Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Dorran Stonewake waited beside The Sixth Knot when Five Knots returned from their morning supply run.

The dwarf sponsor stood beneath the airship’s starboard wing with two Ironcloud investigators and a sealed document case. Dock workers moved cargo around them without slowing. No one attempted to conceal the meeting, which told Tessa that Dorran wanted witnesses to see the authorities rather than imagine another private dispute.

”The manifests were genuine.” He said once the party descended.

Kesh glanced toward the investigators. ”All of them?”

”Enough.”

The taller investigator introduced himself as Inspector Marrik. He wore no armor beyond a reinforced coat and carried a bronze authority plate at his belt. His partner, a younger dwarf named Olna, held the case.

Neither asked whether Five Knots destroyed the slaver vessel.

Marrik began with the documents.

The recovered papers identified two storage sites, four payment brokers, and six airships that changed registrations whenever they crossed between regional authorities. Cargo descriptions concealed groups of people beneath classifications normally used for bonded labor crews, traveling performers, or transported prisoners.

”We found an occupied holding site yesterday.” Marrik said.

No one in Five Knots needed him to explain what occupied meant.

”How many?” Belda asked.

”Thirty-one alive. Five required immediate healing.”

Min looked toward the open docks. The sound of engines and loading cranes continued around them. ”And the people holding them?”

”Nine arrested. Three killed resisting. Others left before we arrived.”

Someone had warned them.

The warning had not saved everyone involved. A broker attempted to leave Ironcloud aboard a cargo lift using papers naming him as a furnace inspector. The occupation was real. The identity belonged to a dwarf dead for eleven years. Olna found the discrepancy before the lift reached the outer dock.

Another suspect disappeared through maintenance tunnels beneath a leased warehouse. Investigators found food, clothing, and prepared travel papers cached there, suggesting the escape route existed long before the raids. The network had planned for discovery even if it had not known when discovery would come.

The documents helped Ironcloud investigators follow the operation. They had not provided enough information to seal every exit before the raids began. By the time authorities reached the second warehouse, records were burning and the people responsible had abandoned it.

Olna opened the case and displayed several copied pages.

”We need you to identify which of these came from the vessel.” she said.

Tessa, Kesh, Belda, Min, and Orin examined them separately. The investigators compared their answers rather than allowing one person to speak for everyone. The procedure took nearly an hour.

Five Knots did not invent details.

They confirmed the documents, equipment, and goods taken from the ship. They admitted boarding after recognizing the vessel’s people as members of Helmar’s faction. They described discovering the restraints, false partitions, and records proving the airship served slavers.

Marrik eventually asked the question Helmar wanted answered.

”What happened to the ship?”

”It crashed after taking too much damage.” Tessa said.

That was true.

It did not explain who ensured the damaged vessel never limped back to a friendly dock. The investigators lacked wreckage, surviving crew, or an independent witness. Five Knots did not provide speculation that would transform suspicion into evidence against themselves.

Marrik closed his notebook.

”Helmar Ruskell claims you attacked a legitimate merchant vessel, murdered its crew, stole its cargo, and destroyed the ship to conceal piracy.”

”Does he have proof?” Kesh asked.

”He has accusations.”

”Then he has what we have against him.” Belda said.

Dorran gave her a warning glance. Their documents connected Helmar’s allies to the network. None contained a direct order signed by Helmar.

Marrik did not object to the comparison. ”His name does not appear. Three companies aligned with his branch do. Each claims criminals used its services without the owners’ knowledge.”

The legal distance had been constructed carefully. One Ruskell-controlled freight company leased warehouse space to an independent broker. That broker accepted payment from a shell company. The shell company owned nothing except contracts with the airships used for transport.

Marrik laid the chain out across a dockside workbench. Every individual link supported an ordinary explanation. Freight companies did not inspect every customer. Brokers moved payments for clients they never met. Shell companies owned vessels for tax and liability reasons.

Taken together, the pattern looked deliberate.

Looking deliberate was not enough to place Helmar in chains.

”If one arrested broker testifies that Helmar ordered it?” Tessa asked.

”Then we investigate the testimony and what the broker can prove.” Marrik said. ”A criminal saying a powerful dwarf commanded him is not proof by itself. It may be truth. It may also be an attempt to trade a famous name for leniency.”

Five Knots understood the frustration. Helmar used the same gap to accuse them. He could describe a likely crime, attach their names to it, and leave everyone else to mistake suspicion for evidence.

Helmar publicly condemned the discovered operation before the first raid ended.

His statement reached Ironcloud by midday. It described slavery as a violation of dwarven honor, promised cooperation with investigators, and accused unnamed pirates of exploiting the crime to justify theft and murder.

No sentence identified Five Knots.

Everyone understood who he meant.

”Can he bring charges?” Orin asked.

Olna answered. ”Anyone can file an accusation. Proving it is another matter. No registered vessel matches the construction you described. No owner has claimed the loss. No family has asked us to recover a crew.”

The slavers had hidden their ship too thoroughly to use its destruction openly.

”And Helmar?” Tessa asked.

”The same standard applies. Association is not command. We are tracing the companies, but we cannot arrest a family head because criminals paid businesses connected to him.”

Neither side possessed what it wanted.

Helmar could not prove Five Knots raided the vessel.

The documents could not yet prove Helmar controlled the slavers.

The investigators collected sworn versions of the party’s account and left with Dorran. The sponsor returned alone near sunset.

By then, word of the raids had spread through the air harbor.

Two captains stopped beside The Sixth Knot to thank the party without stating what for. A dockhand refused payment for replacing a damaged mooring clamp. Someone painted a small broken chain on a temporary cargo panel and disappeared before Belda found him.

Five Knots removed the painting before the next flight. It made the ship easier to identify and risked turning an investigation into a public legend before the facts settled.

Dorran approved.

”Being liked is useful.” He said. ”Being recognized from three docks away is not as helpful.”

He brought the next six-month schedule. Their sponsorship required a fixed number of supply runs during every period. The recent trouble had not changed the agreement.

The party did not want it changed. Owning an airship depended upon proving they could operate one as working adventurers rather than race enthusiasts playing with an expensive prize.

Dorran reviewed the damage records from their first hostile flight. The sponsor did not complain about every replacement part. Airships faced weather, creatures, raiders, and mechanical failures. His concern was whether Five Knots understood which risks belonged to the contract and which they created themselves.

”Boarding an armed vessel was not part of a supply run.” He said.

”Neither was being attacked by it.” Belda replied.

”The first fight was unavoidable. The second ship was not.”

No one tried to pretend otherwise.

Tessa explained that they confirmed the crew belonged to Helmar’s hostile faction before boarding. They intended to take records and equipment, not kill everyone aboard. Discovering the hidden restraints and slaving compartments changed what they were willing to leave behind.

Dorran listened without approving the raid.

”You found something worth exposing.” He said. ”That does not make every ship carrying a Ruskell flag your lawful prize. If anger chooses your targets, Helmar will eventually place an innocent crew where he knows you can see it.”

The warning struck harder because it did not accuse them of inventing what they found.

Five Knots agreed that future action required more than faction markings and Rod’s information. They would defend themselves, preserve evidence, and report suspicious vessels. They would not become pirates merely because their first raid uncovered people who deserved no protection.

Their next routes served mining outposts west of Ironcloud. The work was ordinary. Food, replacement tools, medicine, and machine parts would go out. Ore samples and damaged components would return.

Ordinary work brought its own value. The outposts learned The Sixth Knot’s name for reliable deliveries rather than battles. Crews at Ironcloud judged whether Five Knots arrived on schedule, protected fragile cargo, and returned with accurate weather reports. Those opinions would matter when the party eventually sought larger contracts or refinanced the unsponsored portion of their ship.

Min preferred engine problems that could be repaired with tools. Kesh preferred routes where the greatest enemy was a crosswind. Even Belda admitted that a flight ending without someone trying to kill them would be welcome.

”Helmar knows our routes.” Min said.

”He can learn the public ones.” Dorran replied. ”You will receive exact departure times shortly before loading. Ironcloud patrols cover the first portion. Outside that, you remain an adventuring party with an airship.”

Helmar’s first attackers had taught him that destroying their ship would not be easy. The vanished slaver vessel taught him they were willing to strike back when they found his people outside protected territory.

He might send another force.

He might decide that doing so created more risk than leaving them alone.

Five Knots could not plan every route around his decision.

They spent the following day preparing for the next supply run. Min inspected the engines. Belda checked rigging and replacement lines. Orin reinforced the boarding points that had taken damage in the earlier battle. Kesh reviewed weather patterns and alternate landing sites. Tessa met with the outpost representative and confirmed the cargo.

Late that evening, Dorran delivered a final message from Inspector Marrik.

A second holding site had been found through the payment records. It was empty when investigators arrived, but the structure contained enough evidence to connect it to three missing-person reports from distant settlements. The trafficking network was larger than one ship and smaller than it had been before Five Knots took the documents.

The investigators also returned several legal goods taken from the slaver vessel after documenting them. Five Knots surrendered anything whose ownership could be traced to a victim or another company. They retained only the equipment already cleared as unregistered ship supplies and the payment awarded for producing the records.

The money went toward repairs, and some was saved for future upgrades. None of them objected. Their reward was not a chest divided into five shares. It was keeping their airship flying.

The Sixth Knot departed Ironcloud the next morning carrying medicine and drill parts instead of stolen papers. Dock workers raised hands as the ship cleared the mountain.

Five Knots returned the gestures and flew their route.
