Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Kincaid had watched challenges before, but never from a room built for company.

The observation chamber contained four broad terraces arranged around a hollow center. No wall enclosed the space. Beyond the lowest railing stretched a field of darkness broken by drifting points of silver, as though someone had built the room above a night sky and forgotten to place a world beneath it.

Four viewing panels floated over the central opening.

Each showed a different dungeon.

Kincaid occupied the eastern terrace. Khorren sat to his left with both heavy forearms braced on the stone rail. The Threxal minor god belonged to a people Kincaid had never encountered anywhere in the Prime Universe. Four plates of black shell protected Khorren’s broad torso, and a thick mane of pale sensory fibers rose and fell along the back of his neck whenever the battle he watched changed direction. His lower body rested upon six jointed legs, each ending in a blunt pad rather than a foot.

Khorren rarely wasted words. When his champion’s team made a poor decision, he stated what had gone wrong. When they succeeded, he watched for the next danger instead of celebrating.

Ithara stood on the opposite terrace, her narrow Lumenai body folded forward over the railing. Translucent fins spread from her arms and shoulders, catching colors from the viewing panels. Her skin shifted between blue and silver according to the light around her, while three dark eyes followed separate portions of her champion’s dungeon.

She was patient enough to watch a trap remain untouched for an hour if doing so taught her why every team avoided it.

Namarik possessed neither Khorren’s stillness nor Ithara’s patience. The Tressan minor god paced on four long legs while two smaller arms repeatedly adjusted the cords around his chest. A crown of short red tendrils surrounded his flat face. They tightened whenever his champion’s team approached danger and relaxed whenever the danger passed.

Their peoples shared no ancestry, world, or physical pattern. Only their positions beneath the Elder God had placed them in the same room.

They had met through the apprentice archives long before the first challenge began. None would have called the others close friends, but they exchanged information, admitted uncertainty, and had never attempted to turn another’s failure into an advantage. Among the remaining apprentices, that counted for a great deal.

Namarik stopped pacing when his viewing panel flashed.

Three teams stood on separate islands beneath a black storm. Seven green seals shone through sheets of rain, each fixed within a different tower rising from the surrounding sea.

One team had just lost a bridge.

The structure was not a rope crossing or a line of planks. It was a ribbon of water held rigid between two islands. When a scaled warrior stepped upon the center, lightning struck the anchoring pillar behind him. The bridge collapsed into the sea, taking two members of his team with it.

Namarik’s tendrils drew tight against his skull.

”They saw the clouds gathering over the pillar.” Khorren said.

”They saw clouds everywhere. It is a storm.”

”Those clouds moved against the wind.”

”I noticed that after the lightning hit.”

”So did they.”

Ithara’s fins brightened with a brief wash of amusement. She said nothing. The team in her panel had reached a courtyard so completely overtaken by vegetation that only the highest temple walls remained visible. Pale roots shifted beneath the soil. Three groups of monsters moved through different portions of the growth while seven seals pulsed like distant lanterns.

The objective written across the top of every viewing panel was identical.

SEVEN SEALS OPEN THE FINAL GATE.

CLAIM THE SEALS.

REACH THE GATE.

Everything beneath the message differed.

Khorren’s champion had sent ten creatures into a subterranean forge. Moving platforms crossed channels of molten metal. Hammer constructs worked without smiths, striking anvils hard enough to shake sparks from the ceiling. One rival team held the upper foundry. Another searched through cooling tunnels beneath it.

Ithara’s champion faced the living temple. Roots opened some paths and closed others. Flowering beasts slept beneath false patches of ground. Every seal removed from its altar caused a new section of vegetation to wake.

Namarik’s three teams fought the storm, the islands, and one another.

Max’s elites crossed a ruined city.

Four champions. Four dungeons. The same objective.

Kincaid had wondered how the Elder God intended to place hundreds of teams into a single competition without allowing the first successful group to end the challenge for everyone else. The answer now surrounded him.

The Elder God had built many dungeons.

Each held three competing teams and seven seals. Only one of those teams could carry all seven through its final gate.

How many versions existed remained hidden. Kincaid could see the challenges connected to the three apprentices sharing the room because the Elder God had permitted them to watch together. He could not search for other chambers, count the active dungeons, or determine how many champions had already failed.

Namarik glanced toward Max’s panel. ”Your champion’s creatures have three.”

”Yes.”

”One rival has at least one.”

”Varkesh’s team has one.” Kincaid said. ”The third team possesses two. One remains unclaimed.”

The viewing panel had revealed the counts only after six seals were removed. It showed three bronze marks beside Aderic’s team, one beside the beastkin force, and two beside the unfamiliar insectoid group moving through the southern ruins. The last seal still produced a column of pale light above the inner city.

”Then searching is almost over.” Khorren said.

”The difficult part is beginning.” Ithara replied.

Her voice carried two tones at once, one low and one soft. ”The seals force contact. A team can avoid its rivals while useful objects remain unclaimed. No one can avoid them after every seal has an owner.”

Namarik resumed pacing. ”My champion’s team should take the nearest tower before the others realize that.”

”They have already realized it,” Khorren said.

On Namarik’s panel, a winged team abandoned the tower it had been climbing and turned toward another group carrying two seals.

Namarik made a strained sound and stopped offering advice his creatures could not hear.

Kincaid understood the impulse. Max’s team had just left the suspended tower with its third seal. A harpy descended toward a false trail Dagna had prepared while Varkesh’s other scouts searched the adjoining streets. Aderic led his force in the opposite direction, using damaged buildings to conceal their movement.

The human commander did not know the exact distribution displayed to Kincaid. He knew only that six bells had sounded and that his group carried three seals. He would have to decide whether the remaining light represented an opportunity or bait.

Kincaid could not warn him that both rival teams had begun moving toward it.

Ithara shifted her attention between panels. ”Your champion created these ten for the challenge?”

”He purchased twenty Eternal Souls and formed them into a permanent unit. These ten were selected from that force.”

”A sensible expense.” Khorren said.

Namarik’s tendrils loosened when his team found a surviving bridge. ”An expensive one.”

”Those are not opposites.”

Kincaid kept his answer brief. Max’s spending was not the important part. The team had entered with a command structure, complementary positions, and weeks of shared preparation. The Elder God had given no warning about ruined cities, canals, seals, or rival teams. Max could not have trained them for the exact dungeon.

He had trained them to solve unfamiliar problems together.

That distinction had preserved all ten members through the flooded temple and prevented Varkesh from dividing them on the battlements.

Ithara appeared to reach the same conclusion. ”My champion chose its strongest creatures from four territories. Individually, they exceed most of yours. They still argue whenever the route divides.”

In her living temple, a horned creature struck at a wall of roots while a smaller caster attempted to stop it. Their commander wasted several moments restoring order.

”Strength without cooperation remains strength.” Khorren said. ”It merely becomes easier to waste.”

In Khorren’s forge dungeon, one team opened a cooling channel and released a wall of steam across the upper foundry. The maneuver concealed them from their rivals but also hid the moving platforms they needed to cross. Khorren’s sensory mane lifted while he waited to see whether the choice became clever or disastrous.

”They planned markers before opening it.” Ithara said. Her middle eye followed faint lights placed along the platform edges.

Khorren’s mane settled. ”Then they understood the cost.”

The exchange drew Kincaid’s attention back to Max’s force. Aderic could not know what shape the final guardian would take. His task was not to avoid every cost. It was to make sure the team understood what each decision risked before paying it.

Max’s panel shifted as the elites entered a collapsed municipal hall.

Siv returned from scouting the western route. The quickling used short gestures rather than speech, reporting movement ahead and above. The elf ranger pointed toward a distant roof. A harpy crossed the gap, nearly invisible against the colorless sky.

Varkesh’s team had found them again.

Aderic studied the pale light marking the remaining seal. The direct road passed through a district surrounding a leaning bell tower. Cracks divided the broad square before it. Six bronze statues stood inside recessed alcoves along the outer buildings.

”Those are not decorative.” Ithara said.

Khorren’s mane rose slightly. ”Nothing here is decorative.”

The viewing panel followed Siv as she circled the district. For a moment, the walls obstructed the rest of the team. Kincaid saw deep impressions in the stone street, each wider than the quickling’s body. They formed no continuous trail. One appeared beside the bell tower. Another marked the central square. A third crushed the edge of a roof two buildings away.

Siv knelt beside the nearest depression and touched broken bronze embedded in the stone.

The bell moved above her.

No wind crossed the square.

The enormous instrument shifted once within its damaged frame, and the ground beneath the district trembled. Dust poured from the surrounding roofs. A crack widened between Siv’s feet.

Far beneath the bell tower, something answered.

Kincaid leaned closer to the panel. The view would not move ahead of Max’s creatures or reveal anything outside their immediate surroundings. He saw only a section of the square and the dark entrance of a street leading toward it.

Then a stone hand large enough to close around a wagon gripped the far side of the tower.

Namarik forgot his own challenge long enough to stare.

”That is excessive.” He said.

Khorren’s pale mane settled flat. ”It is the final unclaimed seal. Excess should have been expected.”

Across the ruins, Varkesh’s harpy descended onto a distant roof.

In another street, the insectoid team stopped moving and turned toward the bell.

All three teams now knew where the last unclaimed seal waited.

Kincaid watched Aderic call his people together.

The search was over.
