Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The ruined city changed when the seven seals joined.

Walls that had stood for centuries folded into the streets. Bridges extended from broken towers, forming a route toward the central platform. Other passages sealed behind slabs of rising stone. The dungeon did not allow the qualifying team to wander or hide.

It directed them toward the gate.

The first guardians appeared before the elites crossed the second bridge.

They were smaller than the Colossus and too numerous to fight individually. Stone figures climbed from windows and roof openings, their bodies incomplete until pieces of the surrounding ruins attached themselves to them. Some carried no weapons. Others tore rails from the bridge and used them as clubs.

Aderic kept the team moving.

The elf ranger cleared the route ahead. The spellblade and dwarf shieldthane controlled the rear. Without the orc bulwark, the shieldthane could not anchor both sides of a narrow approach. The ward mage placed short barriers to divide the pursuing guardians rather than trying to stop all of them.

Dagna carried two seals, so she remained near the center beside the field healer. Siv moved between positions, warning of threats before they reached the carriers.

The team no longer fought to preserve strength for an unknown number of objectives. The gate was visible ahead.

Their enemies only needed to delay them long enough for something else to go wrong.

The insectoid survivors appeared on a parallel roof, waiting for an opportunity to take advantage of.

The mottled scout supported the larger survivor with the missing arm. Both watched the three seal carriers. A narrow bridge could place them in Max’s path if they crossed immediately.

The scout took one step toward it.

The wounded insectoid caught his shoulder.

They exchanged a rapid series of clicks. The scout looked at the nine-person formation, the guardians surrounding it, and the sealed routes behind them. Even if he stole one disk, he would need the other six. The attempt would achieve nothing except death.

They withdrew into the ruins.

Aderic did not order the ranger to fire.

The third team had lost the challenge. Killing its last members served no purpose.

The path descended into a canyon formed by two collapsed avenues. Guardians poured onto the upper edges. The orc shaman brought loose stone down behind the elites, blocking the largest group while leaving enough space for the team to pass.

The route opened into the starting district.

The circular platform waited exactly as they left it. Seven depressions surrounded the stone panel. Behind it stood a doorway that had not existed when they entered.

No enemies guarded the platform.

That concerned Aderic more than another attack.

”Hold outside.” He ordered.

Dagna and the ward mage examined the sockets. The runesmith compared their shape to the disks while the mage traced the dormant connections beneath the stone.

”The seals fit.” Dagna said.

”The gate receives power from all seven.” The ward mage added. ”Nothing leads away from the sockets except the door.”

”A false exit?”

”Possible. Not indicated.”

The first stone guardians reached the edge of the district.

Aderic made the decision.

The seals were inserted one at a time. Dagna placed hers first, then the shieldthane. Aderic retained the final disk until every member of the team stood on the platform.

He pressed it into the last depression.

The stone panel lowered.

White light filled the doorway.

SEVEN SEALS CLAIMED.

FINAL GATE REACHED.

PASS.

Aderic crossed first. The remaining eight followed without speeches or hesitation.

The door closed before the nearest guardian reached the platform.

In Crag Mountain, Max watched the viewing panel turn white.

The nine elites appeared inside the training hall where the challenge portal had first opened. Their armor was damaged, and several leaned upon one another. The field healer still carried the bulwark’s broken shield.

The revived orc waited with the ten elite members who had remained behind.

He possessed no memory of anything after Varkesh’s horn entered his chest. He knew the team had won only because the return message appeared in the hall.

The dwarf shieldthane crossed the distance between them and struck one fist against the orc’s shoulder.

”You missed the easy part.” He said.

The bulwark looked at the injuries covering the returned team. ”Clearly.”

No one laughed for long. The field healer gave him the broken shield.

”We would not have taken the seals without you.”

Max waited until the team accounted for every member and the healer confirmed that no injury required immediate help beyond what their own magic could provide. Anna and Quin stood beside him. The remaining elites crowded the edge of the training floor without interrupting the returning unit.

”The system marked the challenge as passed.” Max said. ”Kincaid has not contacted me yet.”

Aderic removed his damaged helmet. ”Varkesh’s team is gone. Two members of the third team survived, but they had no seals when we reached the gate.”

Max looked at the revived bulwark. ”And we lost one.”

”For the remainder of the challenge.” the orc said. ”Not permanently.”

Max did not need the rule explained. He also did not treat survival afterward as making the death meaningless.

”You held their leader in place when the rest of the team needed it.” He said. ”That is why everyone else returned together.”

The orc accepted the acknowledgment with a short nod.

Max dismissed the unit to recover after Aderic delivered the essential report. A full review could wait until everyone ate, slept, and replaced damaged equipment. The challenge had tested their ability to operate without him. Dragging them immediately into hours of explanation would not improve the result.

The training hall emptied gradually. Dagna remained long enough to place the recovered equipment on separate tables. The challenge had returned what the team carried through the gate, including damaged armor and the bulwark’s abandoned shield. It had not returned consumables left behind in the ruined city or equipment destroyed beyond recovery.

The runesmith found deep cuts in the shieldthane’s armor, residue from the tower mechanisms on her tools, and a fracture running through Aderic’s shield. Each told part of the challenge more accurately than a clean victory notice.

Anna directed food to the adjoining hall. The elites who remained in Crag Mountain had eaten while watching, but most joined the returning group anyway. They had spent the entire challenge unable to help. Sitting with the nine who completed it and the one who returned early was the first useful thing they could do.

Quin waited until Max and Anna stood apart from the others.

”Varkesh offered cooperation twice.” He said. ”Both offers concealed an attack.”

”And Aderic judged both without needing us.” Max replied.

”That is the important part.”

Max agreed. The elite unit existed to go where he pointed and solve problems beyond the routines of any one dungeon level. If they required him to interpret every stranger or choose every path, they would only extend his reach without becoming a force of their own.

The challenge had also exposed weaknesses. The team carried only one primary field healer. Losing that person early would have changed every later decision. The runesmith and ward mage solved several mechanisms together, but no third member possessed comparable knowledge if both were occupied. Max recorded the issues for later training without deciding that every weakness required purchasing another specialist.

Twenty people could not contain every answer. They needed to recognize what they lacked and adapt before the absence became fatal.

Far beyond the dungeon, Kincaid’s observation chamber dissolved around its four occupants.

The apprentices appeared on separated terraces before the Elder God.

Many spaces stood empty.

Kincaid could not determine the original number by counting the gaps. The gathering place changed to fit those summoned, and no marker identified champions whose teams failed. He recognized fewer apprentices than before the challenge began, but still far more than a handful.

Khorren appeared several terraces away. His pale sensory mane lay flat with exhaustion. Ithara stood beyond him with her translucent fins folded close. Namarik occupied a lower position, his red tendrils so tight that they nearly disappeared against his head.

Kincaid did not know which of their champions passed.

The Elder God raised one hand.

Names appeared across the air.

They were not numbered. They did not form a ranking.

Each identified a champion whose team carried seven seals through a final gate. Max Clarkson’s name appeared among them.

The list extended beyond Kincaid’s immediate field of view. He could have counted if the Elder God left it in place long enough. The names vanished as soon as every apprentice had an opportunity to locate their champion.

No total followed.

”The listed champions have passed.” The Elder God said. ”You will receive notice before the next challenge.”

An apprentice on the western terraces asked when that would happen.

The Elder God disappeared without answering.

The gathering remained silent for several breaths.

Namarik’s tendrils loosened. His champion had passed. Khorren gave Kincaid one deliberate nod, confirming the same. Ithara’s fins remained folded, but one of her three eyes closed briefly when Kincaid looked toward her. Relief rather than defeat.

All four champions continued.

None of them knew what the challenge measured beyond the ability to claim seals.

Kincaid returned to his own room and sent Max a communication request.

Sovereign Consent opened a vertical window in Max’s office. Kincaid could see Max behind his desk.

”The Elder God confirmed that you passed.” Kincaid said. ”The number of remaining champions was not announced. No date or rules were provided for the next challenge.”

Max leaned back slightly. ”That is everything?”

”Yes, I will contact you when that changes.” He did not offer theories about the Elder God’s purpose. He possessed none supported by evidence.

The communication closed after they said goodbye.

Kincaid remained alone after Max’s image vanished. He recorded the Elder God’s exact announcement and nothing more. The other apprentices would begin trading theories within hours. Some would claim the seal dungeons measured combat. Others would insist they measured betrayal, endurance, or obedience.

Every theory could point to one portion of the challenge and ignore the rest.

He stored the record and closed the observation archive.

Max looked through the office window toward the training grounds. The elite unit had passed its first deployment. Nine completed the challenge without dying inside it. One returned by a different route, while the other ten had waited in Crag Mountain.

The next time he sent them beyond his reach, he intended for all of them to come home together.
