Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1592: Chapter 1592: What a Coincidence

”Sorry, we’re late!” An Hao said with a smile, ”It’s all Qin Jian’s fault. He didn’t tell me earlier so that I could have prepared the food first thing in the morning!”

”Come on in,” Gu Shuangshuang stepped aside and let the two of them in.

As soon as An Hao entered, she saw a boy sitting on the living room couch. He couldn’t be more than eighteen or nineteen, his face full of youthful innocence and simplicity.

”Is this... a relative of yours?” An Hao turned her head to ask Gu Shuangshuang.

As soon as she finished speaking, the boy sprang up excitedly and came charging over. He stopped in front of Qin Jian, snapped to attention, and saluted crisply, ”New recruit Lin Sheng from the third squad of the second platoon reporting for duty!”

Qin Jian’s mouth curved into a slight smile and he returned the salute with a casual lift of his hand. Then he gently patted the boy on the shoulder, ”Well done! I waited a month without any news from you, and here you are, sneaking off to join the army.”

Lin Sheng excitedly rubbed his hands together and said, ”Commander, actually, it was Zhao Dong, Captain Zhao, who found me! He asked me if I still wanted to join the army!”

”What’s the matter? Got cold feet after a month?” Qin Jian asked.

”No, no!” Lin Sheng replied grinning, ”Actually, I was about to come to find you, but then a small trouble happened. That’s why I was delayed.”

”Is it resolved now?” Qin Jian asked.

”Um. Sort of... resolved, I guess?” Lin Sheng said.

”I’m guessing it was your future father-in-law causing trouble for you again?” Qin Jian said.

”Yes. Commander, you’re really smart, guessed right in one.”

”When we’re alone with no one around, just call me Brother Qin, ok? When there are people around, then you can call me Regimental Commander,” Qin Jian corrected him briefly, then asked, ”Tell me about your father-in-law? Always felt there was something off about him.”

”That... let’s not talk about him, okay?” Lin Sheng, with an evasive and flickering gaze, asked when his eyes landed on An Hao, who sat beside Qin Jian, ”Is this sister-in-law?”

Since Lin Sheng didn’t want to talk, Qin Jian didn’t press.

Every family has its own hard-to-read scripture; Lin Sheng had his reasons for not wanting to discuss it.

”Yes. You are...?” An Hao was also curious.

”My name is Lin Sheng. Sister-in-law, it was my girlfriend Mianmian who saved Brother Qin during the earthquake! Last time, I even specifically came to deliver a letter to you, but it got lost halfway,” Lin Sheng said, scratching his short stubble, looking embarrassed.

”Are you Qin Jian’s lifesaver? I’m really grateful to you for that!” An Hao was very surprised; she hadn’t expected the person that Qin Jian wanted her to meet would be his lifesaver.

”It’s Mianmian, not me!” Lin Sheng said, feeling shy, ”I just took care of the Regimental Commander and the Battalion Commander for a few days.”

”Well, I still have to thank you. Did your girlfriend Mianmian come? Why didn’t you bring her along?”

”Mianmian did come. But she’s working and couldn’t make it,” Lin Sheng said.

”What does she do?” An Hao asked casually.

”She? She works as a waitress at the Nanguofeng Restaurant. She said they pay well there and provide food and accommodation, so she went,” Lin Sheng answered truthfully.

”Nanguofeng... what a coincidence,” An Hao murmured to herself.

”What did you say?” Lin Sheng asked eagerly, not catching her murmurs.

”Oh, nothing...”

Before An Hao could finish her sentence, a loud bang came from the kitchen, followed immediately by Tian Niu pushing the door open, and a wave of thick smoke along with the smell of burning wafted into the living room.
