Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Cassor placed the portal tool in the middle of Demer’s rented room and waited for everyone to understand what it was.

The object resembled two iron wedges joined by a braided silver cord. Fine markings covered the inner faces. When placed on opposite sides of an active threshold, the wedges could measure the path held between them. Given enough time, a skilled user might fix that measurement long enough to follow the same destination after the original portal closed.

It was not a weapon.

Using it on a restricted staff portal would still announce exactly what they wanted.

Demer did not touch it.

”Where did you obtain this?”

”One of our supporters brought it through the mountain entrance this morning.” Cassor said. ”The Sanctuary inspection identified it as a spatial instrument. That is what it is.”

”Did the inspection record your name?”

”It recorded his. He is not part of the group the map clerk saw.”

Demer looked around the room.

Only six hunters attended this meeting. The others were carrying out the assignments established two days earlier. Two walked public Undercity streets. Two had entered Corathen. Another pair divided its time among the Sanctuary’s administrative quarter, inns, and portal queues.

The smaller attendance did not soften the division between them.

Cassor’s three supporters stood behind him. Demer’s two associates remained near the window with the cases that held most of the group’s money, records, and specialized equipment.

”Explain the plan.” Demer said.

Cassor indicated a narrow service court on the Sanctuary map.

Administrative staff used a portal there during shift changes. The public could see the arch from the main road, although a low barrier kept visitors from entering the court. The destination never appeared. Gnomes presented staff tokens, crossed the boundary, and vanished before the portal closed.

”We place the wedges before the evening shift.” Cassor said. ”When the portal opens, four of us cross the court. One holds the route. The other three enter before the staff can close it.”

”And then?” Demer asked.

”Then we learn where it leads.”

”Inside a restricted administrative route, while carrying a device intended to defeat its access controls.”

”A route protected that heavily leads somewhere important.”

Demer studied the service court. Cassor had chosen it for access, not evidence. Employees entered because the dungeon needed to move them between work areas. The destination might be a records office, a supply corridor, or a staff dining room. It might connect to private infrastructure. Nothing they had learned made one possibility more likely than another.

”The moment you cross that barrier, every patient advantage disappears.” Demer said. ”The dungeon will know which route you targeted, who carried the instrument, and which people moved with you. If the portal leads nowhere useful, we gain nothing and lose every position we established.”

Cassor’s expression did not change. ”You established people in taverns and map offices. We came to destroy a dungeon, not become permanent visitors.”

”You came to destroy it. Most of us came for the core.”

”The core is the dungeon.”

”It is also worth more intact than everything else in this mountain combined.”

The disagreement no longer sounded temporary.

Cassor believed every day of public cooperation made Max stronger. Visitors trained inside the dungeon, spent money in its businesses, and accepted resurrection as proof that dependence carried no cost. To him, patience was not caution. It was another contribution to the thing he intended to eliminate.

Demer watched the same crowds and saw the size of the future sale.

The core supported the Sanctuary, four public combat levels, the Undercity, and a country. Great powers would compete to buy it. If the capture advanced the hunters’ classes as expected, the group could profit twice. None of that remained if Cassor destroyed the core to satisfy his order’s doctrine.

One of Demer’s associates lifted the first equipment case from the floor.

”Our suppressors are not being used on that portal.” He said. ”Neither are the escape tokens.”

Cassor looked at him. ”Those were purchased for the expedition.”

”With our money. They were purchased to extract an intact core. If you turn the Sanctuary against us before we locate it, we leave with them.”

The second associate closed the map case.

The division created immediate consequences. Demer’s side controlled the funds for rooms, long-distance communication, replacement equipment, and bribes outside the dungeon. Cassor’s supporters carried more direct combat power. Neither group could conduct the search as planned without the other.

Cassor placed one hand beside the portal tool.

”You would abandon the only chance to remove this threat because the attempt might reduce your payment.”

”I would abandon your attempt.” Demer said. ”We have no evidence that portal approaches the core. You want to commit the entire operation because waiting offends you.”

Both sides understood that an open break would end the hunt before security needed to act.

Cassor removed his hand from his weapon. ”Not tonight.” He said.

Demer did not mistake postponement for agreement. ”The tool remains outside the Sanctuary until we have a verified destination.”

”It remains with my people.”

”Then your people remain away from the portal.”

Cassor wrapped the wedges in cloth and returned them to their case. His supporters left with him.

Demer waited until the door closed before looking at his associates.

”Move the money.” He said. ”Separate rooms, separate storage, and no shared access tokens. If he tries this without us, we cannot allow the dungeon to take everything with him.”

The greedy faction began protecting itself from its allies.

Elsewhere in the Sanctuary, the security review had already moved beyond one suspicious question.

The gnome supervisor responsible for the afternoon review sat before a wall displaying seven ordinary reports. None described an attack. No one had forced a door, threatened a clerk, or carried a weapon into a protected office.

Read alone, each report barely justified attention.

The first came from the map office. A challenge participant had asked which route connected the destroyed Corathian transit ring to Max Clarkson’s private chambers. When another adventurer questioned the purpose, the visitor expressed contempt for people who trusted dungeons.

The second came from an Undercity information counter. Two visitors asked whether Hizon’s public service tunnels joined Max’s administrative roads. They accepted the clerk’s refusal and purchased equipment before leaving.

The third came from a Sanctuary porter who worked near the staff court. The same two people had spent portions of three shift changes sitting on different public benches with clear views of the portal. They never approached the barrier.

The fourth came from Corathen.

A visitor had requested archived freight records for the district surrounding the destroyed transit ring. The records themselves were public. His questions focused on which depots had supplied the restricted junction, where the staff working there lived, and what routes remained after the challenge.

Two more reports involved people asking which administrative buildings Max visited most often and whether staff portals always returned employees to the same destination.

The final report came from the public entrance. A visitor connected to the challenge had brought in a specialized spatial instrument that morning. The inspection found no prohibited enchantment. The instrument had been declared accurately and released to its owner.

The supervisor arranged the reports by visitor instead of location.

He checked the times before joining them. The Undercity questions happened while the same visitors were recorded there purchasing supplies. The portal observations followed later. Corathian inquiries belonged to different people traveling through a route that could plausibly place them in the district. Nothing depended on one person appearing in two places at once or a clerk remembering a face from weeks earlier.

The links came from declared visitor records, challenge participation, and the subjects of the questions. The group repeatedly moved from public information toward private routes, then shifted locations when a clerk refused to answer. That progression mattered more than any one name.

The supervisor also removed two unrelated reports from the review. One involved an Academy researcher measuring every public portal in the Sanctuary. The other came from a family waiting near the staff court because a gnome relative worked the evening shift. Similar conduct without the shared route questions did not make them part of the same concern.

The same cluster crossed four of them. Every member had participated in the challenge. Several had been recorded near the restricted search in Corathen. Their current activities moved outward from the point where the invasion had failed.

The supervisor did not know about Cassor’s meeting.

The room’s privacy protections had worked as promised. Security possessed no words spoken inside it, no copied maps from the table, and no record of how the hunters divided their objectives.

The public reports were enough to establish a pattern without them. He raised the review from routine to Tier Two.

[Cross-boundary infrastructure concern.]

[Current violations: None confirmed.]

[Action: Coordinate existing reports. Observe public activity. Preserve normal access unless conduct changes.]

The instruction reached the map office, the administrative portal team, the Undercity security desk, and the Corathian district responsible for the destroyed ring. Clerks were not told to provoke another question or deny services they would ordinarily provide. Guards did not approach people merely for standing in public places.

Names received quiet flags so a new report would join the same review instead of entering a separate daily queue.

The flags did not block rooms, meals, portals, contracts, or purchases. They changed only where a relevant report went. A hunter who spent the next week behaving like an ordinary visitor would encounter no manufactured obstacle. A hunter who asked the next question about the same private route would no longer depend on two offices failing to compare notes.

The supervisor requested the challenge records attached to those names. The records confirmed that five of the visitors had joined expeditions that crossed the final sealed boundary. Two had been present when the transit ring was destroyed. Demer had contributed maps and supplies to the core search without reaching the final route himself. Cassor had fought on the northern side of the restricted district.

The pattern still did not prove they intended a new crime. It proved their questions were not random curiosity.

Near evening, Cassor’s portal tool left the Sanctuary inside its declared case. The entrance record showed its owner taking a room in the mountain settlement outside the dungeon. Security did not stop him.

At the same time, two other hunters returned to the public benches near the staff court. One watched the gnomes crossing the portal. The other counted how long the barrier remained open after each token was accepted.

The portal clerk completed a report after his shift. By the time both visitors walked away, their names were already attached to the review waiting in the security office.
