Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian did not contact the Hidden Ledger from the mountains.

Helmar’s new force would send messengers toward the same settlements Lucian needed to cross. Any rushed attempt to deliver a report risked placing him beside men who recognized Blackwater Reach’s private signals. He kept north of the river for two days, passed around the mining junction, and joined the main road only after reaching territory where a lone adventurer no longer stood out.

The return to Ironcloud took longer than the outward journey. Lucian changed caravans twice and spent one night in a freight station crowded with miners, traders, and off-duty airship crew. No one asked about the mountain mud on his boots. Half the travelers carried the same mud.

At the Hidden Ledger contact point in Ironcloud, he used the agreed phrase and received a room key. The room held paper, sealing wax, and a message confirming that the clients remained in Ironcloud. Lucian wrote only that he had returned and would present the report in person.

The intermediary met him the following afternoon.

”Problems?” the man asked.

”No.”

”Were you identified?”

”No.”

”Did you enter the property?”

”Yes.”

The intermediary accepted all three answers without demanding a story in the street. He led Lucian through the same network of workshops and enclosed bridges used for the original meeting. The route changed twice, possibly because the Ledger rotated access and possibly because the man wanted to ensure Lucian had not brought anyone behind him.

Rod’s party and Renn waited in a room above a metalworking shop. Midnight occupied the windowsill. The familiar watched Lucian enter, then returned its attention to the airships moving between Ironcloud’s docks.

Renn stood before the door closed. ”You found it?”

Lucian placed his pack on the table. ”Blackwater Reach is active. Helmar controls it.”

The dwarf’s hand closed around the ring beneath his shirt.

Rod motioned toward the empty chair. ”Start with what you confirmed.”

Lucian approved of the distinction. He removed his maps and laid them in order.

The first showed the northern ridge, river road, western approach, airship shelf, and all four concealed observation posts. The second showed the compound buildings and the runic movement boundaries. The third reproduced the accessible mine map from the administrative office.

”These were the patrol routes before Helmar arrived.” Lucian said. ”Do not assume the times remain accurate. The observation-post positions and fixed wards should still be useful unless he rebuilds them.”

Dirk leaned over the ridge map. He followed Lucian’s approach with one finger but did not interrupt.

”How many people?” Dain asked.

”Before Helmar arrived, fewer than two hundred visible residents, including laborers. More people were underground. Helmar brought at least three hundred warriors, plus officers, engineers, servants, and household staff. I left while additional ships were still unloading.”

”He moved his household?” Renn asked.

”Furniture and records went into the residence. They raised his banner. It appeared permanent.”

Renn sank back into his chair. The news troubled him for a reason Lucian did not need explained. Helmar’s presence made any future approach harder, but it also confirmed the property mattered enough to become the center of his faction.

Lana examined the ward map. ”Did you take one of their suppression tokens?”

”No. Workers are checked at shift changes, and the tokens may be assigned by zone. A stolen one would tell them an intrusion was possible even if I used it successfully.”

She nodded and studied the gap near the repaired drain.

Lucian gave them the administrative building next. He described the cleaner’s route, the delivery entrance, the records annex he chose not to enter, and the offices he searched. He passed Renn copied supply totals and slave-transfer entries.

Nessa read the first sheet twice. ”These are people?”

”The records call them contracted labor units. I saw two deliveries. They were chained.”

”How many came back out?”

”None while I watched. The records contain no outbound transfers for any group sent into the lower work areas.”

The room became quiet.

Renn compared the transfers against Lucian’s map. ”Where are they taking them?”

Lucian pointed at the numbered sections below the old mine. ”Somewhere along these routes. The accessible map stops giving interior details after Lower Work Area Three. Area Nine lies below the deepest tunnel in your archive records.”

”You did not go down?”

”No.”

Renn’s disappointment appeared immediately. Rod spoke before it became an objection.

”We hired him to learn whether we could enter without Helmar knowing. Going alone into an unmapped mine full of guards would have been a suicide job.”

”I know.” Renn said.

The dwarf looked at the copied transfer lists again. He did not sound convinced by his own answer, but he did not criticize Lucian.

Dirk asked questions about terrain. Which ridge sections could support a group? Where would armor scrape stone? Could the river cover sound? Which guard posts could see the repaired landing shelf?

Lucian answered what he knew. When Dirk asked whether a western ravine connected to the mine, Lucian said he had not confirmed it. The map showed a drainage line but no passage.

Dain studied the barracks. ”Could five people cross the yard?”

”Not using my route. The ward gap is narrow and the wall climb requires silence. A group needs a different entrance or a way to cross while authorized traffic is moving.”

”The mine gets supplies.” Lana said.

”Constantly. Helmar’s arrival will increase them. So will the inspections.”

Nessa placed the slave records beside the map. ”If we go below, we cannot ignore them.”

No one disagreed.

That was where the mission ended and the next one began. Lucian had not been hired to plan a rescue or determine what the ring opened. He had given them occupied zones, defenses, air access, supply routes, and evidence of something hidden in the deepest mine.

Renn finally asked the question he had been holding. ”Did you learn what Helmar wants there?”

”No. The records I accessed never mentioned what lays below. They show he has controlled the property for years and is moving his operation there now.”

Lucian did not soften the answer with theories. The vibration beneath the mountain, the blank map area, and the water-noise warning might matter. He described all three and let Renn decide how they fit the family archives.

Renn’s eyes stopped on the eastern edge of the mine map. ”Water noise?”

”Supervisors were ordered not to expand toward it.”

The dwarf pulled an older survey from his own case. Its lowest edge ended far above Lucian’s copied passages. Nothing on it showed a lake, underground river, or flooded cavern.

”There should not be that much water beneath the eastern range.” Renn said.

”The order does not say how much there is.”

Renn accepted the correction.

The intermediary counted the remaining contract payment onto the table. Lucian checked the amount and stored it without ceremony.

”The Ledger will record the assignment as complete.” The man said. ”The clients received the required observations, copied records, and a direct confirmation of Helmar’s presence. The property remained unaware of the operation.”

That last fact carried more weight than the maps. Helmar now knew Rod’s party and Renn opposed him. He knew they had the ring. He did not know they had found Blackwater Reach and taken a look around.

Rod rose and offered Lucian his hand. ”Good work.”

Lucian shook it.

Dirk did the same. ”You gave us what we need to begin planning.”

”You need more than a plan.” Lucian said. ”The mine changed beyond the old survey. If you intend to reach the lowest levels, bring supplies for an underground expedition and assume Helmar controls every marked station.”

”Would you take that contract?” Renn asked.

”Not today.”

The answer was not a refusal. Lucian had just spent weeks traveling, watching, and infiltrating alone. A descent into the deepest mine required terms that did not yet exist.

Rod did not press him. ”If we offer one, it will come through the Ledger.”

Lucian left them with the maps.

Behind him, Renn aligned the old family survey with the copied mine plan. Rod’s party gathered around the table. The slaves had changed what waited below from a family search into something none of them could treat as a simple recovery.

Helmar had hundreds of warriors above ground and an unknown number below it. The route to his secret passed through people who entered in chains and never returned.

The group could not wait indefinitely while he strengthened Blackwater Reach.

They could not rush into it merely because they finally knew where to look.

Lucian descended into Ironcloud’s public streets with a completed contract, a larger payment than any previous assignment, and proof that his skills worked beyond Caldris. The Hidden Ledger’s record of the mission would not contain Helmar’s history or Renn’s inheritance. It would contain the facts that mattered to future clients.

He had crossed guarded wilderness, entered an occupied compound, recovered protected information, and left without anyone realizing he had been there.

That reputation would travel farther than his name.

The intermediary accompanied him as far as the street. ”The clients may offer the descent contract.”

”They may.”

”Would you refuse it?”

Lucian considered the question. ”Not because it is underground. I would need to know their objective, who enters with me, and whether rescuing the slaves is part of the work. Those are different missions if they pretend otherwise.”

”Renn will want the answer before he knows the cost.”

”Then he will wait.”

The man’s mouth moved in what might have been approval. ”Your standing with the Ledger has changed. Blackwater Reach proves you can operate outside a city without turning wilderness into an excuse for failure.”

Lucian heard the offer beneath the observation. More varied work would become available. Some clients would pay for a name they had never heard because the Ledger’s internal record supported it.

”I want several days before another long assignment.” Lucian said.

”Take them.”

Inside the meeting room, Rod’s party continued after Lucian left. Renn wanted to depart before Helmar finished settling into the property. Rod made him list what they would face: hundreds of warriors, active wards, concealed posts, an unmapped mine, unknown lower defenses, and captives whose presence changed any retreat.

”I am not saying we abandon them.” Rod said. ”I am saying we do not save anyone by entering unprepared and joining them.”

Renn looked down at the ring. ”Every day gives him more time.”

”Every day can give us more information too.” Lana said.

Dirk moved one of Lucian’s copied maps over the old survey. The passages aligned until the original record ended. Below that boundary, Helmar’s work descended toward the unexplained water noise.

”We know the approach now.” Dirk said. ”We know which supplies move inside and where the fixed defenses begin. That is more than we had yesterday.”

Nessa tapped the numbered slave groups. ”And we know not to treat the lowest mine like an empty ruin.”

Renn’s urgency remained, but it no longer controlled the room. They began a list of what an expedition required: underground provisions, ward knowledge, a route for freed captives, and a reason to believe the key could reach its destination without being taken in the first guarded corridor.

Whatever Helmar wanted was beneath the mine, beyond the old Ruskell maps, near water that should not exist.
