Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucian left the freight wagon at the mining junction with enough witnesses to remember that he had gone north and no reason for any of them to care.

The road beyond the junction divided around a weathered post. One branch followed the river east toward three working mines. The other climbed into the northern mountains before disappearing beneath a fall of loose stone. The damaged sign still carried the name of a settlement that existed on current maps. Blackwater Reach did not appear anywhere.

Lucian took the northern branch until the wagon sounds faded behind him. Then he left the road.

Three days of rain had softened the slopes. A careless traveler would have left a path visible from the valley below. Lucian crossed exposed soil on stone, used streams where their direction suited him, and avoided the game trails most likely to attract traps or watchers. He did not activate Stealth merely because the ground was empty. The skill concealed his body, not the bent grass beneath his boots.

The route Dirk had called possibly impassable deserved the warning. A section of the ridge had broken away years ago, leaving a wall of dark stone above the river. Lucian climbed until the rock narrowed to a shelf barely wide enough for his boots, crossed it on hands and knees, and found the old path again beyond the break.

Clouds hid the peaks by the time he reached the first overlook.

He stopped well short of the crest and crawled the final distance beneath thorny mountain brush. The valley beyond appeared gradually through gaps in the leaves.

Blackwater Reach followed a bend in the river. The oldest map showed six buildings around a central yard, a small landing shelf, and a mine entrance at the base of the eastern cliff. The valley before Lucian held more than twice that number.

The original structures remained, although new stonework covered portions of their walls. Warehouses occupied the western end. Two long barracks stood beside workshops whose chimneys released thin gray smoke. A square administrative building overlooked the yard from a raised shelf, and a much larger structure had been built against the eastern cliff.

Lucian watched that structure longest.

Its roof concealed the mine entrance marked on the old survey. Wagons entered through doors tall enough for loaded ore carts and disappeared from sight. Empty wagons did not emerge at regular intervals. Whatever moved below was not a normal mining shift.

He recorded the time and turned his attention to the guards.

The obvious patrols wore Ruskell colors. They moved in pairs along the yard, the river road, and the wall around the airship shelf. Their routes overlapped but did not cover the northern ridge. The men who designed them expected intruders to follow the road or river.

The less obvious watchers covered the gaps.

A patch of shadow beneath an abandoned crane changed shape when a guard lifted a spyglass. A hut above the western approach had no smoke and no reason to be occupied, yet sunlight flashed against metal behind its shutters. Lucian found a third post dug into the slope almost level with him. Two men sat beneath a camouflaged roof and watched the ridge through narrow openings.

He withdrew before either turned his way.

The northern approach was not unguarded. Its guards were simply intended to remain unseen.

Lucian moved back down the slope and circled west. By dusk he had located four observation posts. Each covered a different approach, and each could signal the compound without leaving its position. The watchers changed at intervals that did not match the yard patrols.

That made sense. Anyone counting only the uniformed guards would believe there was a short period when the western road went unwatched. Anyone using it would cross between two concealed posts.

Lucian spent the night in a narrow stone cleft above the river. He ate cold food, slept in short intervals, and listened to the compound below.

The night shift did not reduce activity as much as he expected. Carts continued moving into the cliffside building. Hammering sounded from somewhere underground, too deep and muted to come from the workshops. Twice, a low vibration traveled through the stone beneath him. It lasted only seconds and left the water trembling along the riverbank.

He added it to his notes without guessing what caused it.

Before dawn, pale blue lines appeared on stones around the outer buildings. The lines brightened whenever someone crossed between them. Workers wore small metal disks on cords beneath their coats. A guard touched his disk to one of the stones before passing. The light dimmed around him and returned once he moved beyond it.

Runic movement markers.

Lucian watched the next twelve crossings. Every authorized worker carried a disk. Guards checked one another at the beginning of a shift, and two laborers were stopped when their disks failed to suppress the nearest marker. A dwarf from the workshop replaced one token and struck the other against a testing plate before allowing either man onward.

Stealing a disk would not be enough. Its absence would be discovered, and the workers appeared to be assigned to specific zones.

Lucian drew the marker positions instead.

They formed overlapping boundaries around the mine structure, warehouses, and administrative building. The lines were weaker near delivery lanes where carts crossed repeatedly. At those points, the stones were set farther apart to prevent the wards from reacting to animals and cargo. Guards compensated by watching the lanes.

There would be no effortless entrance.

By the second afternoon, Lucian understood the visible rhythm of the compound. Ore and timber arrived by river road. Food came in covered wagons from the west. Finished metal pieces moved from the workshops to the landing shelf. The airship dock had been repaired recently, although the archive record Renn found claimed a rockslide destroyed it years earlier.

Someone had spent heavily to make the abandoned property useful again.

The supply volume did not match the visible workers.

Lucian counted the meals carried from the kitchens, the sacks unloaded at the warehouses, and the water barrels sent into the mine. Even allowing generous rations, Blackwater Reach fed far more people than occupied its barracks and workshops.

Late that afternoon, a covered wagon arrived with six mounted guards.

It carried no company symbol. Heavy canvas concealed its sides, and a second sheet hung inside the rear opening. The driver presented a document at the western checkpoint. Two guards inspected beneath the wagon and opened the front portion of the canvas without exposing the interior to the road.

The escort remained around it all the way to the mine structure.

Lucian shifted to a lower observation point and waited.

When the wagon reached the doors, four men emerged from the building carrying chains. The inner canvas moved. A hand appeared briefly near the rear flap before someone dragged it back.

The wagon entered. The doors closed.

It emerged twenty minutes later with its canvas tied open and no passengers inside.

Lucian marked the wagon, the guards, and the time.

The next day, a second covered wagon followed the same route. This one entered shortly after dawn. Through a gap between the outer and inner canvas, Lucian saw a row of shackled ankles.

Slaves were being taken into the mine.

He watched until the wagon returned empty. No matching group came out through another gate. None appeared in the yards, barracks, or workshops.

Their destination lay below.

Lucian had come for patrols, wards, entrances, and any records he could copy without exposing his visit. The slaves made the records more important. They did not change the limits of the assignment. Entering an unknown mine alone would turn a scouting contract into a rescue attempt with no plan and no knowledge of how many people waited underground.

He examined the administration building again.

It sat above the main yard with doors facing south and east. Clerks entered through the south door after presenting their tokens. Couriers and delivery workers used the east entrance, where a narrow covered passage joined the building to a records annex. The movement markers along that passage reacted constantly to carts, document cases, and workers.

At the evening shift change, the day clerks left in groups. Night clerks arrived alone or in pairs. A kitchen worker crossed from the dining hall with two covered trays and returned twenty minutes later carrying empty dishes. A cleaner entered after dark with a cart full of linens, lamp oil, ash buckets, and soap.

The cleaner’s route interested Lucian. No guard searched every shelf. They checked his token, looked beneath the largest bins, and let him continue.

Lucian followed the man’s movements across two nights. The cart remained inside for nearly three hours. During that time, the cleaner opened upper windows to release dust and chemical smells. One window faced the cliff rather than the yard. A drain below it carried wash water down a stone channel toward the river.

The cliffside window lay inside the ward boundary. The channel passed beneath it.

Lucian did not enter the water. The channel was too shallow to conceal a person, and wet clothing would announce his presence through every corridor. Instead, he traced the ward line above it.

The marker stone nearest the drain had shifted when the channel was repaired. Its carved face pointed several degrees away from the next marker, leaving a narrow wedge where their coverage did not overlap. The gap ended before the wall, but the cleaner’s open window sat above it.

Lucian tested nothing that night.

He watched the gap during rain, daylight, and the next shift change. No blue line crossed it. No guard examined the repaired channel. The route required a climb up an exposed stone wall, but the eastern cliff hid it from most of the yard.

The remaining view came from one concealed observation post.

Lucian spent the next day learning when its watcher turned toward the airship shelf. Every arriving vessel drew the spyglass for at least a minute. Freight unloading held it longer.

He did not need the route to remain open forever.

He needed one busy evening, an open window, and three minutes.

At sunset, a cargo airship descended toward the repaired shelf. Workers crossed the yard to meet it. The cleaner opened the cliffside window.

Lucian left his observation point and moved downhill.

He carried no copy of Renn’s family records. If searched, his pack would identify him as a traveler prepared for rough country, not an agent hunting a Ruskell secret. The paper intended for maps had been cut from an ordinary merchant’s ledger, and the tools at his belt could belong to any scout.

Blackwater Reach had defenses meant to catch intruders who arrived believing an abandoned property would be careless. Lucian had spent four days learning the opposite. Now he would discover whether the people inside were equally disciplined.
