The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1743: Chapter 1743: Honest and Warmhearted Folk

Shu Yu laughed, ”You asked your brother, and he didn’t tell you. Why do you think I would tell you?”

Meng Han was taken aback and let out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping, ”You’re right.”

”Alright, anyway, he’s safe for now. Just rest assured that your father will come back once this is all over. I’m leaving.”

Meng Han stopped, no longer following, just watching Shu Yu’s figure as he sighed quietly, pouting, ”Still treating me like a child.”

Shu Yu had already left the Meng family escort agency with Ying Xi, and the sky was just starting to lighten, but the street was chillingly quiet.

The couple who usually sold wontons a short distance away were absent, and there wasn’t even a shadow of the patrolling soldiers. At this moment, Chenggu County felt like a deserted city, lingering with desolation.

However, the further Shu Yu walked, the more she noticed faint movements coming from the houses along the street.

Many people were peeking out of their windows, having heard the commotion last night, but no one dared to venture outside.

Some hadn’t slept all night, fearing that the mountain bandits would break in again and take their lives while they were sleeping.

Now that daylight had come, everyone slightly relaxed. But compared to the previous days when they had to go out for their livelihoods, not a single person dared to come out today.

Shu Yu and Ying Xi walking down the street stood out conspicuously, and soon some curious eyes began to measure them.

After a while, someone couldn’t hold back any longer, opened a window, cautiously looked around, and then raised a hand to greet Shu Yu, softly calling, ”Miss, miss?”

Shu Yu looked in the direction of the voice, ”Are you calling me?”

Behind the window was a middle-aged woman. Seeing Shu Yu’s attention, she nodded immediately and waved at her.

Shu Yu and Ying Xi walked over, ”Auntie, what’s the matter?”

The woman looked around again before quietly asking, ”Girl, you two are really bold. Didn’t you hear the commotion last night? The shouts of fighting, the mountain bandits came again, maybe they haven’t even left yet. You’re out walking so early, aren’t you afraid for your lives?”

With every couple of sentences, she glanced around, as if afraid of being noticed.

”Where are you girls headed? If it’s not urgent, don’t go for now. Come hide at my place, wait until the patrolling soldiers are here, and then go out with them, it’s safer.”

While she was talking, someone behind her tugged on her, seemingly disapproving.

The middle-aged woman impatiently bumped into the person behind her and continued speaking to Shu Yu, ”Especially you pretty young girls, it’s even more dangerous outside. Be careful those mountain bandits might take you back as a forced wife.”

Shu Yu felt the woman’s goodwill. Look at these simple and warm-hearted villagers, even while themselves still uneasy, they have the courage to reach out a helping hand. Such innocent people have become pawns to be slaughtered at will by the Second Prince and the Third Prince, it’s truly despicable.

Seeing the woman about to open the side door, Shu Yu quickly said, ”It’s alright now, Auntie, rest assured, the bandits in the city have been caught. There was quite a commotion last night, but it was to root out the pests in Chenggu County, and now the streets are safe. If you don’t believe me, you can check at the Office; there should be news posted on the notice board.”

The woman was stunned, ”You, what did you say? All that shouting and fighting last night, was to catch mountain bandits?”

”Yes.”

”They’ve, they’ve all been caught, those hiding in the city have been caught?”
