After passing the treacherous corner, the mining tunnels ahead gave way to a fork in the road, with three paths appearing before Faraway.

At this moment, the guidance of the Spirit Candle appeared once more.

[Light the Milestone Spirit Candle]

[Respawn point recorded]

The three paths were easy enough to distinguish: one led down, one led up, and the middle one appeared relatively flat.

Faraway wasn’t one for indecision. After a brief observation, he decided to explore the paths in order, from left to right.

First was the downward path. The ground here, both dust and loose ore, looked compacted—a sign of frequent foot traffic.

However, that wasn’t the most important thing. What mattered was that the path before Faraway was growing increasingly narrow.

Soon, a sound drew Faraway’s attention.

The faint sound of clashing—it seemed to be the clamor of a battle.

After a moment of thought, Faraway took out his Dagger and the Devil Fish Tail Staff and continued forward.

Before long, he arrived at a relatively spacious mining area and saw the source of the noise.

He was right. It was a battle.

A Defender Captain was leading three Soldiers in battle against a group of Exiled Prisoners.

There seemed to be another path behind the Defender Captain. It was likely guarding something or someone.

This was most likely the target of the rioting Exiled Prisoners.

Although the Defender Captain and its Soldiers were not at a disadvantage, the sheer number of Exiled Prisoners was causing them some trouble.

After checking the information on both sides, Faraway raised his hand and unleashed a Blood Stone Burst.

BOOM! With a bloody explosion, he instantly changed the tide of battle.

Several Exiled Prisoners were severely injured, collapsing and turning to Ashes. The Defender Captain was also forced back several steps before it could steady itself.

The Exiled Prisoners who were caught on the edge of the blast and survived scrambled to their feet, roaring at Faraway as they turned to attack him.

But the Defender Captain and its Soldiers swung their Greatswords, interrupting some of the Exiled Prisoners’ movements.

Faraway remained calm. He activated Warfire and unleashed another charged Blood Stone Burst.

His target wasn’t the Exiled Prisoners, but the Defender Captain.

BOOM.

Struck again, the Defender Captain collapsed to the ground.

At this point, Faraway put away his Wooden Staff, drew his Dagger, and began clearing out the nearby Exiled Prisoners.

With flashes of cold steel, he weaved through his enemies. In just a few swift movements, several Exiled Prisoners collapsed, dissolving into Ashes.

Faraway raised his hand again, the Devil Fish Tail Staff appearing in it as he gathered another Blood-colored Magic Ball.

Meanwhile, the Defender Captain had yet to recover from its fall.

The next moment, the Magic Ball detonated, and the Defender Captain was slammed down for the last time.

The remaining enemies were stragglers, incapable of putting up a fight, and Faraway quickly finished them off.

[You have killed the Defender Captain]

[You have killed an Exiled Prisoner]

[...]

A series of kill notifications appeared in Faraway’s vision, but he paid them no mind. After collecting the loot, he headed straight for the passage that had been guarded.

He hadn’t walked for long when the path came to a dead end, blocked by a wall of dirt and rock.

But when Faraway reached the dead end, he discovered a vertical shaft leading down. A ladder was fixed to the stone wall, descending into the pitch-blackness below.

After confirming the ladder was sturdy, Faraway climbed down.

The ladder was very long.

It took Faraway several minutes of climbing before he saw the ground below.

Once on the ground, he began to observe his surroundings.

This place was a prison.

Both sides of the passage were lined with natural caves that had been turned into cells with prison doors. However, the ones closest to him were all empty.

However, as Faraway advanced, he soon saw cells that were occupied.

Strangely, the Exiled Prisoners inside were already dead, their bodies rotten.

Faraway continued forward, observing as he went.

SQUISH...

He stopped abruptly as he reached the cell at the far end of the passage.

He felt like he had stepped on something slimy.

Looking down, he saw a corpse lying next to him. From its attire, it was easy to identify as a [Defender Captain].

What Faraway had just stepped on was its rotten palm.

With a calm expression, he pulled his foot back and picked up a small metal plate from within the rotten flesh.

[Acquired: Gulard Decree]

[Gulard Decree]

[Type: Special Item]

[Content: This sinner must be kept under strict guard. Do not make contact, not even to speak... Monitor its condition at all times. Report any abnormalities immediately.]

[Explanation: A special decree from Gulard. It contains a special message and is used to convey orders.]

”...”

After reading it, Faraway put the decree away, a thoughtful look in his eyes.

At that moment, he felt the guidance of the Spirit Candle once more.

He followed the guidance to a relatively open area, where the Candlekeeper appeared once more.

But this time, the Candlekeeper acted differently.

He glanced toward the end of the prison, then looked at Faraway and offered a warning.

”Be careful.”

This made Faraway’s eyes narrow slightly.

After lighting the Spirit Candle, Faraway got to his feet and slowly approached the end of the prison passage.

Compared to the other cells, the door here was clearly thicker and sturdier.

”Huuuh... huuuh...”

The faint sound of heavy breathing drifted from within.

Besides that, there were also muffled, indistinct words.

”...Sacri...fice...”

However, even the ”translation” provided by the game offered only that small snippet.

Inside the pitch-black prison cell, he could glean no other information aside from the voice he had just heard.

He stared at the heavy cell door, thinking for a moment, before pulling an item from his inventory—something dropped by the Defender Captain.

[Prison Key]

[Type: Item]

[Explanation: A key found on a Defender Captain, used to open the prison doors.]

He inserted the key into the lock.

CLICK. The cell door swung open.

The heavy breathing from inside suddenly stopped.

With a calm expression, Faraway stepped into the cell.

The illuminating Candlefire on his person flared to life, its faint glow finally allowing him to see the face of the creature before him.

However, the sight of this creature made even Faraway—a man who had seen his fair share of horrors—frown deeply.

Blackened, festering eye sockets, a pulpy mess where its nose should be, a mouth with rotted-away jaws... all stood in stark contrast to the pale flesh on the rest of its body.

What was even stranger was that, despite having no eyes, it was able to face Faraway with unnerving precision, giving him the distinct feeling that it was staring right at him...
