I Became a Medical Genius in the 80s

Chapter 319: Chapter 318: The Old Chief of Staff Sets the Challenge

At this evening party, Li Ying had three goals: to step on Beisitian and crush her into the mud! This was the first. The second was to show Luo Xudong who truly was the best!

The last, which has become the most important motive of this party recently, is to find a way into the eyes of the old commander!

Using the interaction session to push Beisitian into the mud was her initial plan, but now she feels like she’s about to shoot herself in the foot.

On the high platform, Sun Guicai saw that Beisitian actually won, squinting his eyes slightly, he shook his head and sighed, ”This family member indeed has some talent, but unfortunately...”

Wu Yuekai turned his head to look at him, ”Unfortunately what?”

”Unfortunately, her character has some issues; she’s too arrogant and doesn’t know humility, and she has no respect for us elders, such a waste of talent.” Sun Guicai spoke with a face full of regret.

Beisitian’s victory overshadowed Li Ying’s original brilliance, so Sun Guicai had to pave the way for Li Ying by belittling Beisitian. Furthermore, he really looked down on Beisitian, this girl no matter how talented, had character issues if she didn’t know how to be humble and respect the elders.

Song Fanggang gave Sun Guicai a peculiar glance. He was not very familiar with Beisitian but was quite familiar with her husband. Luo Xudong’s identity was very special; he was temporarily assigned to his division, originally belonging to the General Staff Department.

Although not explicitly stated, Song Fanggang, being a commander, naturally knew more. The need for the General Staff Department to assign someone elsewhere only involved that special department.

Luo Xudong had just earned a first-class merit, it’s not hard to guess that he must have just returned after completing a mission.

Moreover, Song Fanggang also knew that Luo Xudong once served as a bodyguard for the old commander Wu Yuekai and was recommended by the old commander to be assessed for the special forces, though how he later went to the General Staff Department was unknown to him.

But it was certain that the old commander really liked this soldier, Luo Xudong!

As for whether he knew his wife, Song Fanggang heard some rumors some time ago, even if they were rumors, they had some basis in fact.

The reason why the old commander could arrive here in good health for the evening party owed something to Luo Xudong’s wife.

So...

Song Fanggang decided to keep silent, thinking it best not to say anything.

Li Xuejun, standing not far away, heard Sun Guicai’s words and suddenly realized, oh, the old commander was planning to trip you up, even if he wasn’t initially, he is now!

Song Fanggang and Li Xuejun both glanced at Wu Yuekai, who cheerfully showed no signs of concern, and silently looked away.

Li Ying was relieved that she didn’t lose her composure earlier and still had a chance to salvage the situation.

Li Ying took a deep breath, burying the blow she just received deep in her heart, a glint of determination showing in her eyes. The higher you climb now, the harder you will fall later!

Who gets the last laugh isn’t certain yet!

A new round of games began. This time the art troupe started asking questions, and sure enough, the referee didn’t wait for the three in the audience to react before ringing the bell.

Well, given the first time, you can’t really say he did it on purpose; everyone gets one chance.

The first three people were embarrassed to propose any particularly complex talent contests to the audience, ending things simply. When it was Li Ying’s turn, everyone immediately felt a sense of anticipation.

The contest just now was very exciting, how would Li Ying retaliate this time?

Li Ying’s face showed no signs of the previous situation, she charmingly smiled at Beisitian, ”Sister-in-law won earlier; this time I must give it my all. I heard that sister-in-law practices traditional Chinese medicine, and all TCM practitioners write with a brush. How about a calligraphy contest between Xiao Ying and you?”

A calligraphy contest?

Beisitian was taken aback; she didn’t expect Li Ying to propose a calligraphy contest. She glanced at Li Ying suspiciously, wondering if she was inherently talented or had a profound knowledge of calligraphy to propose such a contest in public.

Li Ying naturally saw the expression on Beisitian’s face and assumed she was hesitating, smiling as she said, ”Sister-in-law, there’s no need to be modest. I know you can write with a brush.”

In truth, she didn’t know this at all, but she just didn’t want Beisitian to avoid the contest by claiming ignorance or simply conceding defeat, which would leave her with no way to proceed.

Beisitian frowned slightly. Her skill in calligraphy shouldn’t be known here, so how did Li Ying know?

”Okay.” Beisitian agreed.

The talent show for the two was set to be a calligraphy contest.

On the high platform, Sun Guicai quickly said with a cheerful smile, ”Nannan has been practicing calligraphy since she was ten, reportedly for seven or eight years now. I don’t understand much about calligraphy, so commander, could you please check how well this child writes?”

Li Xuejun secretly rolled his eyes, thinking that not just anyone could be guided by the old commander, merely a small troupe soldier after all!

At this moment, an old cadre behind him also became interested, like Wu Yuekai, enjoying writing and attending cultural forums, exchange forums, and having attended with Wu Yuekai, maintaining a good relationship.

”We should organize more programs like this. While music and singing are nice, they serve little purpose, unlike writing, which can cultivate one’s mind. Don’t you agree, Brother Wu?” Zhao Zhongqi said.

Wu Yuekai nodded with a cheerful smile, ”For girls, having talent is one thing, but character is another. True excellence means having both, otherwise, it’s just a pretty empty shell.”

Sun Guicai caught the implication behind his words, feeling delighted, surely he was talking about Nannan!

”The commander is right!” Sun Guicai nodded repeatedly, the army wife being just a pretty empty shell.

Looking at the stage, Wu Yuekai showed a serene smile, speaking to Song Fanggang, ”Commander Song, since we’re all here today, let this old man set the task for these two children.”

Song Fanggang nodded. His qualifications were far inferior to Wu Yuekai’s. Earlier, the old commander used to call him Little Song. After he rose to become a division commander, the title changed, sounding more respectable but he found Little Song more endearing.

”Go call Yuan Guiling over and bring a microphone,” Song Fanggang said.

Soon enough, Yuan Guiling hurried over. The order in the audience was neat, aside from family members and guests occasionally whispering, nobody else made a sound, such is military discipline.

Li Ying knew it was a pause called from the high platform and couldn’t help but cast expectant eyes toward its direction.

Yuan Guiling soon returned, whispered a few words to the host, who kept nodding, then the host smiled and said to the audience, ”Our army is fortunate to have Mr. Wu Yuekai, the old commander, as the quizmaster for this interactive competition, and several old cadres as the judges. Let’s give a round of applause to thank the old commander!”

A round of applause immediately erupted from the audience.
