Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max Clarkson’s response reached Ravelle in sections.

The first page appeared beneath Tomas Newl’s cipher mark shortly after sunset. The second followed four minutes later. By the time the archive plate finished verifying the final page, Captain Ressa Kale had already sent for the officials who possessed authority to act upon it.

She did not summon every official who wanted that authority.

The city council’s western chamber held twenty-four seats around a lowered central floor. All twenty-four were occupied when Kale entered the following morning. Another sixty observers filled the galleries. Guild representatives stood beside municipal officers. University delegates shared a bench while their assistants filled the aisle behind them. Three men from the coalition, that had supplied most of the challenge army, had arrived with written demands.

Tomas’s transmission rested on the central table.

The verified text contained less than most people in the room wanted.

Max would receive a small delegation declared in advance. Members of Ravelle could use the public entrance under the same rules as other visitors. Participation in the seven-day challenge did not make someone a permanent enemy, but any renewed attempt to locate or capture the core would.

The delegation would receive no privileged route through the dungeon, no military access, and no authority inside Corathen. Sanctuary protections and local rules applied to every visitor. Restricted areas remained restricted.

The response promised communication.

It did not promise agreement.

”We should send an escort large enough to protect the delegation outside the mountain.” Marshal Halden said before the clerk finished reading. ”Fifty soldiers, divided among ordinary travel clothes if the Dungeon Master objects to a formal column.”

Kale remained beside the central table. ”He did not object to uniforms. He objected to an armed expedition described as an escort.”

”Fifty soldiers are not an expedition.”

”A five person delegation surrounded by fifty soldiers will look like one to every city along the route and to the person receiving us.”

Several gallery observers began speaking at once. The presiding clerk struck a brass plate until the room quieted.

Halden had not entered the challenge. He had kept Ravelle’s garrison intact while the divine quest drew soldiers, adventurers, and guild forces from across the region. Kale respected the decision. Ravelle could not leave its own walls undefended because a gate appeared in its central square.

That did not give the Marshal a clearer understanding of the force they had attacked.

”Tomas reached Crag Mountain with a caravan,” Kale continued. ”The route is public. The Sanctuary is safer than this chamber. Fifty soldiers would add four weeks of supply work, tell every settlement along the road that Ravelle is sending another armed force, and violate the first condition Max Clarkson gave us.”

”You use his name easily now.” said Councilor Bren Aldren from the upper row.

”It is public information.”

”He killed our people.”

Kale looked at him. ”I commanded people who entered his dungeon under orders to take his core. Everyone who died during the challenge returned at midnight. If you intend to accuse him of murder, please present a death certificate.”

Aldren had none.

His objection did not vanish. It changed direction.

”Then perhaps the officer who led that attack should not lead our first diplomatic visit.”

That argument had already appeared in four written objections. Kale understood it better than she understood the demand for disguised soldiers.

She placed Tomas’s original request beside Max’s answer.

”He knows who I am. Tomas identified me in the first sentence of my letter. Max accepted the delegation after reading it. Sending someone else to avoid acknowledging my part in the challenge would begin the visit with an evasion.”

”Or with tact.” Aldren said.

Edrin Salve spoke from the municipal delegation bench.

”Tact will be my responsibility. Concealing the delegation’s actual authority will not.”

Edrin had negotiated river access with three neighboring states and ended a two-year dispute over portal tariffs without causing any of the parties to close their portals. He was a narrow man with gray beginning at his temples and a habit of reading every document before discussing it. Unlike several people competing for the same place, he had not asked to lead the delegation before seeing Max’s reply.

Kale had selected him as Ravelle’s municipal diplomat.

The council had to confirm the selection.

Councilor Aldren turned toward him. ”You are comfortable serving beneath Captain Kale?”

”I am comfortable allowing the person responsible for the mission to lead it. I will negotiate where Ravelle has authorized me to negotiate. The two duties do not conflict.”

The presiding clerk recorded Edrin’s answer.

The trade seat produced a longer argument.

Six merchant associations claimed they deserved it. Two had supplied the challenge. One controlled most of Ravelle’s portal freight. Another offered to pay the delegation’s entire travel cost in return for the right to negotiate exclusive access to Sanctuary markets.

Kale rejected exclusivity before the association finished describing it.

”Max offered his public facilities under the same rules that apply to other visitors.” She said. ”We will not respond by promising one Ravelle guild control over trade he has not agreed to establish. Besides, how would you even do that. What of the merchants who already operate in and around the dungeon. Your idea is impossible to implement.”

The association’s speaker gathered his documents with visible care. ”Then who did you choose?”

”Orvek Dorne.”

Orvek stepped away from the gallery wall. He represented the independent trade council, which meant most large merchant houses considered him insufficiently loyal and most small ones considered him tolerable. His experience included portal fees, caravan insurance, foreign measures, and negotiating common standards among businesses that would rather lose money than use a rival’s weights.

”What does your council receive?” The association speaker asked.

”The same reports every registered Ravelle merchant can request from the municipal archive,” Orvek said. ”If a trade agreement becomes possible, I will establish terms the city can publish. I will not reserve the first wagons for my own members.”

That answer cost him support in the merchant gallery and gained it from the council floor.

The academic seat went to Olan Merrow.

Olan had spent the week after the challenge interviewing participants about Corathen’s roads, public portals, and graveyard reports. He had also written the first archive memorandum warning researchers not to treat dungeon residents as constructed evidence without establishing what they were.

One university opposed him because his work crossed several disciplines and belonged fully to none.

”A portal theorist should examine the connection.” Its dean argued. ”The gate that opened here surpassed every known spatial structure.”

”The gate is gone.” Olan replied. ”Max Clarkson did not create it, and his letter offers no access to whatever authority did. The surviving research subject is the dungeon we can visit lawfully. That requires someone capable of asking residents for consent before taking measurements.”

The dean disliked the implication because it described two of his submitted proposals accurately.

Kale had chosen Olan for the same reason.

The final seat belonged to a challenge veteran.

That decision drew fewer claims and more dangerous ones.

Several guilds offered famous adventurers whose contribution rewards had already become part of their advertising. The military proposed an officer who had spent the final day leading the search near the destroyed transit ring. A temple submitted a resurrection specialist who had died six times during the challenge and considered the number a qualification.

Kale selected Varik Senn, a former infantry sergeant who had spent three days guarding a field hospital in the Orc Highlands and the final day escorting displaced Corathians away from the army’s search routes.

He possessed no rare reward and had never reached the restricted boundary.

”Why him?” Marshal Halden asked.

Varik answered from the witness bench. ”Because I spoke with the people whose country we entered.”

He was a heavyset human man with one ear permanently folded from an injury received years before the challenge. The system had restored every wound he suffered during the seven days. It had not altered the older scar.

”What did they tell you?” Halden asked.

”Most wanted to know when we would leave. Some wanted payment for food. A farmer asked whether the army intended to trample the same field twice. None knew why a divine gate had brought us there.”

”We need someone with negotiation experience.”

”Edrin provides that,” Varik said. ”My purpose is to recognize when our reports turn residents into scenery.”

Varik’s seat was confirmed with the largest margin.

The five names now stood together on the delegation order.

Captain Ressa Kale, mission leader.

Edrin Salve, authorized municipal diplomat.

Orvek Dorne, trade representative.

Olan Merrow, academic observer.

Varik Senn, challenge veteran.

Tomas Newl would join them in the Sanctuary. His first-contact authority remained valid until Kale arrived and formally received Max’s response.

The council moved to instructions.

This was where the disagreement stopped being about seats and became a struggle over what the delegation meant.

Councilor Aldren proposed requiring Kale to obtain a map of every route between the Sanctuary and the restricted district reached during the challenge. A guild representative wanted written access to class trainers before Ravelle recognized Max’s ownership of the dungeon. The marshal’s office submitted language directing Kale to assess whether the public entrance could admit siege equipment if relations failed.

Edrin read each proposal without reacting.

Then he placed Max’s response beside them.

”None of these are negotiating objectives.” he said. ”The first requests protected military information. The second demands a concession before we recognize the person we are asking to grant it. The third instructs a declared diplomatic delegation to conduct covert reconnaissance. If the council adopts any one of them, I will withdraw my name.”

”You would abandon the city over a contingency assessment?” Halden asked.

”I would decline to place my seal on a false declaration of purpose. I would also like to remind everyone here that we were given a week with daily resurrections to invade this dungeon in question and we failed. Currently the dungeon master holds no ill will and understand that we did not start this challenge.”

When those in the chamber quieted down and reflected on her words she continued.

”Is everyone prepared to make an enemy of this Dungeon Master? I for one have never heard of a dungeon powerful enough to contain an entire country inside and I have no plans to make an enemy out of said Dungeon Master.

The presiding clerk called the proposals separately.

All three failed.

The instructions that passed were narrower. Establish a reliable channel between Ravelle and Max Clarkson. Confirm the rules applying to Ravelle’s visitors. Determine whether lawful trade and academic contact could proceed through existing public access. Provide Max with current information about organized threats originating in Ravelle when that information could be verified. They agreed with Kale, now was not the time to make enemies.

Kale received authority to discuss future agreements.

She did not receive authority to sign one without review.

The military escort returned during the final vote. The council authorized two guards for the journey to the dungeon.

Preparation took six days.

Olan reduced twelve cases of proposed research equipment to one measuring kit and a stack of interview forms. Orvek assembled samples of Ravelle goods without treating them as a shipment Max had agreed to purchase. Edrin carried the city’s sealed authority and three versions of potential contact terms, each clearly marked as a proposal.

The delegation’s public notice named Crag Mountain as its destination and peaceful contact as its purpose. Kale refused requests to conceal the journey. Tomas had already reported that core hunters possessed the route. Secrecy would inconvenience lawful travelers without misleading the people they most needed Max to recognize as separate from Ravelle’s government.

On the morning of departure, a crowd filled the portal square where the divine gate had stood.

The white stone retained no open connection. Municipal barriers protected the diviners still studying its residue. The public portal used by Kale’s delegation stood at the opposite side of the square and led west toward the first stage of Tomas’s route.

Marshal Halden attended without soldiers.

Councilor Aldren did not attend.

The merchant associations sent observers to record which sample cases Orvek carried. Two universities delivered sealed questions for Olan. He accepted the questions and made no promise that anyone in the Sanctuary would answer them.

Kale checked the five travel records against the manifest.

One leader, four delegates, no hidden additions.

Their packs had already passed inspection. Caravan reservations waited beyond the third portal city. Tomas’s route report identified the trade house where they could obtain current Crag Mountain guides before beginning the final road journey.

The portal official activated the arch.

Edrin entered first with the city’s sealed documents. Orvek and Olan followed with the sample case and research pack. Varik paused long enough to look across the square at the stone where the challenge gate had appeared, then stepped through.

Kale gave the departure clerk their final copy of the manifest and joined them.

The portal closed after all five records cleared the far station.
