Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max kept the challenge review short.

Aderic reported the decisions that led to each seal, the attempted alliance with Varkesh, the third team’s destruction, and the final battle. Dagna described the mechanisms they encountered. Siv explained where enemy scouts succeeded and where they failed. The revived orc bulwark listened to the portion of the battle he had missed.

Max approved replacing damaged equipment and adding the ruined city’s mechanisms to future training exercises. He did not rebuild the entire elite unit around one challenge. They had succeeded because they adapted, not because they guessed the correct terrain in advance.

The twenty Eternal Souls returned to training after two days of recovery.

Anna returned to her ordinary work before they did.

Her morning began with a clipboard, three messages from settlement representatives, a request for larger cooking pots, and a complaint written on bark because the dryad who sent it disliked paper.

Mira found her in the administrative office sorting the requests by location.

”Do you read all of those?” The girl asked.

”Eventually.” Anna answered.

”Even the ones about cooking pots?”

”Especially those. People become much less reasonable when they cannot make dinner.”

Mira leaned over the desk without touching the stacks. At fourteen, she had lived in the dungeon long enough to stop treating every monster as either a threat or a wonder. She still possessed enough curiosity to ask questions adults often avoided because they thought the answer should be obvious.

”What are you doing today?”

”Checking the eastern orc housing, visiting a fey settlement, reviewing work assignments near the lower storehouses, and finding out why twelve goblins requested transfers on the same morning.”

”Can I come?”

Anna considered the schedule. Mira was not dungeon staff but she could still observe.

”You can come if you understand that people may discuss private complaints. Anything personal stays with us.”

Mira agreed.

Garrick did not appear to object, offer instructions, or follow them through the day. Mira no longer required her grandfather to hover over every conversation. He had his own routines, and she had the freedom to spend time with Anna without turning it into a family event.

Their first stop lay in an orc community near the edge of the Highlands support territory. The houses had been adequate when Max created them. The families living there had grown since then, and the community acquired possessions no original plan anticipated.

Anna entered the largest shared building and found sleeping mats rolled against storage crates, hunting equipment stacked beneath benches, and three young orcs attempting to play a chasing game in the only open aisle.

The community representative expected Anna to approve another house immediately.

”We have nineteen more residents than the building held at the beginning.” He complained.

”And enough timber for construction?”

”We can cut it.”

Anna walked through the space before answering. The sleeping rooms were crowded but not dangerously so. The central hall created most of the problem. Crates containing seasonal tools occupied nearly one wall. A broken handcart filled part of another. Bundles of dried hides hung low enough that adults ducked beneath them.

Mira watched one of the children squeeze between two crates.

”Where do they play when it rains?” She asked.

The representative looked toward the central hall.

”Here.”

”They can’t.”

That was the real complaint. The community needed additional housing eventually, but its immediate frustration came from using living space as storage.

Anna approved a separate storehouse built by the residents with ordinary materials. Max did not need to spend DP to solve a problem the community could address through construction. She also placed the larger house on the future planning list because nineteen additional residents would eventually make the sleeping rooms inadequate even after the crates moved.

The orcs accepted the distinction. They had not asked Max to create luxury. They wanted someone to recognize that their population changed.

Outside, Mira added a note to the clipboard in smaller handwriting.

”Children need covered space.” She read.

”That is going to appear in every settlement now, isn’t it?”

”Probably.”

Anna left the note.

The fey complaint concerned water.

Someone adjusted a stream near their settlement after a storm damaged its bank. The new channel looked cleaner and kept the path from flooding. It also bypassed a shallow bed where silver moss grew beneath the surface.

Three hybsils met Anna at the edge of the path. A dryad watched from beside her tree, while several fairies argued above the diverted stream.

”The water is wrong.” the oldest hybsil said.

Mira looked at the clear channel. ”It looks like water.”

”It arrives too quickly.”

The fairies began speaking at once. Anna waited until they exhausted the first burst of complaints, then asked the dryad what changed.

Mira tried to follow all three fairies and failed within seconds. One blamed the repaired bank. Another blamed the workers who moved the stones. The third insisted the real problem began when someone planted yellow flowers upstream.

”Do the flowers affect the moss?” Mira asked.

All three fairies stopped.

”No.” the dryad said.

”Then why are we talking about them?”

”Because they are ugly.” The third fairy replied.

Anna placed the flower complaint on a separate page. The fey were entitled to dislike them. They were not entitled to bury the water problem beneath every other disagreement they remembered.

The slower flow through the old bed carried mineral-rich sediment. The silver moss depended upon it. Redirecting the water kept the road dry but would kill the moss within weeks.

The solution did not require restoring the flood. A narrow branch could feed the old bed while most water followed the repaired channel. The fey could build it themselves once someone approved altering the bank.

Mira crouched beside the moss. ”What do you use it for?”

”Nothing.” One fairy said.

Another objected immediately. ”It is beautiful.”

”That is not nothing.” Mira said.

Anna wrote the adjustment on her clipboard.

They ate lunch near the Sanctuary before visiting the lower storehouses. Mira asked why Anna bothered inspecting communities that could solve many problems themselves.

”Because being able to solve a problem does not mean people are allowed to change anything they want.” Anna said. ”The stream affects the path. The storehouse affects nearby land. Work assignments affect other groups. Someone has to see how the pieces fit together.”

”And make everyone happy?”

”No.”

Mira waited.

”That answer was very quick.”

”Keeping people happy means taking their needs seriously. It does not mean every person gets everything they request. Sometimes two reasonable requests conflict.”

The twelve goblins demonstrated the point.

They worked in a packing section near the lower storehouses. Their request claimed the assignment was repetitive and offered no opportunity to improve their skills. The supervisor believed they wanted easier work.

The goblins did not.

They wanted harder work in rotation.

One wanted to train with inventory records. Two hoped to join transport crews. Four wanted maintenance experience. The others simply disliked spending every day sealing the same crates.

The supervisor objected that changing workers constantly would reduce efficiency.

”For the first week,” Anna said. ”What happens when your only experienced packers become too unhappy to stay?”

He had no answer.

They agreed to rotate three goblins at a time through neighboring assignments. The packing section retained enough experienced workers, while the goblins gained variety and skills useful elsewhere.

Anna required the supervisor to review the rotation after one month. If packing slowed temporarily, that did not prove the plan failed. If sealed crates began leaving with missing inventory or damaged goods, the workers would need more training before rotating again.

One goblin asked whether volunteering for records work guaranteed a permanent office position.

”No.” Anna said. ”It guarantees a chance to learn whether you are good at it.”

The goblin appeared satisfied. A fair opportunity mattered more than an empty promise.

Mira waited until they left before speaking.

”They asked for more work.”

”Different work.”

”I thought complaints were about wanting less.”

”That is why we ask.”

Their last visit concerned food supplies in a mixed settlement where orcs, goblins, and two fey families lived close together. The written complaint blamed insufficient deliveries. The storehouse contained enough food.

The problem was that one group used the shared cooking space at the same hour every evening, leaving the others waiting until late.

Anna did not create another kitchen. The residents rearranged the schedule and moved one outdoor cooking frame beneath an existing roof. The request for larger pots remained valid because the settlement’s current cookware could not prepare meals efficiently for its population.

Before leaving, Anna inspected the sleeping spaces used by several nocturnal residents. Day workers passed the doors constantly, and children played beside the outer wall while those residents tried to rest. No rule had been broken. The building had simply been assigned without considering when different people slept.

Mira suggested moving the night workers into an unused section behind the storehouse.

The rooms there were quieter but smelled strongly of preserved onions.

”I would rather hear children. Then smell onions.” One goblin said.

The group chose two rooms near the far end of the settlement instead. Their current occupants worked during the day and preferred being closer to the cooking area. The exchange solved both complaints without constructing anything.

Anna added sleep schedules to the questions used when assigning future mixed housing. It was a small change. That was the point of spending time among the residents. A menu could list populations and available rooms. It could not tell her that onions made one technically suitable building unbearable.

By the time Anna returned to the administrative office, Mira’s handwriting covered the margins of three pages.

They had solved several problems without DP, punishment, or Max’s personal involvement. One new house remained on the planning list. The cooking pots needed to be ordered. A disagreement over night work required another visit because neither side accepted the proposed schedule.

The dungeon’s residents did not remain content merely because Max gave them safe places to live. Their needs changed. Their communities grew. Small irritations became large ones when ignored.

Anna summarized the day for Max over dinner. She did not present every cooking schedule and storage crate as a decision requiring his approval. She told him about the future house, the larger cookware order, and the repeated need for covered spaces where children could play.

Max approved adding the larger construction questions to their next planning session. He asked whether anything required action that evening.

”Only the pots.” Anna said. ”Unless you want tomorrow’s meal prepared in six separate batches.”

Max agreed that the pots should not wait.

Mira placed the clipboard on Anna’s desk.

”Are we doing this again tomorrow?”

”You are allowed to have other interests.”

”I do. I want to see why the cyclops asked for six doors and no hinges.”

Anna looked at the next morning’s list. ”So do I.”
