The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 617: Chapter 344: The Close Bond Between Police and Civilians

After hanging up the phone, Jiang An asked in a deep voice, ”Are you hungry, senior sister?”

Zhang Yean rubbed her temples, a helpless smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

”You won’t believe it, but I usually skip dinner to keep my figure, it’s really not easy.”

”But after being busy until now, I really am a bit hungry.”

”That’s perfect!”

Jiang An put the report into a folder, ”Senior sister, let’s go, I’ll treat you to something good.”

”You’re treating me?”

Zhang Yean raised an eyebrow, ”From a senior sister’s perspective, I’d definitely refuse. But...”

She suddenly grinned mischievously, ”You’re now the deputy captain of the criminal investigation team. From the perspective of a leader caring for a subordinate, you must treat this meal!”

Jiang An was amused by her logic: ”Alright, alright, I’ll treat.”

”Senior Wan and the other guys are still at the scene, they haven’t even had time to eat.”

”Why don’t we pack some food and bring it over to them?”

”Sure!”

Zhang Yean’s eyes lit up, she clapped her hands and said, ”Why don’t we bring the food to the scene? We can have a field cookout in the open field!”

”That’s a brilliant idea!”

Jiang An said excitedly, ”We can get some barbecue and staples to eat on the vacant land next to the crime scene.”

”Though the setting may be a bit shabby, it will definitely be memorable.”

The two immediately acted on their plan, quickly packing up their things and driving to the barbecue joint opposite the public security bureau.

Under the night sky, the neon lights of the barbecue restaurant were particularly striking.

After parking the car, Jiang An looked around: ”Since I started working at the municipal bureau, I’ve realized that this place’s clientele is basically filled with our bureau’s people.”

”I’ve noticed that phenomenon long ago,”

Zhang Yean locked the car door, ”I’ve even specifically observed.”

”The ingredients this shop prepares every day are just enough for our bureau’s consumption.”

”This area is all office buildings, the residential areas are far, so ordinary citizens seldom come here for late-night snacks.”

”And besides,” Jiang An picked up the conversation as they walked side by side toward the barbecue joint.

”No one from the streets would dare to eat barbecue in front of the police station, would they?”

”What if they just happen to run into officers investigating a case, wouldn’t that be asking for trouble?”

”Haha, exactly!”

With the conversation, they’d already reached the store entrance.

The chubby owner rushed over enthusiastically as soon as he saw the police uniforms: ”Officers, what would you like to eat tonight?”

Zhang Yean carefully inspected the inventory at the freezer: ”Owner, which ingredients are the freshest?”

”We have to work overtime and can’t afford to have upset stomachs.”

”Rest assured!”

The owner patted his chest in reassurance, ”You protect this city on the front lines, how could we small business owners cheat our own people?”

”Moreover, every time you come, I give you a 20% discount!”

Jiang An professionally examined the ingredients, picking up a few skewers to observe their color under the light, and also smelled them: ”From a forensic point of view, these meats are well-preserved with no signs of spoilage, especially these kidney slices and pig liver, they’re vibrant in color.”

”Then we’ll listen to the expert!”

Zhang Yean chuckled as she picked up a basket, ”Let’s select more, Senior Wan and the others must be starving.”

The two began meticulously picking: fresh green grilled leeks, golden grilled tofu, tender grilled squid, thick grilled kidney slices, smooth grilled pig liver...

In no time, they filled four large baskets to the brim.

The owner looked at the mountain of ingredients and couldn’t help but advise, ”Officers, while I do want to sell more, can you really eat all this?”

”You are an honest person, owner!”

Jiang An explained, ”These aren’t just for the two of us, we have four colleagues waiting at the scene.”

”Right,”

Zhang Yean added, ”Once it’s grilled, help us pack it up. We also need a few bags of dried chili peppers. For drinks, a case of mineral water and a case of Red Bull.”

”Got it!” The owner swiftly started grilling, the charcoal fire tinting his round face red.

The ingredients on the grill soon sizzled, with their aroma spreading into the night air.

Meanwhile, Zhang Yean and Jiang An were waiting perched on small stools outside the store.

The night breeze gently blew, while the distant lights of the public security bureau remained bright.

This seemingly ordinary night appeared extra special due to the upcoming unique ”field cookout” near the crime scene.

After 40 minutes of careful grilling, all the ingredients were finally ready.

Jiang An and Zhang Yean carefully placed the delicious-smelling barbecue into insulated bags, neatly storing them in the police car’s trunk.

As the engine roared, the police car sped away into the night, heading toward the crime scene in the suburbs.

After about 30 minutes of driving, the sound of pumping machines could already be clearly heard from the fields ahead.

Looking through the car window, four mobile lights could be seen flickering near a pond, like fireflies in the darkness.

The police car hadn’t fully stopped when Wan and the other three officers eagerly gathered around.

”Open the door!” Wan joked while exaggeratedly sniffing the air, ”Oh my, this smell is too tempting!”

”Captain definitely knows how to care for us night shift guys.”

He turned to his colleagues, ”At this rate, we’ll be cleansed by the aroma alone.”

In jest, the four had already effortlessly lifted the two large insulated bags from the car.

Zhang Yean teased playfully, ”Senior, you can see how much Mr. Jiang thinks of you. He even specially prepared four skewers of kidney slices, and two skewers of kidneys and pig liver for you!”

He deliberately lowered his voice, ”Those are my favorites, giving them all to you today.”

The group quickly spread out the food and discovered that thoughtful Zhang Yean had even brought a folding picnic mat.

At this moment, on the open field beside the crime scene, six officers sat in a circle, each with a can of Red Bull in hand.
