The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Early the next morning, a notification popped up in the detective team’s work group: ”This morning, all detective team personnel will be divided into 8 groups, conducting a comprehensive investigation of the People’s Hospital, Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and various specialty hospitals and clinics across the city.”

As soon as the news was released, the originally bustling atmosphere in the office instantly froze.

Many people stared at their phone screens, their eyes filled with confusion and puzzlement, as if countless question marks appeared in their minds at the same time.

Soon, several officers gathered together and began discussing in low voices.

”This isn’t right, didn’t we already determine the investigation direction yesterday?”

”Weren’t we supposed to continue investigating personnel within a radius around the crime scene?”

”Why suddenly turn to hospitals?”

A young officer was the first to question, his tone full of doubt.

A seasoned veteran officer nearby replied, frowning: ”Exactly, this doesn’t match what we discussed yesterday at all.”

”Moreover, the previously established work principles seem misleading now.”

”Such sudden changes, won’t they disrupt our existing plans?”

”Regardless, since Captain Qin has already issued the notice, we have to execute it.”

Another officer tried to calm the doubts, ”Perhaps the task force had new findings last night, or the higher-ups proposed a new investigation approach.”

”A new approach?”

The veteran officer spoke more agitatedly, ”The new approach is for us to investigate hospitals?”

”Even if the suspect really has a male disease, what suspicious individuals can be uncovered by investigating hospitals now?”

”Besides, let’s not just talk about suspects; even if one of us has such an ailment, how many would choose to visit a regular hospital for consultation?”

”Most people would discreetly go to places advertised on utility poles or to those inconspicuous clinics.”

He paused, looked around at his colleagues, ”Changing the investigation direction suddenly and deploying large police forces to investigate hospitals, I really don’t understand this move.”

The office instantly fell into silence, everyone pondering what investigative strategy could be hiding behind this unexpected task.

As the crowd whispered and discussed, Mr. Qin strode steadily into the detective team’s office.

He raised his hand and clapped in the air twice, ”Everyone, pause your work for a moment, let me say a few words.”

He swept his sharp gaze across the office, capturing the subtle confusion on everyone’s faces.

No need for words, that unexpected notification in the work group, even though everyone responded with ”received.”

But the air was nearly palpable with doubt.

A young officer sitting nearest spoke first, his tone carrying some confusion: ”Mr. Qin, during the case analysis meeting last night, didn’t we decide to expand the investigation scope around the crime scene?”

”How did it change overnight to start visiting hospitals citywide?”

These words seemed to voice everyone’s sentiments, and the office was immediately filled with murmured agreement.

”Yes, Captain,”

An older detective organizing the files raised his head, frowning slightly, ”After work last night, I lay in bed thinking about how to delineate today’s investigation zones.”

”Exactly.”

Another officer holding a teacup chimed in, ”While shopping with my girlfriend yesterday, I was still sorting out characteristics of suspicious persons in my mind.”

The young officer by the window couldn’t help but interject: ”Even while getting a massage at the foot spa yesterday, I kept pondering where the breakthrough in this case might be.”

Listening to these discussions, Mr. Qin’s mouth slightly curved upwards, a knowing smile flashed in his eyes: ”Oh? Thinking about the case while lying in bed, shopping, and even during a massage?”

His tone was lightly teasing, ”Since when did you all become so dedicated?

I never saw you think so tirelessly about work typically.

Could it be seeing the notification I just posted in the group, realizing that the number of healthcare facilities to investigate is substantial, and the investigation team needs all hands on deck, making you hesitant?”

These words immediately brought embarrassed smiles to those who spoke earlier.

The veteran detective rubbed his nose, candidly saying, ”Captain, now that you mention it, I must admit.”

”There are over a dozen public hospitals in the city alone, countless private ones, plus all those clinics and somewhat dubious medical facilities, if we truly conduct a sweeping investigation, the workload is considerable.”

At the moment, everyone’s gaze focused on Mr. Qin, waiting for his next explanation.

Upon hearing this, Mr. Qin displayed a meaningful smile, slowly setting down the files, his gaze sweeping over everyone present, speaking steadily: ”I anticipated that you’d react this way.”

”But I must tell you, the path we’ve chosen, though seeming roundabout, might very well be the key to unlocking this case.”

”I fully understand how heavy the burden on your shoulders is, but reality is before us—just last night, for this unresolved case, several of us almost stayed awake all night.”

He paused, speaking solemnly: ”This series of cases has been like a thorn lodged in the heart of Quanzhou City Public Security Bureau for too long.”
