Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The clerk met Renn at the entrance to the restricted foundation archive shortly after the morning bells.

She had replaced the plain gray coat she wore at the public counter with a dark blue archive mantle. A bronze chain disappeared beneath its collar, and three narrow keys hung from her belt. Two guards waited beside the sealed door behind her. Neither showed any interest in Rod’s party until the clerk checked Renn’s authorization tablet and looked at Midnight perched on Lana’s shoulder.

”The familiar stays with its summoner.” She said. ”Weapons remain peace-bound while you are inside. You may copy permitted records, but nothing leaves this floor without being examined.”

Renn turned the ring on his finger. ”How much did you find?”

”Enough to justify the request. Not enough to answer your question.”

The door opened onto a broad corridor lined with numbered stone doors. The archive had none of the dust Renn expected from a place holding records older than the current Ruskell stronghold. Warm air moved through narrow vents near the floor. Dwarven clerks pushed carts between workrooms while small rune lights followed them overhead.

The clerk led them to a private reading room. Three document cases waited on the central table, each secured by a different seal.

”The workshop mark on your ring belonged to Dorrik and Sons.” She said. ”They produced specialized locks, ward housings, and control mechanisms. They closed one hundred and eighty-seven years ago. Most of their ordinary accounts were destroyed after the legal retention period. Foundation work was preserved because it involved permanent construction.”

She opened the first case.

The papers inside did not identify the ring. They showed a commission for a fitted control key built around a green stone provided by the client. The measurements matched the hidden shaft beneath the ring’s setting. The commission had been placed by a Ruskell holding company Renn had never heard of.

”Ash Ridge Consolidated.” He read.

”A legal shell.” The clerk said. ”It held land and equipment without displaying the family name. The registry dissolved it eighty-two years ago.”

Rod leaned over the copy without touching it. ”What did it own?”

”That is where the record becomes difficult.”

The second case contained the company’s registration, several tax notices, and a transfer ledger. Entire groups of pages had been removed before the archive received the material. The remaining entries showed payments for excavation crews, reinforced doors, ventilation equipment, and warded storage containers. None listed a delivery address. A reference number appeared beside each expense, but the index that explained the number was missing.

Renn read the dates twice. The work had continued for nine years.

”This was not one locked room.” Dirk said.

”No.” The clerk agreed. ”Whatever they constructed required a substantial labor force. The records were deliberately divided among several companies. Ash Ridge purchased the materials. Other firms hired the workers and transported the equipment.”

She opened the third case.

At first, it appeared unrelated. It contained archive-access logs from the years before the records were moved to the restricted floor. One name repeated across the pages.

Helmar Ruskell.

He had requested the Dorrik workshop files nine years earlier. Two months later, he had examined the Ash Ridge registration. He returned four times over the following year, each time requesting a different collection connected to dead Ruskell companies.

”He knew about the key before he began hunting my father.” Renn said.

”He knew there was something to find.” Lana corrected. ”We still don’t know when he learned your father had the key.”

The clerk pointed to a notation beside Helmar’s final visit. ”He asked for the supporting survey index. The archivist recorded that the index was already absent.”

”Did he take it?” Rod asked.

”There is no evidence that he did. The removal could have happened decades earlier. There is also no evidence that he did not obtain the same information somewhere else.”

Renn’s expression tightened. The evidence did not reveal what the ring opened, but it destroyed the last possibility that Helmar had acted out of ignorance or sudden greed. He had spent years tracing the same hidden construction. By the time he hired assassins, he knew what he intended to claim.

The party spent the next several hours following the companies named in the surviving records. Most trails ended in dissolved partnerships or properties sold so many times that their original purpose had been lost. One led to a Ruskell freight office still operating in Ironcloud.

Renn recognized the manager’s name.

”Darron Ruskell is my father’s second cousin.” He said. ”I met him twice when I was a child.”

”Would he help Helmar?” Nessa asked.

”I don’t know.”

That answer followed them out of the archive.

The Ruskell freight office occupied three levels beside a cargo rail in the western mountain. Renn sent a written request from the protected lodging rather than appearing at its door. Darron answered within an hour and offered to meet in a public dining hall under Ironcloud security.

He arrived with his eldest son and no household guards.

Darron was a thick-waisted dwarf with iron-gray hair and a merchant’s habit of studying everyone before he sat. His gaze settled on Renn’s family resemblance, moved to the ring, and remained there.

”Tharic is dead?” He asked.

”Yes.” Renn said.

”And Helmar arranged it?”

Renn placed a copy of the recovered letter on the table. Darron read it without speaking. His son shifted uneasily when he saw Helmar’s seal.

”A copied letter proves little.” The younger dwarf said.

”It was taken from Helmar’s confidant inside the family stronghold.” Lana said.

”According to outsiders who escaped after Tharic died.”

Darron folded the copy. ”Gerrik. Enough.”

The son obeyed, but his suspicion remained.

Darron admitted that Helmar had spent the last several years gathering control over smaller Ruskell branches. Debts were purchased through intermediaries. Contracts moved to companies loyal to the ancestral stronghold. Family members who resisted found shipments delayed, credit withdrawn, or old disputes reopened.

”He has not broken Ironcloud law where anyone can prove it.” Darron said. ”That is not the same as being innocent.”

He agreed to contact three other branches on Renn’s behalf. They met separately over the next two days.

One branch offered records and protected storage. Another refused to become involved but promised not to tell Helmar that Renn was in the city. The third insisted Helmar remained the legitimate head of the ancestral line and urged Renn to surrender the ring before more blood was spilled.

Renn left that meeting convinced they had wasted their time.

He was wrong.

Before sunset, a message left the third branch office aboard a private courier lift. It reached a Ruskell factory near the northern docks and traveled out of Ironcloud on a fast merchant ship.

Midnight watched the courier depart from a roof across the rail line. The cat could not read the sealed message, and following an airship beyond the stronghold was impossible. Lana nevertheless marked the branch as compromised.

Darron supplied something more useful. His oldest property ledgers contained references to three companies from the archive documents. All had transferred equipment through an obsolete Ruskell depot on Ironcloud’s lower terraces. The depot records listed no final destinations, but the cargo weights, dates, and air-route charges survived.

Kesh and Tessa joined them that evening to examine the routes. Five Knots had not planned to become involved in another Ruskell investigation, yet no one else in Rod’s group understood old dwarven flight records as well.

”These charges were calculated by distance band.” Kesh said. ”The destination was more than four hundred miles from Ironcloud but less than five hundred and fifty. Mountain tolls place it somewhere east or northeast.”

”That covers a great deal of territory.” Dirk said.

”Less than you had this morning.” Tessa replied.

The manifests described excavation equipment, warded containers, replacement airship parts, and enough preserved supplies to support a permanent crew. Deliveries continued long after the original construction ended.

One line concerned Lana more than the others. A shipment of blank household seals had traveled with the ventilation equipment. Blank seals were not useful for construction. Properly cut, they could create orders that appeared to come from any branch possessing the correct press.

”Helmar may have inherited them.” Renn said.

”Or found them while searching the same records.” Lana replied.

The archive clerk agreed to examine the serial marks. She returned with a register showing that the seals were commissioned for temporary supervisors at a remote family worksite. All were supposed to have been destroyed when the project ended. No destruction certificate had ever been filed.

Rod added the detail to the growing list of dangers. They were no longer looking only for hired blades. Helmar could produce documents that passed a quick inspection, place orders through extinct companies, and use relatives who believed they were defending the family.

Renn asked the clerk whether the restricted files could be copied in full.

”Not the access logs.” She said. ”You may receive certified extracts concerning your own family interest. The private requests of other archive users remain protected unless a court orders disclosure.”

”Helmar’s name is the reason we know his interest predates the attacks.”

”And I have allowed you to read it because it is directly relevant to a credible threat. That does not make the archive yours to empty.”

Renn accepted the boundary. He requested certified copies of the construction commissions, property transfers, and every shipping record the archive permitted. The clerk marked the omissions so no one could later claim Renn had altered the gaps himself.

When the group returned to the protected lodging, Dain organized the copies by date across the dining table. Nessa created a separate list of names. Dirk compared the old routes to modern maps while Midnight slept on the one chair no one needed.

The work lasted past midnight.

At one point, Renn found his father’s name in an inheritance ledger. Tharic had accessed none of the hidden company records. Whatever he knew about the ring had come through another source or not at all. The discovery brought Renn no comfort. His father had carried an object Helmar studied for years without understanding why it placed him in danger.

”He tried to give it up.” Renn said.

Rod knew what he meant. Tharic had intended to surrender the ring inside the ancestral stronghold, hoping to stop the killings. Only Midnight’s stolen letter revealed that doing so would complete Helmar’s betrayal.

”He changed his mind when he learned the truth.” Rod said.

”After people had already died protecting him.”

”That responsibility belongs to the person who sent the assassins.”

Renn folded the inheritance page and returned it to the proper stack. He did not answer, but he stopped staring at his father’s name.

Then, twenty-two years ago, the records stopped.

Renn placed the last manifest beside the archive copies.

Helmar had searched for the same companies thirteen years later.

”He did not find an old family mystery and decide to chase it.” Renn said. ”He has been working toward this for years.”

Rod looked at the map Kesh had marked. ”And now he knows you are in Ironcloud asking the same questions.”

The protected lodging and the laws of the stronghold prevented Helmar from simply sending another band of assassins through the front door. They did not prevent him from reaching records first, misleading distant relatives, or waiting outside Ironcloud for Renn to leave.

The next morning proved the danger was already present.

An archive messenger delivered notice that someone had requested copies of Renn’s public filings less than an hour after his first visit. The request was legal. The listed buyer was a mineral broker with no obvious Ruskell connection.

Kesh recognized the broker’s company from a dock register. It leased space beside a freight office controlled by Helmar’s allies.

The discovery did not justify an arrest. It showed that Renn’s movements were being tracked through legitimate records by people careful enough to remain behind intermediaries.

Ironcloud was safe from a knife in a corridor. It was not safe from observation.

Renn gathered the copied manifests. They had finally found the beginning of a trail.
