Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Sixth Knot arrived at Stonecross without a Ruskell banner anywhere on its hull.

Rod considered that the first good sign, but they honestly didn’t think that Helmar’s connections extended to an adventuring group.

The compact airship descended toward a private freight platform above the eastern road. Its lower deck carried cargo doors wide enough for mining equipment. A smaller passenger cabin occupied the space behind the flight deck. The vessel lacked the size of the ships serving Stonecross’s scheduled routes, but it did not require another crew or a public departure board.

Five Knots secured it without assistance from the exchange workers.

Belda handled the dock lines. Orin inspected the landing clamps. Min remained near the engine controls until both lift assemblies settled. Kesh spoke with the platform signaler while Tessa completed the arrival record.

They moved like people using a vessel they had studied before trusting it with passengers.

Rod introduced his party by first name.

Tessa recognized three of them from the Sanctuary. ”You have run the first levels.”

”And spent enough time near the Skyyard to know your party’s name.” Rod said.

Five Knots had not met them socially. They had seen Rod’s group enter the Dwarven Airship and heard about its work in Deepvein. That distance helped. No shared contract, family connection, or dwarven employer linked the two groups before the charter request.

Renn joined them on the platform.

He carried one travel case and wore an ordinary assessor’s coat. The ring remained hidden. Two Stonecross guards stayed near the platform entrance after the attack at the exchange.

Tessa did not ask to see the object before hearing the threat.

”The charter request says a family authority may try to stop you.” She said. ”We need to know whether Ironcloud has issued a legal restriction.”

Renn provided the Stonecross incident report. It named Helmar’s household mark, the captured agent, and the attempted seizure inside the exchange. It also recorded that no Ironcloud warrant or intercity detention order existed against Renn or Rod’s party.

”My uncle controls the ancestral stronghold.” Renn said. ”He hired assassins to kill my father and recover a family key. He sent agents after me when the key reached Stonecross.”

”Will anyone attack this ship?” Kesh asked.

”They may try before we enter Ironcloud’s controlled airspace.”

”Are they likely to use another airship?”

”Helmar has access to family freight vessels. I do not know which are near Stonecross.”

Tessa looked toward Rod. ”If someone follows us, our job is reaching Ironcloud. We do not turn around to capture them or land somewhere else so your party can fight.”

”Agreed.”

”You follow our instructions aboard the ship. No attack leaves this deck without my approval unless someone has already boarded.”

Rod accepted that as well. The Five Knots were considered the number one adventurer based authority when it came to airships. Following their lead was for the best.

Five Knots approved the charter.

Before accepting payment, they prepared for the risk Renn disclosed. Belda moved the passenger emergency lines into the cabin where Rod’s party could reach them. Orin checked every exterior access hatch and added simple seals that would reveal tampering during a stop. Min filled the lift reserve instead of relying on the amount required for the direct route.

Kesh requested current registrations for Ruskell-owned airships operating near Stonecross. The exchange could not provide private routes, but it identified three freight vessels capable of matching The Sixth Knot through the mountains. Tessa memorized their hull descriptions without declaring any of them hostile.

Rod noticed the preparation. Five Knots had accepted his judgment that Helmar might pursue them. They had not replaced judgment with panic.

Renn paid through the Northspan Exchange rather than carrying the full amount. The payment covered a direct flight, passenger supplies, and the additional route work required to avoid scheduled stops. It did not purchase the crew’s participation in the Ruskell dispute after arrival.

The six passengers boarded.

The Sixth Knot’s passenger cabin contained eight bunks that folded against the walls, a central table, and narrow storage cabinets secured for flight. The room was not luxurious. It gave Rod’s party more space than the miniature craft used at the Sanctuary and less than a public passenger vessel.

Renn took the bunk farthest from the window.

The ship left Stonecross shortly after midday.

Kesh filed a legal route toward Ironcloud without listing every adjustment the crew might make along it. The platform signaler opened the eastern lane. Min increased lift, and Tessa carried the ship above the freight terraces before turning toward the mountains.

Stonecross fell behind them.

The first hour passed without another vessel matching their route.

Rod remained in the passenger cabin. He did not crowd the flight deck to watch Five Knots work. Lana allowed Midnight onto the upper observation rail after Belda approved the location. Dirk studied the terrain through the side windows. Dain and Nessa checked the cabin’s emergency equipment because neither wanted to learn where it was after an alarm.

Renn placed the ring on the table.

The dark green stone looked less important beneath ordinary cabin lamps than it had inside Helmar’s stronghold. No light moved through it. No system notice identified it when Renn touched the setting.

”My father told me it marked the eldest available member of our branch.” Renn said. ”His father wore it before him. I assumed that was the entire purpose.”

”Did you ever see him use it on anything?” Nessa asked.

”No. He removed it when working around machinery, but I never saw it leave his possession.”

Renn remembered one family story mentioning sealed holdings after a dispute among the earliest Ruskell branches. It did not describe a vault, door, or location. The story could refer to property records as easily as a physical chamber.

Renn closed his hand around the key.

The ship changed course.

No alarm sounded. The turn remained smooth enough that the ring did not move across his palm. Dirk noticed the mountain outside shifting in the wrong direction.

He went to the flight-deck door and waited until Tessa acknowledged him.

”Another vessel?” He asked.

”Possibly.” Kesh said.

He had placed two route charts beside each other. One showed their filed course. The second showed local supply lanes used by smaller Ironcloud ships.

A dark-hulled freight vessel had left Stonecross more than twenty minutes after the Sixth Knot. It followed a different filed destination, then changed altitude twice to remain behind the same intervening ridges.

”It could be avoiding the same wind.” Kesh said. ”It could also be using the mountains to keep us from seeing it.”

Tessa had turned into a narrower lane leading north before joining the main Ironcloud route farther east.

”Can it follow?” Dirk asked.

”If its navigator has the local charts.”

”Assume it does.”

Tessa looked at him. ”We already are.”

Dirk returned to the passenger cabin.

Five Knots handled the possible pursuit without asking Rod’s party to become another flight crew. Kesh selected the route. Tessa flew it. Min adjusted engine output for the climb through a steep current. Belda moved weight away from the side facing the wind. Orin watched the strain on the recently purchased vessel rather than demanding speed it could not safely produce.

The Sixth Knot crossed above the first ridge.

The dark vessel appeared behind them for less than a minute. It was larger, with a family freight configuration and enough engine power to close distance in open air. No visible crest identified it at that range.

It attempted the same climb.

Its heavier hull lost speed in the narrow current.

The Sixth Knot continued north and entered a descending lane between two peaks. Tessa reduced power rather than fighting the fall. The air carried them toward the main route faster than the other vessel could turn around the upper ridge.

When the dark hull appeared again, it remained farther behind.

Ironcloud’s outer traffic beacon became visible before it recovered the distance.

Kesh transmitted their registration and the Stonecross security report. He did not claim they were under attack. He reported an unidentified vessel repeatedly changing route behind a protected passenger charter.

Ironcloud control assigned the Sixth Knot an approach lane and directed the other ship toward a separate inspection beacon.

The dark vessel turned away.

No weapons had been fired. No one had attempted to board. Ironcloud still recorded the registration, route changes, and refusal to continue toward inspection.

Renn watched it disappear behind the mountain.

”Helmar will say it was an unrelated ship.”

”He can say that from outside Ironcloud.” Rod replied.

The dwarven capital opened ahead of them.

Renn had visited before, but not while carrying an object that might determine whether the Ruskell family survived Helmar’s plans. The six connected mountains no longer looked like a trade destination. They looked like the one place large enough to contain authorities Helmar could not privately command.

The Sixth Knot docked on Dorran’s eastern terrace.

Five Knots completed the vessel record while Rod’s party escorted Renn to the local security office. The Stonecross report and the possible pursuit did not prove every accusation against Helmar. They were enough to obtain protected lodging and place a warning against any private family order seeking Renn’s removal.

Renn did not ask Ironcloud to recognize him as head of a Ruskell branch.

He asked where the oldest family holdings were recorded.

The answer led them through two inner trains and a public lift to an archive built inside the central mountain.

On the way, Renn passed two Ruskell trade offices operating openly in Ironcloud. Neither office had authority to stop him. He did not enter or announce his presence. The stronghold protected him from Helmar acting without consequence; it did not make every person bearing the family crest trustworthy.

Clan property registers occupied the lower floors. Inheritance disputes, sealed holdings, foundation grants, and extinct family marks filled the levels above them. An archive clerk accepted Renn’s identification and the ring for a preliminary examination without taking either out of his sight.

He turned the setting beneath a magnifying lens.

”This is not a signet.” He said.

”We know it is a key.” Renn replied. ”We need to know what it opens.”

”The shape tells me it operates something. It does not tell me what.” The clerk said.

The green stone concealed a narrow internal shaft. Wear along one side showed that the ring had been inserted into a fitted mechanism more than once. The current Ruskell stronghold’s public plans contained no matching lock.

The clerk checked the maker’s cuts beneath the setting.

”This construction predates that stronghold.” She said. ”The record mark belongs to an Ironcloud workshop that closed before the modern clan registry was organized.”

She opened a request for the restricted foundation archive.

”If the Ruskells registered whatever this opened, the reference will be there. If they concealed it from Ironcloud, we begin with the workshop records and determine who commissioned the key.”

Renn placed the ring back on his finger for the first time since receiving it.

The archive request returned an estimated access time of one day.

Rod’s party accompanied him toward the protected lodging while Five Knots secured The Sixth Knot at Dorran’s dock.
