Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The first guard opened Counting Room Two.

Lucian watched through a gap between the floorboards and the support beam. The man causly glanced around the room before.

”Clear.” He called.

Deputy Inspector Marel entered with a clerk carrying the seizure manifests.

The inspector wore a dark municipal coat with silver binding at the cuffs. He placed one hand on the black ledger before sitting, opened it near the middle, and compared the most recent entries to the pages the clerk brought him.

Lucian remained beneath his feet.

The false ledger pressed against his ribs inside the flat case. He had reached the target. He had not completed the exchange, and the person most likely to recognize the substitution now held the original.

The warehouse floor filled with work.

Guards broke municipal seals on the first wagon. Clerks counted crates and recorded identifying marks. Laborers moved the cargo into three inspection lanes while Marel watched from the room above.

”Warehouse Six receives the metalwork.” The inspector told the clerk. ”The spirits remain here until the tax office signs. Put the alchemical stock in the lower cage.”

”The seizure order assigns all three to Warehouse Three.”

Marel tapped the black ledger. ”Then the order will agree with this book when we finish.”

The clerk stopped objecting.

Lucian did not change the contract because he heard evidence of the crime behind it. He needed the ledger intact. He did not need to follow the cargo, identify every participant, or turn an exchange into an arrest.

He used Mechanism Sense through the lift housing.

The platform rested at the lower station. The chain crossed a wheel beside the counting room and continued to a counterweight inside the wall. A separate cord operated the arrival bell. Lucian had disconnected that cord during his descent. The brake could stop the platform at any point, but its handle stood inside the room.

The inspector remained within arm’s reach of it.

Lucian waited.

Marel entered three false destinations into the ledger. He sanded the ink, closed the book, and left it on the desk while he descended to examine the alchemical crates personally. The clerk followed with the manifests.

One guard remained outside the counting room door.

Another stood beneath it.

Lucian moved along the beam toward the outer wall. Counting Room Two had been built over the inspection floor rather than against the warehouse’s stone. Metal brackets supported it from three sides. A narrow maintenance gap passed behind the room and reached the chain housing.

He entered the gap.

Quiet Step silenced his weight against the bracket. Broken Outline helped the movement vanish among workers looking at wagons, seals, and Marel below. The guard at the counting-room door faced the gallery. He did not see Lucian rise behind the room’s glass side panel.

The window latch connected to a simple rotating arm.

Mechanism Sense found it through the frame.

Lucian slid a hooked pick between the two panes and turned the arm. The window opened less than the width of his hand before its hinge threatened to squeal. He stopped, applied pressure near the lower pin, and opened it farther without forcing the dry upper joint to move.

He entered behind the storage cabinet.

The original ledger remained on the desk.

Lucian crossed the room, removed it, and placed the false copy in exactly the same position. Marel had left the cover angled toward the chair and the brass clasp open. Lucian duplicated both.

The guard outside shifted.

Lucian closed the flat case around the original and returned to the cabinet as the door opened.

The guard looked inside.

The room appeared unchanged. The black ledger waited on the desk. The document lift remained below. No door or cabinet had been disturbed.

He entered anyway.

Lucian could not reach the window without crossing his view. The space behind the cabinet ended at the wall. He placed one hand against the cabinet’s rear brace and felt its construction.

Four iron pins fixed it to the floor. A narrow gap separated the back panel from the stone. The panel itself rested in a grooved frame and could be removed for repairs.

Mechanism Sense did not make the space larger.

It showed him which two clips held the panel.

He released them while the guard walked around the desk.

The back panel shifted inward. Lucian entered the cabinet among spare paper, seal wax, and empty account boxes. He replaced the panel before the guard turned.

The man checked the document lift and touched the ledger cover. He had heard or sensed something, but nothing in the room justified calling Marel away from the seizure inspection.

He left and locked the door.

Lucian remained inside the cabinet.

The original ledger made the space tighter. He held it against his chest and waited until the guard’s steps moved toward the gallery rail.

Then he removed the rear panel again.

The locked door no longer mattered. Lucian used the window, closed its latch from outside with the hooked pick, and descended beneath the counting room.

He did not return toward the records office. Marel and the seizure crews occupied every route between him and the roof door. The canal side offered another exit.

Lucian crossed the support beams above the inspection floor. At the end, he reached the overhead crane track. Its maintenance carriage stood above the open loading bay with a chain hanging toward the empty dock.

The loading-gallery watchman saw the carriage begin to move.

Lucian had released its brake before climbing onto it. Gravity carried the carriage along the slightly lowered rail toward the canal. The wheels made enough noise to turn the watchman’s head.

”Who released that?”

Lucian crouched behind the chain housing while two workers looked upward. Broken Outline weakened the moment when one of them saw a dark shape beside the wheel. By the time the man pointed, the carriage had reached the outer bay.

Lucian caught the hanging chain and descended.

The watchman ran for the gallery stair. Lucian reached the dock first, crossed the narrow edge behind a moored barge, and entered the canal passage beneath the road. Quiet Step removed the splashes that would have marked which direction he chose.

No alarm rang out as he managed to remain unseen.

Marel would find the copy when he next opened it. Whether he recognized it was fake in minutes or months depended on which pages he checked. Lucian’s responsibility ended with making sure no damaged door or empty desk warned him sooner.

The locksmith examined the original the following morning.

He checked the brass corners, binding thread, municipal stamp, and three entries the client had identified. The false destinations Marel wrote during the seizure appeared on the newest page.

”Did anyone see you?” The locksmith asked.

”A warehouse worker may have seen someone on the crane carriage. He could not identify me. A guard entered the counting room while I was inside the cabinet.”

Lucian described the replaced roof lock, the unexpected shipment, the document lift, and every point where the contract differed from the information provided.

He did not claim that the new Skill made the mission simple.

The locksmith counted the full payment onto the bench.

”The original reaches the client today.” He said. ”Your assignment is complete.”

He returned Lucian’s bronze disk and added a second object beside it. The thin black key had no teeth. A shallow line shaped like an open book crossed one side.

”The disk identifies your probationary standing. The key admits you to a Ledger house. Do not lend either one.”

The address led Lucian to a secondhand shop in a district between the old inner wall and the western tram line.

Books, tools, mismatched dishes, old coats, and repaired furniture filled the public floor. A woman behind the counter appraised a silver tea service while Lucian entered. Nothing on the walls displayed the Hidden Ledger’s name.

Lucian showed the black key.

The woman pointed toward a narrow door beside the furniture racks. Its lock had no visible opening.

The key’s shallow mark pressed into a matching plate.

The wall released.

Stairs descended beneath the shop into rooms larger than the building above. The first chamber held a long counter divided among appraisal, payments, and secure messages. A fence inspected unregistered magical tools at one end. A document specialist compared three seals beneath a magnifying lens at the other.

Further rooms offered lock equipment, disguises, maps, discreet transport, and introductions to people who moved restricted goods through Caldris. Private booths allowed clients and members to speak without filling the main chamber with their business.

Nothing operated without a record. Members used numbers rather than public names, but the house tracked what it accepted, what it sold, and which representative authorized a service. The Hidden Ledger was willing to handle unlawful property. It was not willing to let one member steal from another under its roof and call the act professional work.

The contract boards occupied an entire wall.

Local assignments used white cards. Regional work used gray. Black cards required standing Lucian did not possess.

He read several white postings.

One requested observation of a warehouse supervisor. Another offered payment for recovering a stolen contract without alerting the person holding it. A third required entry into a noble garden to confirm whether a supposedly dead tree remained there.

Lucian moved to the gray board.

The travel requirements made most of the assignments impractical for a probationary member based in Caldris. One involved a shipment passing through the eastern portal states. Another named a ruined watchtower in Ravelle territory.

A smaller card carried the drawing of a ring with a dark green stone.

[Recovery: Ruskell family key.]

[Current holders: Five-person adventuring party operating from Crag Mountain. Human axe fighter, human elemental mage with black-cat familiar, human archer, male front-line defender, female healer.]

[Condition: Ring and setting intact.]

[Travel and independent recovery required.]

Lucian read the payment, considered the distance, and returned his attention to the local board. He did not know the Ruskells, the five adventurers, or why someone called a ring a key. The contract required resources and regional contacts he did not possess.

The woman from upstairs descended after completing the tea-service appraisal.

”The counter buys anything you have the right standing to sell.” She told him. ”The right standing is not the same thing as legal ownership. Read the house rules before testing the difference.”

Lucian accepted the slim rulebook she offered.

He took a seat beneath the contract board and began reading before selecting another job.
