The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 608: Chapter 340: Shame Spurs Courage

In an instant, the atmosphere in Mr. Ma’s office turned oppressive.

You see, although the case in front of them wasn’t a cold one, the family had repeatedly reported the situation to higher authorities, making them very familiar with it.

The city leaders had also issued several directives to ascertain the nature of this case.

As the head of the task force, Mr. Ma had also emphasized many times that there were indeed issues with this case.

At this moment, Mr. Ma, Li Jian, and Zhang Chao all wore very serious expressions, deep wrinkles etched on their foreheads.

After a long while, Li Jian took out a pack of cigarettes, pulled out three sticks, handed one to Mr. Ma and Zhang Chao, and lit one for himself.

Whenever he encountered a difficult case, cigarettes were his best companions.

He took out a lighter, lit it with a ”click,” then turned his head and said, ”Junior Sister, I’m making an exception this time. Normally, I wouldn’t smoke in front of women.”

Zhang Yean smiled, ”Mr. Li, I know you’re under a lot of pressure, it’s okay.”

Then, the three old smokers all started puffing together.

In the swirling smoke, all three of them focused seriously on the case file spread open in front of them.

After taking two puffs, Mr. Ma said in a low voice, ”Yesterday, I reviewed and organized this case again, as the head of this task force.”

”But I did not expect such a conclusion.”

”Frankly, I have a certain degree of confidence in the conclusion of this case.”

”However, the two points Jiang An mentioned earlier, I think, absolutely cannot be ignored.”

”From my personal point of view, there are indeed significant doubts about this case.”

”In our past case handling, as long as a cause of death was drowning in water, the nature of the case was basically determined as accidental.”

”But with this body, unexpected situations indeed emerged.”

”Moreover, the case is highly perplexing.”

”It’s not just that the deceased had been drinking before death.”

”Also, the location of the drowning happened to be on the way home.”

”This precisely adds to the confusion for us.”

Hearing this, both Li Jian and Zhang Chao nodded unconsciously.

They felt a bit guilty internally about the situation Mr. Ma described.

Li Jian stubbed out his cigarette and said, ”It now seems that the possibility of this case being disguised as a drowning death is very high.”

”I believe it’s necessary to pull this case out again, to re-investigate and dig into the perpetrator behind it.”

Instructor Zhang Chao also nodded, ”Better late than never, I think we must restart the investigation again.”

Immediately, Mr. Ma glanced at his watch and said, ”We’re already approaching the end of the workday, let’s gather the task force members and hold a small meeting to clarify the direction of tomorrow’s case investigation.”

Li Jian immediately said, ”Okay, I’ll notify them right away.”

minutes later, in the criminal investigation team’s meeting room.

Everyone looked at each other; when Mr. Li called the meeting, he didn’t specify the reason for it.

At this moment, everyone was hoping to go home early to spend time with their wives and children.

After all, days when the criminal investigation team could get off work regularly were few and far between.

Today was supposed to be a rare quiet day.

As Mr. Ma and Mr. Li walked in, everyone naturally fell silent.

However, their expressions were very serious.

Everyone suddenly had a bad premonition, ”Could there be another case?”

”Could it be? Nobody called the police today...”

”The last case has just been solved, what’s the new issue?”

”Mr. Li’s expression shouldn’t be like this...”

...

In an instant, everyone, having been through this before, began to speculate in their hearts.

After Mr. Ma and Mr. Li sat down, Mr. Ma cleared his throat and said, ”Comrades, the reason for gathering you here for an impromptu meeting is because there’s something very important and unexpected for me.”

As he spoke, he turned to look at the case file he was holding, then lifted it and said, ”This case file is a traffic accident case from three years ago, many of you may remember it.”

At this moment, Mr. Ma raised the case file in his hand, and everyone craned their necks to see the conspicuous words ”Accidental Drowning” on the file cover.

Some of the more experienced officers began to nod, indicating their recollection.

After a slight pause, Mr. Ma continued, ”Why do we have to revisit this case today?”

”The main reason is that the classification of this case back then was problematic.”

”Problematic?”

”What problems?”

”Impossible, right?”

...

Some officers began whispering to each other.

Many had participated in numerous reviews of this case.

Hearing the chattering in the conference room, Mr. Ma gently tapped the table and said, ”Everyone, quiet down, let Mr. Ma finish.”

Mr. Ma said in a low voice, ”Brothers, our classification of this case back then might have been wrong.”

In an instant, the entire room was abuzz.

”Wrong?”

”How is that possible?”

...

Many people started discussing again.

Mr. Ma signaled with his hand again to quiet everyone down, ”The basic facts of the case are very straightforward.”

”The deceased attended a social event, drank, rode a motorcycle home, passed by a pond on the way, and was eventually found dead in the pond.”

”But the family was very unsatisfied with the ’accidental death’ conclusion, and to this day, the body hasn’t been cremated.”

”As the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau in charge of criminal investigation, I feel quite guilty internally.”
