Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1085: Chapter 1085: No Different from Living Like a Widow

”I remember it all! But can it be used as Fangfang’s excuse for lack of ambition?” Hen Zhiyuan dropped the chess piece he was holding, speaking irritably.

”How do you know it’s about this?” Ma Mei asked.

”What else has he ever fretted about but this very issue?”

”That’s true! You have to help with this, the official results from your institute will be released in a week! You must talk to our dean before then.”

”Alright, I know.” Hen Zhiyuan wasn’t in the mood for chess anymore, and simply tidied up the pieces and headed inside the house.

Ma Mei finished her bath, lifted the blanket, and got into bed.

The two hadn’t been intimate for a while, and Ma Mei was finding it hard to restrain herself.

She gently patted Hen Zhiyuan: ”It’s been several days since you’ve been with me! How about tonight we...”

”Don’t even think about it! Go to sleep! I’m in a bad mood today.” Hen Zhiyuan turned down Ma Mei’s request.

”You’ve been irritable these past few days,” Ma Mei said, flipping over angrily, ”It’s unavoidable for a woman without a husband to live like a widow, but I married you and every day I’m goddamn sleeping alone! How is that any different from being a living widow?”

Hen Zhiyuan saw his wife getting angry and quickly rolled over to coax her: ”I’ve really been so irritable these days. It’s almost time for me to nominate the platoon chief, but now a staff officer has parachuted in out of nowhere! And he’s a legendary figure from the Northern Military Region. Do I still stand a chance for the platoon chief position?”

”What? Someone’s parachuted in? Oh my god, what kind of joke is this? It’s bad enough that things aren’t going well for me and Fangfang. Now you too?” Ma Mei thought for a moment and said, ”Why don’t you find a way to get rid of him?”

”Where do you think we are? Can we just get rid of anyone who displeases us? Is this place run by my family? Or because the Commander is my father?” Hen Zhiyuan raised his voice a notch.

”Are you stupid?” Ma Mei said to her husband, ”The nomination for platoon chief definitely requires the bigwigs from the military region! Aren’t you on good terms with Chief Guan? If not now, then when will you ask for his help?”

”Let me ask you a question!”

”Go ahead.”

”Which is higher, the rank of an army corps commander or a military region commander?”

”Of course, the commander’s position is higher!” Isn’t that obvious?

”The staff officer who parachuted in is the son of the Commander.” This was the real reason for Hen Zhiyuan’s anxiety.

He hadn’t known before.

But now that he did, he felt that the position of platoon chief was hopeless for him.

He had held the position of deputy chief for many years.

If he couldn’t get a promotion soon, he was afraid he might be transferred out of the military.

Just thinking about it made him extremely anxious.

After all these years in the military, to be demobilized and return to civilian life, he definitely couldn’t handle such a drastic change in his mental state.

”Ah? Could it be such a coincidence?” Ma Mei was surprised.

”That’s how coincidental it is. What can you do about it?”

”Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” Ma Mei clenched her teeth and said, ”Success depends on the effort, no matter whose son he is, we’ll keep pushing in the direction we had planned, and whether we can topple him or not, we’ll first give it a shot.”

”Heh!” Hen Zhiyuan was amused by his wife’s blunt words, and pounced to pin her beneath him. ”Alright then, I guess I’ll start by toppling you tonight.”

Hen Zhiyuan went to the affiliated hospital early the next morning.

He had some connections with the dean here, which is why he was able to get Ruan Fangfang, an ordinary medical college graduate, into this hospital.

After the two met, the dean laid his cards on the table.
