating around the counter. Clerks weighed documents. Porters called freight numbers from the loading doors. No one nearby knew that the dwarf beside them had just been told his father died inside a family fortress.

”Our last argument was not about Helmar.” Renn said.

”He did not tell us what it was about.” Rod replied.

Renn finally touched the ring.

He turned it until the worn crest faced upward. The setting fit his hand, but he did not put it on.

”He wanted me to return to the branch business.” Renn said. ”Helmar was consolidating contracts, and my father believed someone from our line needed a seat at the stronghold. I told him every Ruskell who moved behind those walls eventually spoke with Helmar’s voice.”

Renn had left for Stonecross rather than accept the position. Tharic called the decision abandonment. Renn promised to return when his father wanted a son instead of another family representative.

Neither wrote after that.

”Now you want me to believe Helmar killed him for a ring no one understands.” Renn said.

”Helmar called it a key.” Lana said. ”He intended to kill Tharic and then remove the other branches that could challenge him.”

Renn closed his fingers around the ring.

”If I keep this, he comes here.”

”He may come whether you keep it or not.” Dain said.

Renn looked toward the exchange doors. ”I need time.”

Rod did not demand an answer at the counter.

Renn arranged a private meeting room on the second floor. Rod’s party entered with him. Midnight remained near the window while Renn read the copy of Tharic’s signed statement that Lana reconstructed from memory. It lacked the original wax mark and proved only what the party claimed he wrote.

They told him everything that happened from the first ambush through the stronghold gate.

Renn asked practical questions.

Which hand had Helmar lost? Where had Tharic stood? Who heard him name Renn? What did the assassins carry? Which family guards hesitated before the private force attacked?

The answers remained consistent because the party did not need to create them together.

Renn still did not decide.

”I could send the ring back through the exchange.” He said. ”Insured, sealed, with witnesses. Helmar receives what he wants without another fight.”

”He killed Tharic after the ring disappeared.” Nessa said. ”Giving it to him does not change what you know.”

”He does not know what I know.”

”He knows your father had an estranged son.” Dirk said. ”Tharic told us. Helmar heard part of the conversation before his guards attacked.”

Renn walked to the window.

Midnight’s ears turned toward the street below.

Lana joined the familiar’s senses.

Three men had entered the square separately. One stood beside a freight board without reading it. Another took a place near the portal office. The third spoke to a porter and showed him a drawing.

The drawing showed a black cat.

”We have visitors.” Lana said.

Renn’s decision had not remained private long enough for him to make it.

Rod moved everyone away from the windows. Dirk used an interior stair to reach the loading area. Dain remained with Renn while Nessa checked the exchange’s second exit.

There were more than three.

Two waited inside the rear freight yard. Another had taken a table in the public dining room across from the stairs. None wore Ruskell colors.

The man in the square entered first.

He presented a sealed family order to the lower clerk and requested custody of stolen Ruskell property carried by five wanted adventurers. The order named Helmar as the family authority. It did not name Renn.

The exchange supervisor refused to search customers without a Stonecross warrant.

The man thanked him and left.

The people at the rear moved at the same time.

One climbed the freight stairs. The other blocked the yard exit. The watcher in the dining room entered the exchange and approached the second-floor stair from below.

They were not trying to obtain lawful authority.

Dirk marked the climber through the loading bay slats. His borrowed bow lacked the balance of the weapon lost at the stronghold, but Far Mark still belonged to him. He fired through the man’s coat and pinned the sleeve to the stair rail.

The failed quiet approach became a direct attempt. Knowing they were exposed, Helmar’s people no longer concealed themselves.

Rod met the person coming from below. He took the first strike against his shoulder and used the movement it granted to drive the attacker away from the stairs.

Dain kept Renn inside the meeting room. Nessa moved to the rear hall and blocked the second route with a barrier. Lana sent Midnight through the ceiling beams to find the remaining agents before they reached another entrance.

The attackers focused on the meeting room.

They did not threaten clerks or seize random freight. One attempted to break Nessa’s barrier. Another threw a hooked line toward Rod and tried to pull him away from the stairs. The man Dirk pinned cut himself free and continued upward with one arm bleeding.

Stonecross security arrived before the agents reached Renn.

The people outside scattered. The three inside withdrew toward different exits. Dirk disabled the nearest without killing him. Rod held another against the wall until the exchange guards placed restraints around his hands.

The captured man carried Helmar’s household payment mark inside his coat.

Renn saw it.

He also carried a copy of Renn’s work schedule, the address of his rented home, and instructions to search every black-cat familiar accompanying the party. The order did not describe a lawful recovery. It directed the agents to take Renn alive only if doing so did not risk losing the key.

Stonecross security sealed the papers before questioning him. Renn could no longer tell himself the attack had followed the adventurers without including him.

He knew the mark from legitimate family contracts. Helmar could claim the man stole it or acted without orders. He could not make the attack disappear from the exchange records or explain why a stranger carried Renn’s description before Renn announced possession of the ring.

Stonecross security offered protected rooms while it investigated.

Renn refused to remain in the same town where Helmar’s people already knew his workplace.

”Ironcloud.” He said after the questioning ended. ”Helmar can influence family holdings and isolated roads. He will not attack openly inside the capital.”

Ironcloud also held older clan archives, property records, runic histories, and artificers capable of identifying the ring’s construction. If any place could explain what the key opened, it was the dwarven stronghold.

The scheduled passenger routes were the obvious way there.

Rod rejected them.

”Five Knots.” He said.

Lana recognized the name immediately. The five adventurers had spent months around the Sanctuary’s Skyyard and won the most recent Grand Airship Race. Rod’s party knew them by reputation rather than friendship, but that reputation mattered.

”They went to Ironcloud to buy an airship.” Dirk said. ”Everyone in the Sanctuary has been talking about it.”

”They care about flying more than Ruskell family politics.” Rod replied. ”Helmar has no reason to have a connection to them, and they came from the Sanctuary instead of one of his trade houses.”

Renn worked at a freight exchange. Finding whether a newly registered crew accepted charters required one message.

The reply arrived from Dorran Keldrum’s office before evening.

[The Sixth Knot is available for private passenger work. Crew: Five Knots. Departure subject to route and threat review.]

Renn read the name twice.

”You trust people you have never met?”

”I trust what they have spent months trying to become.” Rod said. ”That is more than we know about any other pilot, unless you personally know somebody.”

Renn placed his father’s ring inside a new inner pouch.

He authorized the exchange to begin negotiating the charter.
