Chapter 2728: Chapter 2729: The Merfolk’s Choice

The great elder had already been beaten half to death, and Xiaoyue struggled to go to his side. Bai Ruozhu simply helped her over, allowing everyone to see the elders who had been beaten terribly.

Someone exclaimed in shock, ”How could these outsiders be so strong, even beating the high and mighty elders?”

Xiaoyue glared at the great elder, angrily saying, ”You lied to me! You forced me to drink that Poisonous Blood, I’m in pain all over every day, I can’t sleep at night because of the pain, and I’m constantly coughing up blood. But I kept gritting my teeth and persevering, because you said it could save my parents!”

She began to cry, saying in agony, ”I watched my friends die one by one around me, and in my worst moments, I even considered ending it all, but I held on because you said it could save my parents. But you lied to me!”

She didn’t have the strength to hit anyone, but she had nowhere to vent her hatred. She spat at the great elder, her blood-stained saliva landing on his face.

Other girls also walked over, angrily glaring at the great elder and the others, ”It was all lies. Xiaoyue held on for so long, yet her parents didn’t survive, weren’t we holding on in vain?”

They didn’t dare to hit anyone, but their hearts were filled with anger they couldn’t quell, and they mimicked Xiaoyue by spitting at the great elder and the others.

Some people were still afraid of the elders, hurriedly pulling their daughters back. Xiaoyue’s uncle sensed something was wrong and pointed angrily at the great elder, saying, ”You fooled us by choosing children as saints only to feed them Poisonous Blood and torture them? They were only five or six years old when chosen as saints, so young, how could you do it?”

The great elder’s eyes showed a hint of hate, ”What do you understand? I did it for the clan, so that everyone could rid themselves of the Curse and live to a ripe old age!”

Bai Ruozhu kicked him in the chest, ”You talk nonsense! Talking about the clan, you did it for the small group of aristocrats. Why don’t you tell everyone how the saint girl helps everyone to extend their lives?”

”I told them there would be sacrifices. Merfolk have their sense of honor; they understand my intentions.” The great elder struggled to speak.

”Nonsense!” Bai Ruozhu gritted his teeth, ”How many young girls have you harmed for your longevity? Many girls have died over the years. Even if successfully cultivated, can it truly bring supreme honor to their families? It only lets you eat her flesh, allowing selfish people like you to survive!”

The Merfolk were in an uproar, Ayi’s face turned pale with fear, tightly holding her daughter Yunyun, ”Master Bai, are you saying they eat the flesh of the saint girl?”

Jiang Yichun clenched his fists tightly, Bai Ruozhu also had tears in his eyes, ”Yes, they survived by eating the saint girl’s flesh. Your children selected as saints were either tortured to death during the feeding of blood or barely survived ten years of torment only to be eaten by these elder aristocrats!”

”How is this possible, you are lying!” Someone refused to believe it, since they had never seen it with their own eyes.

”Everything she said is true!” A voice sounded from outside. Ling Chen appeared supporting Feng Ran, and the crowd quickly made way.

Feng Ran walked into the Main Hall, tears had already soaked her face, and the wrinkles on her face deepened.

The Merfolk usually died young and were not accustomed to aging. Seeing Feng Ran’s wrinkled face, many people frowned.

”I can prove what she says is true. I only lived past thirty because I was fed the flesh of the saint girl Chushuang by the great elder.” Feng Ran’s voice trembled, ”But Chushuang was my disciple, like my own daughter, and yet I ate her flesh. I cannot accept this; it drives me to madness repeatedly. I considered taking my own life many times, but they used Shuangshuang’s life to threaten me, forcing me to live in agony, but I hate myself, and I hate them even more!”

She glared fiercely at the great elder, as if she was wishing to devour him alive.

”Feng Ran, I did it for your own good, why can’t you understand me?” The great elder’s determined gaze finally cracked, and he cried out in anguish.

He had his beliefs and perseverance, indifferent to the views of others, but Feng Ran’s hatred made him suffer unbearable pain.

”For my good?” Feng Ran sneered, ”The thing I regret most in my life is marrying you!”

The great elder’s body slumped to the ground, spitting out a mouthful of fresh blood.

”Brother, brother, don’t get excited,” the second elder and the others called out in concern.

Bai Ruozhu walked over step by step, ”Now everyone knows your true face, there’s no point in hiding anything. Tell us where the Dragon Ball is hidden. As long as we have the Dragon Ball, it can help the Merfolk lift the Curse of not living past thirty.”

The Merfolk were in uproar once again. Could the Dragon Ball really unlock the Curse? But what is the Dragon Ball?

The great elder’s eyes shot with malicious intent, ”The Bailong Sect sent you! You won’t get the Dragon Ball, I won’t give it to you even if I die!”

He then looked toward the Merfolk and shouted in anger, ”Do you understand? Without the Dragon Ball, you can’t live on the shore like this, your legs will turn into fish tails and you’ll only live in the dark sea bottom, your children will be born looking like monsters!”

”Merfolk are born to be this way, how is it monstrous?” Duannian stepped out, ”Not recognizing me, are you? I’m Duannian, the one you banished over ten years ago!”

The crowd quickly recalled him, and all stared at his legs.

Duannian rolled up his trousers, ”I cut off the tail fin and learned to adapt bit by bit to life on land. Although it’s tough, I believe with effort, I can achieve it. Rather than being cursed not to live past thirty, I’d rather accept my true self!”

”How is this possible...” The great elder showed a look of surprise, but quickly shouted, ”You’re lying, you want to trick us into giving up the Dragon Ball!”

Bai Ruozhu looked at everyone, ”Do you want to carry the guilt and die before thirty, or are you willing to return to the sea and grow old with your loved ones and children?”

People were silent, they had never considered this question.

”Even with human legs, are you truly free? Stuck on this turtle shell, where is the true life on land? You’re just tools controlled and exploited by the elders and aristocrats!” Jiang Yichun spoke, ”I am also a Merfolk, but I would rather accompany my wife and children for a long time, even if it means only living in the water!”

”I agree with Master Bai, I want to see my child grow up, get married, and have children, and I want to see my grandchildren grow up, even if it’s living in the water!” Ayi was the first to speak.

Yunyun hugged her mother, ”Don’t cry, Mother, Yunyun can’t bear to leave you either.”

Following this, many people spoke out, unwilling to quickly part with their loved ones, they would rather return to the sea.
