Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The core hunters had not found the dungeon core.

Max disliked how much they had learned while failing.

Their recovered maps covered the long table in his office. Anna had arranged them by source rather than accepting the hunters’ own conclusions. Public Sanctuary maps occupied the left side. Corathian route records filled the center. Hand-drawn observations of staff movement, private portals, and Max’s appearances lay to the right.

Quin stood at the far end with the portal tool’s examination report.

The hunters had built their theory from three events during the challenge. Max appeared after the invaders crossed the final sealed boundary. A restricted transit ring connected that district to somewhere the army never reached. Quin arrived through routes ordinary visitors could not use.

None proved the core had been near the ring.

Together, they showed which parts of the dungeon reacted when someone approached protected infrastructure.

”They marked the time between a boundary alert and your arrival,” Anna said.

Five entries appeared beside Quin’s name. The estimates varied according to where he had been fighting when Max sent him.

Quin read them. ”The shortest time was not mine. Max opened the route closer on that attempt.”

”They could not know that.” Max said.

”The next group may.”

That was the value of the recovered maps. Cassor’s operation had failed, but future hunters could purchase copies, compare the errors, and begin closer to the truth. Moving the core after every suspicious visitor was not a defense. It was a reaction that could expose another pattern.

Max closed the buyer list and addressed the presence beneath the dungeon’s systems.

”DC, what rules limit where I can place the dungeon core?”

The answer appeared above the maps.

[A dungeon core may be concealed, relocated, guarded, trapped, or placed behind conditional access. At least one valid route must make the core possible to reach.]

[The route may be difficult. It may require overcoming dungeon-created opposition or satisfying discoverable conditions. The core may not be placed where no permitted action can ever reach it.]

Max read the rule once.

”So a sealed chamber with no entrance is prohibited.” He noted.

Anna moved the conditional access language into their notes. ”That still leaves difficult doors, provided the condition can be discovered and satisfied.”

Max nodded. ”The route has to exist as more than something we claim exists.”

That removed the easiest answers and made the useful ones clearer.

A core hunter should not be able to move from a public street to the core through one stolen token. Routes could require progress through several areas, each protected differently. A group prepared for physical barriers might reach a magical one without the tools needed to continue. Someone bypassing a guarded gate could still encounter an environment that made carrying a captured core difficult.

Delay mattered only if the dungeon noticed the attempt.

Anna created a second category for detection. Boundary alarms could distinguish routine staff traffic from damaged seals, invalid tokens, altered portals, and repeated route testing. The core’s path did not need to announce itself to every person who touched the wrong door. It needed to tell security when several ordinary mistakes formed a deliberate approach.

The core hunters had already demonstrated why separate reports were dangerous. A map question in one office, tunnel question in the Undercity, and portal watch in the Sanctuary appeared harmless until someone connected them.

The next design had to connect its own warnings faster.

”Misleading routes can buy time.” Max said.

Quin examined the current private network. ”Only if they behave like real routes. A corridor that exists to end at a blank wall teaches people what to ignore.”

Max moved obvious dead ends out of consideration.

He could use branches that led to actual administrative spaces, defensive positions, storage areas, or alternate exits. A hunter following the wrong route would still find a reason it had been protected. That made the path believable without requiring every branch to approach the core.

Environmental barriers offered more variety.

Water, heat, cold, pressure, unstable footing, narrow passages, open distances, and areas hostile to particular kinds of magic could all slow different intruders. Max had used environmental problems throughout his levels. The core route could use them with a different purpose. An instance needed to remain entertaining and completable by the intended party. A core defense needed to remain possible while giving the dungeon every reasonable advantage.

They did not choose an environment.

Choosing too early would force every later defense to serve one setting.

Max added extraction to the plan.

Reaching a core and removing one were separate problems. The challenge invaders had searched for a route while expecting a final battle. Professional hunters would also prepare a container, an escape path, and methods for preventing the dungeon from reclaiming what they carried. A defense that protected only the inward journey could fail after the core left its chamber.

Routes could change behind intruders. Portals could close once an unauthorized object crossed them. Narrow passages could become easier to enter than to leave while carrying something protected in both hands. None of that made the core impossible to reach. It made capture different from escape.

Anna added continuous tracking to the detection category. ”If someone crosses the first protected boundary, we should not need a second clerk to recognize him at the next one.”

The core hunters had exploited the separation between offices. The new route could preserve a single active alert from the first deliberate breach until security ended it. Max would still require confirmation before treating a confused employee as an attacker. Once an instrument attempted to map a restricted threshold, the later barriers should know what happened.

They considered decoys.

A false chamber could contain a protected object that resembled a core at a distance, convincing route records, and defenders who treated it as important. Quin saw value in forcing hunters to reveal their best tools against the wrong objective.

”Do not make the decoy perfect.” He said. ”If there is no way to discover the difference, it becomes luck instead of defense.”

Max agreed. A patient hunter should be able to find evidence that a false route was false. The purpose was to reward careful defense of the actual core, not make the valid path indistinguishable from an arbitrary guess.

They left the decoy as an option rather than a decision.

Relocation offered another approach. Max could move the core after a breach or rotate which valid route reached it. That would prevent one stolen map from remaining useful forever. Constant movement would also disrupt his own defenders and create transfer moments a watcher could identify.

”Move it because the plan calls for movement.” Anna said. ”Not every time someone asks a strange question.”

Max placed scheduled or condition-based relocation beneath long-term options. He wanted a system his people could operate without reacting emotionally to every suspicious visitor.

The guardians created the larger problem.

Max already possessed powerful defenders. Sigmund and the Fey Nights inhabitants protected the first level. The Orc Chief’s forces belonged to the Highlands. Dwarven and elven defenders served Level Three. Kildra commanded Dread Fort. Hizon’s subordinates guarded his own dungeon and businesses. Corathen’s armies defended their country.

Moving any of them could protect the core while weakening the place they left.

That had happened during the challenge. Quin was the only defender Max could send from one emergency to another without stripping a level of its command structure. Even then, Quin could occupy only one front at a time. And while Max had a good relationship with Quin, the swordsman was a contracted adventure. It was entirely possible for him to leave after the contract ended.

”Fixed defenders make the dungeon strong where they belong.” Quin said. ”The hunters mapped your response because I was the same mobile answer every time.”

Quin did not make the observation sound like a complaint. He had responded wherever Max sent him and would do so again. The limitation came from relying on one person for every problem that crossed level boundaries.

Max opened an elite force proposal.

The unit described there would not replace ordinary level defenders. Its members would have no permanent gate, settlement, fortress, or public role requiring them to stay in one place. They would train for rapid movement, containment, pursuit, rescue, and attacks against threats that did not fit an existing level’s responsibilities.

Some would guard Max or Anna personally when needed.

Some would protect the core route.

All would be available for whatever problem Max assigned.

”The unit needs people who cover different failures.” Anna said. ”Another durable fighter will not replace long-range detection or magical defense.”

Max looked at the empty roster. ”We build around functions, then evaluate the individuals.”

They listed functions instead of names. A durable front. Long-range detection. Magical defense. Pursuit. Healing. Control over confined spaces. Movement across difficult terrain. The ability to operate when normal dungeon communication was disrupted.

Quin added independent judgment.

”If every member waits for a complete instruction, they will arrive quickly and stand in the wrong place.” He said. ”It will be best if there is someone on the team who you can trust to make decisions in the heat of the moment.”

Max placed that requirement above raw level.

The force would need eternal souls or another reliable way to return after death. It would need a training area and authority to use restricted routes without teaching those routes to everyone it fought. It would also need a command structure that remained useful if Max lost contact with them while they were caring out his orders.

The mobile force also needed a relationship with Sanctuary security. Gnome investigators could recognize patterns without being the people sent into a hostile corridor. The new unit could respond without taking over routine enforcement. Quin proposed joint drills in which the guards received incomplete reports and had to decide whether they were facing an intruder, a trapped employee, or a damaged route.

”Speed without identification creates another danger.” He said. ”A force trained only to arrive will attack the first person it sees.”

Max added restraint, rescue, and evidence preservation to the training requirements. Capturing Cassor had produced maps and buyer records because the gnomes contained the court instead of turning it into a battlefield. A core-route defense needed the power to kill a genuine attacker without treating death as its only successful result.

The maps stayed on the table through the afternoon. Max marked which current routes required immediate changes and which should remain under observation so escaped hunters would not learn what worried him most. Anna prepared the security requirements. Quin identified places where a responding force would become trapped behind the same barrier it came to defend.

By evening, the core remained where it had been.

The difference was a new project containing the first requirements for detection, delay, layered opposition, and a mobile force capable of responding without emptying another part of the dungeon.
