Liu Zhu guessed, ”Could it be that they haven’t finished calculating the scores yet?”

Zhao Yuan thought the same. Although the exams for the Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Ancient Texts had been difficult, he’d done quite well. It was impossible for him not to have a score.

Wu Yan suggested, ”Third Brother, don’t you have the phone numbers for the teachers of those two classes? Give them a call and ask what’s going on.”

”You’re right, I should give them a call.” Zhao Yuan took out his phone, found the number for his Medical Ancient Texts teacher, Ma Hanqing, and dialed.

The phone had barely rung for a few seconds before the call connected. Before Zhao Yuan could even ask, he heard Ma Hanqing chuckle and say, ”Zhao Yuan, are you calling to ask about your Medical Ancient Texts exam score?”

”Yes,” Zhao Yuan replied. ”I just logged into the school’s official website to check my grades and found that my scores for Medical Ancient Texts and Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine haven’t been entered. Teacher Ma, what’s going on?”

Ma Hanqing answered, ”The scores weren’t tallied because we couldn’t grade your two exam papers, so we just decided not to.”

Forget Ma Hanqing and the others; even medical experts like Xiao Xianlin and Liu Mingzhang were utterly captivated by Zhao Yuan’s two exam papers.

The decision not to grade them also came from these two Great Gods of the medical field.

Xiao Xianlin and Liu Mingzhang’s original words were: ”Zhao Yuan’s exam papers are absolutely exquisite! These aren’t just exams anymore; they’re top-tier classics of the Medical Family, a beacon to light our path! We can only learn from these papers; we are simply not qualified to grade them!”

The words of the two Great Gods from the medical world received the unanimous approval of all the teachers from the Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Ancient Texts departments. And so, Zhao Yuan’s exam scores for these two subjects became a dash—because no one dared, and no one was qualified, to grade his papers.

But Zhao Yuan didn’t know any of this inside information. He asked, puzzled, ”Why couldn’t you grade them?”

Ma Hanqing didn’t reveal the truth, instead choosing to keep him in suspense. ”You’ll find out this afternoon.”

Zhao Yuan wouldn’t let it go and asked several more times, but Ma Hanqing was dead set on keeping him in suspense. He had no choice but to give up and ask a different question. ”Teacher Ma, you can at least tell me if I failed the Medical Ancient Texts class, right?”

Ma Hanqing nearly died laughing at his question. He burst out laughing and said, ”Please, don’t joke with me like that. If you, Zhao Yuan, failed, then no one in this world could possibly pass the Medical Ancient Texts exam.”

”Alright, as long as I passed,” Zhao Yuan said, resigned.

After hanging up, he called the teacher for his Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine class. However, it seemed this teacher had conspired with Ma Hanqing. He also kept Zhao Yuan in suspense and refused to tell him the truth. When Zhao Yuan asked if he had passed, the teacher burst into laughter even louder than Ma Hanqing’s, as if he had just heard the funniest joke in the world.

His three brothers had overheard Zhao Yuan’s phone calls. When he hung up, they all came over to comfort him.

Liu Zhu clapped Zhao Yuan on the shoulder. ”As long as you didn’t fail, it’s all good.”

Wu Yan, however, said, ”The way I see it, Third Brother, you must have done extremely well. That’s why the teachers don’t dare to give you a score so easily. This is a good thing!”

Wang Rongfeng nodded in agreement. ”I think what Old Fourth said makes sense. You don’t have scores for Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Ancient Texts not because you didn’t finish, but because you did so well they couldn’t even give you a grade.”

”I hope so,” Zhao Yuan sighed, then began to wonder. ’Teacher Ma said I’ll find out why they couldn’t grade my paper this afternoon... I’m really curious what’s going to happen then.’

”We’re curious too!” Liu Zhu, Wang Rongfeng, and Wu Yan said in unison.

The minutes ticked by.

For those who were waiting, these few hours were excruciating.

This was the case for Lu Ping. He was restless all morning, checking his phone for the time every few minutes and constantly muttering to himself, ”Why isn’t it noon yet? Time is passing way too slowly!”

When the time reached eleven-thirty, Lu Ping started refreshing the webpage nonstop, hoping the class rankings might leak out early so he could see them sooner.

Around this time, Lu Ping’s lackeys trickled into his dorm room one after another to wait with him for the class rankings to be announced. The group was tense and apprehensive, as if awaiting a judgment from fate itself.

Finally, the clock struck twelve.

As Lu Ping refreshed the page one more time, a long list of rankings appeared.

The lackeys gathered around him immediately started shouting in excitement:

”It’s out! It’s out!”

”The class rankings are finally out!”

”I see my name! Rank 178 in the entire year. That’s decent enough.”

”178 is great, okay? I’m only ranked 234.”

Lu Ping took a deep breath and looked toward the very top of the class ranking list.

There, he saw his own name. However, the rank in front of it was not the ’1’ he had imagined, but a ’2’.

’Second place? How is that possible!’ An immense sense of disappointment instantly welled up in Lu Ping, followed by a thick wave of fury.

He didn’t even notice who was in first place. He shot to his feet, slammed his hand on the desk, and roared, ”I got perfect scores in every single subject! How could I possibly be second? Even if someone else also got perfect scores on everything, we should be tied for first! This ranking is unreasonable! I’m definitely going to complain to the department!”

Lu Ping’s sudden outburst startled his lackeys. They hurriedly tried to calm him down while turning their gazes to the computer, wanting to see who exactly had taken first place and what their score was.

When they got a clear look at the first-place student’s name and score, they were all stunned.

”What’s going on?”

”First place is Zhao Yuan? I thought he didn’t do well on these finals?”

”Hey, look! Zhao Yuan’s scores for Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Ancient Texts aren’t numbers, but a dash. What’s going on with that?”

Hearing his lackeys’ words, Lu Ping finally turned his gaze to the name that had pushed him down and taken the top spot.

Then, he saw the name ’Zhao Yuan,’ and behind it, that strange list of scores.

”What’s going on?” Lu Ping’s mouth fell open, completely baffled. ”In the class rankings, every other student’s scores are listed in detail. Why are Zhao Yuan’s Basic Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical Ancient Texts scores just a dash?”

One of the lackeys ventured a bold guess, ”Could it be that Zhao Yuan did so poorly in those two classes that the teachers were too embarrassed to post his scores, so they just put a dash instead?”
