The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 636: Chapter 352: Was There a Leak?

minutes later, a police SUV slowly drove into the parking lot of Jiangcheng City People’s Hospital.

At this moment, it was the peak time for morning consultations, and the square in front of the hospital was bustling with people, with the queue at the registration window winding all the way outside the outpatient building.

”It looks like there are quite a few people today, let’s hurry.”

Jiang An was the first to push open the car door.

The three of them passed through the crowded crowd and walked straight towards the administrative building.

”Knock, knock, knock.”

Jiang An lightly tapped the frosted glass door of the finance department office with his fingers.

”Please come in.”

A gentle female voice came from inside.

Pushing the door open, what appeared before their eyes was a female finance officer, about thirty years old.

She was wearing gold-rimmed glasses and checking accounts. Seeing the three of them enter, she immediately put down her pen.

”Hello! We are officers from the Jiangcheng City Public Security Bureau Criminal Investigation Team.”

Jiang An showed his police ID, ”We need your hospital’s assistance in investigating a case.”

”We want to inquire about a patient’s past hospitalization treatment costs.”

Upon hearing this, the woman immediately sat up straight, unconsciously adjusting her glasses frame with her fingers.

”May I ask which patient’s information you need to inquire about?”

As soon as she finished speaking, Wan took out a document from his briefcase and handed it over.

”Li Yong, here’s his ID number and basic information.”

”Please wait a moment.”

Without delay, the woman’s slender fingers quickly typed on the keyboard. Sunlight streamed through the blinds, casting delicate rays on the computer screen.

In less than two minutes, the finance officer suddenly stopped and turned to say, ”This patient’s treatment record dates back quite some time ago, it’s three years...”

She suddenly paused and pushed her glasses to carefully confirm the screen, ”To be exact, he was admitted three years and four months ago.”

This time point made all three officers lean forward simultaneously.

Jiang An keenly noticed the surgery date displayed on the computer screen was indeed the critical time point of their case.

”What was his total treatment cost at the time?”

Jiang An pressed on, his voice inadvertently raised by a few decibels.

The woman scrolled the mouse wheel, and the data on the screen quickly scrolled.

”The system shows...”

She suddenly stopped, her finger pointing at a certain number, ”Craniotomy and subsequent rehabilitation treatment totaling 128,753 yuan.”

”One hundred twenty-eight thousand plus?”

Zhang Yean couldn’t help but repeat, exchanging a surprised look with Jiang An.

”Yes.”

”The craniotomy surcharge in our hospital is indeed quite high, especially for cases like this...”

She pointed at several boldened items on the screen, ”That involved imported materials in special cases.”

Jiang An nodded thoughtfully, his fingers gently tapping the edge of the desk.

”May I inquire about the attending physician of this patient?”

”Just a moment...” The woman switched system interfaces, quickly searching before answering.

”His attending physician is He Biao, a deputy chief physician of neurosurgery.”

”He Biao...”

Jiang An softly repeated the name, carefully jotting it down in his notebook, ”Thank you very much for your cooperation.”

Five minutes later, the three took the elevator to the seventh floor’s neurosurgery ward in the inpatient department.

The smell of disinfectant mingled with the sound of wheel noises in the corridor.

In front of the nurse station, several white coats were discussing cases.

”Excuse me, is Dr. He Biao available?” Jiang An stepped forward to inquire.

A middle-aged man writing medical records in front of a computer in the corner looked up upon hearing the inquiry.

He seemed to be around fifty years old, with graying temples, eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses showing exhaustion yet still alert.

”That’s me, you are...?”

Mr. He stood up, revealing a dark blue surgical gown under his white coat.

Jiang An showed his police ID again.

When the word ”police” came into view, Mr. He’s fingers visibly trembled a bit, the light reflected on his glasses obscuring his pupils’ momentary change.

”Hello, officers, what can I help with?”

His voice carried a subtly detectable tension, his right hand unconsciously adjusting the stethoscope on his chest.

Noticing the counterpart’s unease, Jiang An kindly patted his shoulder, ”No need to be nervous, Mr. He!”

”We just came to learn about a case of a patient you once treated.”

Upon hearing this, He Biao’s expression visibly relaxed.

He took a deep breath, gesturing for the three to take seats in the doctor’s office nearby.

”I see, which patient’s situation do you wish to learn about then?”

Soon after, Wan took out a slip of paper from the folder and handed it over, ”A patient named Li Yong, who had craniotomy surgery here three years ago.”

He Biao took the slip, and upon seeing the name, his eyebrows suddenly twitched.

”Li Yong... Oh! I remember this patient!”

”More than three years ago, you still remember the patient so clearly?”

Jiang An leaned forward slightly, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes.

He Biao took off his glasses, using the corner of his coat to wipe the lenses, seemingly organizing his memories, ”This case was indeed special.”

”At the time, the patient was brought in with blurred consciousness, MRI showed ruptured intracranial aneurysm, hemorrhage exceeding 100 ml.”

He put his glasses back on, his voice turning deep.

Mr. He stood up and turned on the overhead light, continuing, ”At that time, we assessed the surgery success rate to be under 50%, and specifically consulted the hospital head.”

”But the family...” he paused, his gaze becoming profound, ”His son was waiting at the surgery room door, saying they wanted to give it a try no matter what.”

Jiang An quickly noted the key information, the pen scratching softly over the paper.

”As we understand it, this family’s financial situation wasn’t good, facing such high costs...”

”Indeed.”

He Biao sighed, taking out a thermos cup from the drawer.

”At that time, the estimated cost for surgery and ICU was around 130,000.”
