Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Twists and Turns

Yu Yue nodded subtly, ”After absorbing that Pan-energy Crystal yesterday, I took a nap, and this morning I became an Evolver. My core ability is ’Sound Wave Affinity,’ which allows me to hear many strange sounds.”

”An operator, no less.” Su Huan was genuinely surprised.

He originally thought the first to evolve would be Liang Kuan or Yu Jing, but unexpectedly, timid Aunt Yu had taken the lead in evolution.

Su Huan maneuvered around the table and chairs, walking over to Yu Yue’s side, and took a look at her ears.

After becoming an Evolver, there would be more or less some changes to the body.

Like the metallic color in Qi Xiaobai’s eyes, or the gathering light in Wan Xing’s eyes.

Su Huan’s changes were even more obvious, either red light or lightning.

Yu Yue’s ears had become longer, noticeably lifted, with an intricately defined cartilage outline, not as exaggerated as elf ears, but still giving a very refined impression.

Thanks to this evolution, all the fine wrinkles at the corners of her eyes disappeared, and her skin became a shade fairer.

Although these were minor adjustments accompanying evolution, combined, they made her appear at least ten years younger.

Seemingly sensing Su Huan’s gaze, Yu Yue self-consciously adjusted her hair, her earlobes blushing slightly.

”Normal human hearing ranges from 20-20,000Hz, so you can hear many sounds we can’t. But what these sounds mean, you’ll have to figure out on your own.”

”After all, we can’t hear them.” Su Huan explained while squinting his eyes, observing Yu Yue up and down.

Being able to hear special sound waves was just her ancillary ability; her main ability seemed to be sound wave manipulation.

Otherwise, this type wouldn’t be called ’operator.’

”Is there anything else?”

”I seem to be able to gather some of the sounds I hear, and I can also emit some high-pitched and low-frequency sounds myself.”

Su Huan picked up a piece of glass from the table, then looked at Aunt Yu’s slightly whiter neck, expressing some surprise.

”Did you do this?”

In a past life, he had come across someone who could hear various sound waves, but hearing and using them were different.

”Hmm...”

The fine hairs on Yu Yue’s ears stood up, and her slender, arched eyebrows furrowed as her fingers twisted like a child’s.

Facing Su Huan’s gaze, she always felt very nervous.

She glanced furtively at her daughter sitting beside them, then her emotions calmed somewhat.

Su Huan looked intrigued, ”Seems to have quite an offensive capability, to what extent?”

”Currently, the attack power is weak, at most causing a momentary ringing in the ears.”

”Very good.”

Su Huan said with satisfaction.

A complete team might not necessarily be made up of many powerful individuals, but rather a group of people with various skills working together.

Fire suppression, area control, long-range support, sensory tracking...

Forming a reasonable squad through different specialties.

Except when Su Huan initially recruited people, he prioritized an armored train, with control being secondary.

Matching evolutionary abilities was like opening a blind box; he didn’t expect Yu Yue and the others to have particularly suitable abilities.

Unexpectedly, drawing one that could manipulate sound waves was already considered very fortunate.

”Really?”

Yu Yue didn’t expect to hear ”very good” from the demanding Su Huan, so she lifted her smooth chin and asked courageously, ”Then what can I do?”

Su Huan looked at Yu Yue’s soft lips and fell into thought.

High frequency, vibration, perhaps...

”Could be a sniper?”

”Ah, me?”

Yu Yue’s eyebrows unknitted, and she placed her hands joyfully behind her.

Suddenly, she remembered her daughter and others were present, so she quietly restrained her joyous movements.

Seeing her mother being praised and happy like a little girl, Yu Jing sighed internally and asked, ”Is it because sound wave abilities are more suited for long-range deployment?”

Su Huan turned and replied seriously, ”Yes, with sound wave control, she can easily gather battlefield information, like terrain and enemy positions, and with a sniper rifle, she’d be a key combat force.”

Yu Jing thought about her mom’s personality; if she had to go into battle with a knife, she’d likely hide behind her in fear.

Being a remote sniper sounded good.

Important yet safe.

”Huh?”

Yu Yue suddenly exclaimed softly.

The others looked at her curiously.

”Mom, what’s wrong?”

Yu Jing stepped beside her mother and held her hand.

Yu Yue tilted her head slightly and said uncertainly, ”I heard two explosions, sounding much like this morning’s.”

Su Huan and Yu Jing exchanged glances, raising an eyebrow as they asked, ”Which direction?”

Yu Yue extended her finger, pointing outside towards the left carriage.

Su Huan’s gaze instantly grew cold.

That was the direction of the water plant, which Yu Yue didn’t know previously.

Su Huan squinted his eyes, ”Xiaoba, head to the cockpit, have Liang Kuan speed up, and pay attention to road conditions. Wan Xing, go to the storage carriage. Yu Jing, stay here and let me know if your mom hears anything else.”

After speaking, Su Huan headed towards the second observation carriage.

Climbing the stairs to the second level, he looked out the window.

As it was now morning, the mist outside had cleared quite a bit. Though still overcast, the distant view was visible.

Both sides of the railway were mostly low-rise buildings under six stories, surrounded by metal fences.

There weren’t many cars on the road, seemingly cleared by someone.

Many Corpse Pupas were pierced through, likely Starry Property’s doing.

Glass was fogged with condensation, somewhat blurry, so Su Huan simply walked through the rear car door to the roof of carriage 3.

The humid, oppressive air surged, quickly soaking his grey t-shirt, sticking it damply to his body.

Standing here, he had a clear view of the water tower beneath the overcast sky in the distance.

As the train progressed, by 10:22, it finally halted, with the water tower shifting from the left of Su Huan’s view to directly in front.

Approximately a kilometer away.

It’s been 42 minutes since Gao Zhe and his four workers, along with two bomb-carrying aides, set off.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to send his own people.

Liang Kuan was the driver and couldn’t easily disembark; Qi Xiaobai was a strategic talent with impaired mobility and also couldn’t disembark.

No need to mention the likes of Yu Jing and Wan Xing.

Sending them would be akin to tossing buns to dogs.

Even with no risk, complications would arise.

When doomsday strips away the restraints of civilization, women also become an important resource.

Thus, even when Gao Zhe repeatedly broke the rules, Su Huan refrained from executing him.

Because he needed such a powerful yet distanced henchman.

Suddenly, Su Huan’s pupils reflected a figure stumbling back to the train.

And footsteps came from behind, with Liang Kuan hauling Juan up.

Su Huan pulled Juan over by the shoulder, pointing to the distant figure with a faint smile, asking, ”What kind of news do you think he brings back?”

Juan glanced at the worker uniform on the figure, his heart sinking as he swallowed hard.

”Brother Su, maybe there’s been some misunderstanding...”

The figure, having seen Su Huan on the train, ran faster, completely indifferent to the mud splatters on his legs.

Reaching below the train, he gasped heavily and shouted, ”Boss Su, they’ve backed out!”
