The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1664: Chapter 1664: We Go, You Go Home

Meng Qi withdrew his hand in surprise; his brother really called it right.

Meng Yunzheng hesitated over a few of the holes for a moment but didn’t press them, quickly pulling his hand back.

Meng Qi was puzzled, ”Brother, let’s hurry and go in.”

”Yu and I need to go. You go home.”

Meng Qi widened his eyes in disbelief, ”Why, why?”

Meng Yunzheng pointed to Yuan Gui, whose face was ashen and barely holding on with his last bit of willpower, ”Although his injuries have been given emergency treatment, they’re too severe for him to follow us and take risks. If there’s any further delay, it could be life-threatening. You take him out to find a doctor and get him treated.”

”But...” Meng Qi blinked and glanced at Yuan Gui. The latter was indeed in a daze, unable to stand, only able to sit by leaning against a corner.

In this condition, they certainly couldn’t just leave him behind.

Meng Qi wanted to suggest letting Shu Yu take him out since it’s even more dangerous inside the secret chamber, and he was going to rescue his own father, so he should go personally.

But then he thought of Yuan Gui’s age and realized it wouldn’t be appropriate for his future sister-in-law to assist a grown man out.

Moreover, neither Yuan Gui nor his future sister-in-law was familiar with the county town, and it would be troublesome if they ran into patrolling officers.

Clenching his teeth, Meng Qi finally nodded, ”Alright, I’ll take Yuan Gui out. You, you be careful.”

However, Yuan Gui caught his breath and said to Meng Yunzheng, ”Are you planning to go in there alone? Since we know the position of the secret chamber and how to get in, we should report directly and let the authorities handle it. There are a lot of bandits; it’s too dangerous for just the two of you to go in.”

Report to the authorities?

The three of them let out a laugh. Meng Yunzheng said to Yuan Gui, ”On our way here, there was something off about the atmosphere in this county town. I suspect there’s a traitor within the authorities, and they hold a decent position. Reporting to them might not only fail to rescue anyone but also get us implicated.”

He didn’t mention that both the county magistrate and magistrate had issues; some things were not suitable for him to know too much about.

Yuan Gui was stunned, a traitor?

He suddenly seemed to realize something, his face showing a look of enlightenment.

”No wonder, no wonder that day I saw the soldiers were chasing in this direction as well, yet when I hid in the courtyard, they never came in to search. I hadn’t thought much of it before, assuming they had gone somewhere else. But thinking back now, they knew there was something off about the courtyard and deliberately didn’t come in.”

Even within the authorities, there were traitors. Clearly, the mountain bandits were operating right under their noses, yet they pretended not to see.

No wonder, after so many days, the mountain bandits in the city hadn’t been caught, with no progress at all.

If the authorities were colluding with the mountain bandits, could the common people still survive?

Yuan Gui clenched his fingers tightly, ”What do we do then? If the authorities won’t act, are we just supposed to... wait for death?”

”Of course not. The imperial court won’t abandon this place,” Meng Yunzheng told him. ”What we need to do right now is for you to recover from your injuries first. When it’s time to deal with the mountain bandits, we might still need your help.”

Yuan Gui nodded with a heavy expression.

Only then did Meng Yunzheng pull Meng Qi aside to talk, speaking in a lowered voice, ”Be careful when you leave the small courtyard and try to avoid people. If you happen to run into soldiers, just say you encountered a mountain bandit, and after a robbery, you managed to scare him off together. Point in any direction, and remember not to expose the fact that you were at this large house.”
