Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1070: Chapter 1070: Future Competitors

If it were not for his father’s situation, he would probably still be in the Northwestern Military Region today.

”Yes! Jian Ying is doing quite well now. I wonder how Tian Niu is doing.” The commander had an inexplicable fondness for that honest and simple soldier.

”He got promoted to battalion commander. Still the same old style.” Qin Jian answered very briefly.

”That’s good,” the commander said, as he glanced at the time on his watch. ”Let’s go! Let’s have a group meeting and let everyone meet and recognize you, our new staff officer!”

Qin Jian nodded and followed the commander out of the office.

The large meeting room on the second floor of the regiment headquarters.

All the officers of battalion rank and above were already present.

The commander stood on the stage and introduced Qin Jian to everyone. ”As you may have heard before, our regiment is welcoming a new chief of staff. Some of you must have heard of his great reputation; he was once a legend in our Northern Military Region! Because he left due to the disbandment, he has finally come back! Let’s give a warm round of applause to welcome our chief of staff!”

The applause from below was thunderous and took a long time to subside.

Qin Jian stepped forward, saluted, and introduced himself simply: ”My name is Qin Jian! In the days to come, I will advance and retreat together with everyone.”

Just a simple sentence like that!

The people below waited for a long time for him to say something else, but when he did not, they erupted into another round of vigorous applause.

From below, Hen Zhiyuan sat quietly, his gaze distant and fixed on Qin Jian’s face.

So this was the famous Qin Jian.

He was also his future competitor.

”Deputy commander, our new chief of staff really has a character,” said a battalion commander sitting next to Hen Zhiyuan, leaning over to speak.

”How could a legendary figure from the Northern Military Region be ordinary?” Hen Zhiyuan said with a trace of acidity in his tone.

”Indeed! But he is your future competitor, Deputy Commander!”

Hen Zhiyuan glanced at him. ”You talk a bit too much.”

After the brief meeting, Qin Jian followed the commander back to the office.

”Commander!” Hen Zhiyuan hurried a few steps, catching up from behind, and greeted Qin Jian with a smile and a handshake, ”Welcome, Chief of Staff Qin! From now on, we are colleagues!”

Qin Jian’s mouth curled into a faint smile as he shook his hand, ”Deputy Commander, I look forward to your guidance in the future!”

”Certainly! Certainly!” Hen Zhiyuan responded.

”Old Hen! From now on, when you see me in the regiment headquarters, still call me the commander! I need to act as the commander for a while longer until the new commander is appointed,” Zhang Jianguo said.

”How can that be? You’re acting as the commander, but you’re truly a brigade commander,” Hen Zhiyuan insisted on his previous address, ”I’ll still call you ’brigade commander’!”

Zhang Jianguo chuckled twice, ”The old brigade commander hasn’t left yet, and because of special circumstances, the appointment letter still has to wait. Let’s stick with ’commander’ for now.”

After greeting him, Hen Zhiyuan excused himself, citing other matters, and left first.

Zhang Jianguo turned his head to ask Qin Jian, ”What do you think of my deputy commander?”

”Smart! Knows how to read the room! Very good at observing and listening,” Qin Jian said indifferently.

Zhang Jianguo laughed heartily and then leaned in to whisper, ”Tell me your real thoughts.”

Qin Jian raised an eyebrow at him, ”How do you know what I’m thinking?”

”Nonsense! I’ve known you for over a decade; how could I not know you?”

Qin Jian nodded and expressed his objective evaluation of him, ”Sycophantic, good at flattering, and I don’t like him.”
