Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Demer Holt rented the Sanctuary meeting room under his own name.

The dungeon already possessed that name. Giving an inn clerk a false one would not change the visitor record created when Demer entered Crag Mountain. It would only add a lie to information the Dungeon Master could verify.

The declared purpose required more care.

[Private guild discussion.]

No guild name appeared on the reservation. Nine people arrived separately during the following hour and presented the room token rather than asking for Demer. The last two entered together after walking past the inn once to see whether anyone watched the door.

The room contained one table, twelve chairs, a wash basin, and walls protected against casual listening. Sanctuary rules remained printed beside the inner latch. Weapons could not be used against another person. Damage to the room or attempts to defeat its privacy wards would result in removal and penalties.

The protection made the meeting safer.

It also reminded everyone that the dungeon controlled the room.

Demer waited until the door closed.

”We have three confirmed facts from our first two days.” He said. ”The public combat levels do not share space between parties. The Sanctuary prevents violence outside designated areas. Corathen is persistent and large enough that ordinary observation will take months.”

A broad-shouldered man at the far end of the table leaned back.

Cassor Venn had entered the seven-day challenge with a religious order that refused to recognize any dungeon as a legitimate living power. The order had supplied fewer fighters than the private guilds and spent more time arguing over objectives. Cassor carried no holy symbol now. He did not need one for the people in the room to know why he had come.

”You needed two days to confirm the safe zone is safe?” Cassor said.

”I needed two days to learn where it ends.”

Demer placed a purchased Sanctuary map on the table.

Public streets surrounded the central square. Portals led toward Max’s first four levels and Corathen. Then there is the Undercity, services, housing, and attractions. Administrative buildings appeared without interior plans. The maps identified no core chamber and no route labeled private dungeon infrastructure.

”The first four levels form a new copy for each party,” Demer continued. ”Searching them may reveal how the dungeon is built. It will not put us in the same physical corridor as the core.”

Demer had assembled the group from two sources. Cassor’s people believed dungeons should be eradicated wherever they appeared. They spoke of cores as infections and described every bargain between a dungeon and nearby settlements as delayed surrender.

The others had no interest in doctrine.

An intact dungeon core could be sold for an amount that made ordinary monster contracts irrelevant. Buyers included kingdoms, great guilds, artificer colleges, and wealthy people who never explained what they intended to do with one. Capturing a core also granted enough class advancement to move successful hunters several levels at once. Even divided among a party, the reward could replace years of dangerous work.

Demer wanted both.

He had not crossed several political borders to prove a belief.

”The public levels restore after damage.” He said. ”Destroying the levels themselves tells Max Clarkson we are here and spends our resources without exposing the core. The challenge army fought for seven days with daily restoration and failed. We do not possess that protection now.”

Cassor looked toward the window. Adventurers crossed the street below carrying supplies toward public portals. A family had stopped beside a guide board while two children compared pictures of Fey Nights creatures.

”They bring it money.” Cassor said. ”They train in its buildings, buy its rewards, and praise it for returning what it takes from them. Every person in that street is helping a dungeon grow strong enough to consume the region around it.”

”Corathen already contains more people than the region around Crag Mountain.” Said one of Demer’s associates.

Cassor turned toward him. ”That scale is the danger. No settlement should depend upon a core capable of swallowing another country.”

”To the rest of us, that scale means the estimates are low.” Demer said.

Cassor’s expression hardened. ”You see a weapon growing beneath your feet and ask who will pay the highest price for it.”

Demer did not deny it. The accusation described his purpose accurately.

The argument separated the table more clearly than the seating.

Cassor’s faction considered cooperation with a dungeon idiotic. They held equal contempt for visitors who willingly cooperated with a dungeon and local rulers who allowed the entrance to remain open. The dungeon’s services did not matter. Resurrection, training, trade, and safe roads were bait offered by a creature that survived by drawing people inside.

Demer’s faction did not care whether Max and his visitors cooperated for another hundred years. If the arrangement made the core larger and more valuable, it improved their intended return. They wanted the core intact, transportable, and sold before a kingdom could seize it without paying them.

Both factions required the same thing first.

They had to find it.

Demer laid out the records carried back from the challenge.

The final search in Corathen had reached a restricted transit junction. The ring there had been destroyed before it could carry anyone farther. Max appeared personally after searchers crossed sealed boundaries. None of that proved the core had stood on the other side. It proved only that the route mattered enough to defend.

”We start in Corathen.” Demer said. ”Three of us retrace the challenge route as ordinary visitors. No threats, no forced doors, and no attempt to enter a sealed district. We identify what survived and where public movement stops.”

”The ring was destroyed.” Someone said.

”Roads reached it. Supply depots supported it. People worked near it. A missing destination leaves records even when the portal is gone.”

Cassor tapped the Sanctuary map. ”The administrative buildings are closer.”

”They are also watched.”

”Everything here is watched.”

No one challenged that statement. Dungeon notices explained that public spaces were subject to safety observation. The warning did not describe every sense available to a core within its own territory.

Demer assigned two people to the Undercity. Hizon’s businesses and the defense dungeon were openly connected to Max’s larger dungeon, but the exact relationship between the two authorities remained unclear to visitors. The pair would purchase goods, attempt the public attractions, and learn whether service passages connected to anything beyond Hizon’s commercial territory.

Two more would remain in the Sanctuary. They would track which administrative buildings Max used, where employees entered, and which portals carried staff rather than visitors.

The work required no invented identities. Thousands of visitors asked for maps, purchased equipment, reserved rooms, or waited near portal queues every day. Demer’s people would do the same and record only what an ordinary visitor could see. If a clerk refused a question, they would leave. A rejected request created information without creating a violation.

Cassor objected to the pace.

”You are describing months of watching clerks while the dungeon grows stronger.”

”A core that sells for more than a city district justifies patience.” Demer said. ”Use that time to find something we cannot buy from a public map.”

Cassor stood. The room still changed as Cassor’s three supporters straightened with him.

”When we find it,” Cassor said. ”the core is destroyed. No sale. No buyer. Nothing remains for another Dungeon Master to recover.”

Demer stayed seated.

”Capturing it is the reason six people at this table paid for the journey. Destroying it would erase most of the reward.”

”The class advancement remains.”

”For whoever lands the final blow. An intact capture rewards the registered group and leaves an asset we can divide.”

The difference had existed before Crag Mountain. Distance had allowed both sides to avoid settling it. Inside the Sanctuary, with public portals visible from the window, the future decision could no longer be treated as a detail.

Cassor returned to his chair.

”We find the core together.” He said. ”After that, no agreement requires me to help you preserve it.”

”No agreement requires me to let you destroy it.”

The temporary alliance survived because neither side could accomplish the first step alone.

It nearly failed because one of Cassor’s followers had already ignored Demer’s instructions.

The man waited until the assignments were distributed before mentioning the map office.

”A clerk may remember me.” He said.

Demer stopped gathering the challenge records. ”Why?”

”I asked for the oldest Corathen transit maps.”

”Those are public.”

”I also asked which route led from the destroyed ring to the Dungeon Master’s private chambers.”

Silence held the room.

”What purpose did you give?” Demer asked.

”Historical comparison. The clerk refused. An adventurer behind me decided the question was suspicious and involved himself.”

Cassor’s follower described the exchange with no sign that he understood how close he had come to naming their purpose. The other adventurer had said the destroyed ring lay beyond public travel and asked why a historian needed Max’s private rooms. Cassor’s man responded that visitors who cooperated with dungeons would eventually learn what their trust purchased.

”Those were your words?” Cassor asked.

”Approximately.”

”Did you mention the core?” Demer said.

”No.”

”Did you threaten anyone?”

”The safe zone would have stopped me if I had.”

That answer did not reassure anyone.

The map office possessed the visitor’s name and a request connecting a restricted transit ring to Max’s private chambers. The dungeon’s own record could link that name to challenge participation. The ordinary adventurer possessed the same face and enough of the conversation to repeat it.

They had not exposed a core-hunting plan.

They had created the first reason for Sanctuary security to look for one.

Demer took the man’s assignment away.

”You leave through the public entrance this afternoon. Take a room at the mountain settlement and wait. Do not argue with the clerk again, do not warn our other contacts, and do not attempt to learn whether anyone follows you.”

”Sending me away confirms suspicion.”

”Keeping you in the Sanctuary gives you another chance to turn suspicion into proof.”

Cassor supported the decision after a pause. His cause depended upon reaching the core more than it depended upon defending one careless follower.

The meeting ended early.

Maps returned to separate cases. Assignments were reduced to ordinary visitor activities that required no restricted access. The Corathen team would leave the following morning. The Undercity pair joined the line forming for The Ant Hill so their first appearance there would match the reason they gave for visiting.

Demer paid for the room and left alone.

At the Sanctuary map office, the clerk from the earlier exchange completed a routine security notice. It contained the visitor’s name, his question about private chambers, and the contemptuous remark overheard by another adventurer. The clerk marked the concern as unconfirmed because no rule had been broken and no core had been mentioned.

The notice entered the day’s review queue with six reports about attempted theft, two damaged inn rooms, and one visitor repeatedly testing the edge of an Arena boundary.
